How vain are you?

There was, also, Chanel #22, which my mother wore for years. It was a white floral that was light and fragrant and wonderful, but it was discontinued. For awhile I wore Diorissmo (also a white floral), then switched to Jessica McClintock. While Diorissmo still seems to be available, Jessica McClintock doesn't. For the last five years, Chanel #5 has been my signature scent, but if #22 was ever available again, I'd switch.

Diorissimo is another that has been drastically reformulated. I loved it too.

i found an old old bottle of guerlain's shalimar at an estate sale that i went to, that i put the teensiest drop of on again now and then, I love it! The bottle itself is amazing, almost like cut glass, instead of molded. There was also a bottle of evening in paris, that was just thick on the bottom that i didn't get, and wish now i had..
my mother's signature scent for years was white shoulders, I could't stand the smell of it, and also l'air du temps. eww. Was so happy when she switched to giorgio.
4711 sounds wonderful! melissa , thanks for the link. I am going to hide my wallet now.
-
nostalgia reigns..get ready for it...JEAN NATE. summer splashes...
also still like 4711

Hell, I wish you could still get cheap Love's Fresh Lemon. What a trip down memory lane. I do like the English Bigelow lemon cologne during the summer.
Did anyone else experience a change in how they process scent when they went through menopause? I can only liken it to what women describe as becoming nauseated by scents during pregnancy. I can no longer tolerate strongly scented stuff. I wore Aromatics Elixir, which is exceedingly powerful stuff for years and can't do it anymore. I can't even stand strong fabric softener. I had to give my mom a bottle of regular scented Tide liquid laundry detergent because I can only do the powder now.
-
Only during chemo. DH was using some weird smelling soap. I couldn't stand it, stunk up the whole house! I I insisted he throw it out. I don't notice scents on other people.
-
I'm feeling nostalgic and jealous with the perfume talk. Nostalgic because some of the names of these perfumes bring back memories. Jealous because perfume is useless for me. There's something in my body chemistry that won't hold onto the scent - I put on perfume and the scent dissipates within 10 minutes. The same thing happened to my mother and she said she would put it on her slip instead. The thing is, I never wear full slips, only half slips so that doesn't help, and the material of my bras didn't work.
Sigh.
But I love it on other people.
Leah

Leah - put it on a little piece of cotton ( cotton wool to the Brits on board ;-) and them put the little piece of cotton in your bra. Kinda like a little incense holder! I use all sort of oils: rosemary, lemon, lime, on little bits of cotton to use as room scents...

" ... I did totally score on a full length cream-colored, 100% cashmere coat for $16 recently, though!!!! ..."

more drool, what a find!!!!!!

Several months back my (tiny) sister & I were in Goodwill hunting down highball glasses for a party.
There was a perfect white leather above-the-knee trench coat with a set-in back belt that tied in front with a big fox fur shawl collar. I'm sure it was 1970s but right back in style and beautifully made & tailored. Sure wish it had been my size. It was $70 so Sis didn't try it on.

If anyone EVER ( EVAH!) finds an old yellow SLICKER RAIN COAT with those metal clasps in stead of button, and the corduroy collar, YOU MUST SEND IT TO ME. Size XL please. I know, I know, I've looked online, nada, zilch, they only have these thin chintzy ( and not the Nice English Floral Kind) of think plastic. yucky. I WANT A REAL SLICKER! Big Yellow Hat with the part wider in the back so it keeps the rain from going down your back too.
-
Sunflower, I won't find one here. Nobody wears raincoats. I remember being little & having them, but even in Winter you think you are going to die of heatstroke with one on ( Winter often being 50 or 60 degrees).
-
sunflowers,
I had one of those! The material was almost like an oilcloth, not plastic like at all.
Caryn
-
Caryn - exactly! I WANT ONE! NOW. Also, brown & white saddle shoes with pink rubber soles ;-) But mostly that slicker!
-
SunflowersMA - Saddle shoes in brown and white, pink soles...or any other combination you can think of:
-
Saddle shoes! YES!!!! Black-and-white for me.
-
Selena, those are gorgeous!
-
WOW - AZ - new discovery! And named Muffy's. Why am I not surprised ;-)))
Selena, I'd fall over in seconds in those heels.
ALAS, now I'm so used to Keen's Presidio's the "oxfords" don't look as comfortable as I remember them. Guess kids still don't have bunions
But love the brown & whites. Tempted.
-
Leah, I`ve been known to spray some perfume in my hair....it seems to hold well if I`m too sweaty anywhere else...
You can also spray a cami or nightie. I find when I put my nightie on at night I smell good if I had it on when I put on my scent before work, but I normally try to spray a bare chest (and BOY do I have a BARE chest!!!)
-
I've been trying on a bunch of shaper Camis (one to two sizes too small) the last couple of days because my compression bra is the pits. This has brought the question to mind of how many times in my adult life have I been "stuck" in an article of clothing? I think I can remember getting stuck in a turtleneck as a child an a few times while testing new fashions post bmx but I am quite sure that I have been stuck more in the last two days than in my entire life. Of course in vanity's sake, I refused to ask for help, so it could double as exercise. Is this happening everyday? Women across the world being enslaved by their garments? Or is it just me? Poll?
-
Delirium, not lately, but I still remember my panic over trying to get into the one piece snap-in the crotch body briefer I wore under my wedding dress. Oh my goodness, and I was getting dressed in a Sunday School room at a very old church & thought I was going to have a heat stroke.
-
Delirium, I had the same problem a few weeks ago when i went to try bathing suits and one top piece got stuck in y body, I didnt have enough strength in my arms to pull it out! I had to ask a lady in the fitting room to help me, she was very nice and told me not to worry that she was a nurse. I asked her for help but first I told her I just had reconstruction surgery and that my breasts looked scary but needed to take that bikini out! She helped and I stopped trying more of those! Learned my lesson, I wasn't still ready to lift my arms and to go crazy shopping!
-
DP, I wear shape wear tanks a lot these days, but I step in and roll it off. I know that awful rising panic feeling when you can't get it off.
Melissa I had to smile at you reminding me of trying to do up the snaps on one of those body suits in the barely lit stall, of a night club, a long time ago. I thought I'd pass out from the heat and the perspiration didn't help when I was trying to pull that thing into place!
-
Ariom, the worst toilet/nightclub combo was the Units jumpsuits with the very long sleeves that always fell in the potty, not to mention you had to strip nekkid to go pee:)
-
OMG Melissa, I remember those too. I have pictures of me in a grey snakeskin print jumpsuit with a matching long sleeveless vest that went over it. (very fetching!) It zipped up the front, but I used to get the sleeves of that draping into the toilet bowl too! Ewww.
My Daughter was here for the Easter break and she insisted on getting out the old photos. She loves all my old pictures in minis and boots, we laughed so much, we both had to run in opposite directions to get to the bathrooms before we peed ourselves laughing!
-
Delirium, as a kid I was terrified of turtlenecks, because I always had trouble getting them over my head (huge noggin).
After BMX it was hell for a while. 2 years out, I still have trouble with pulling a shirt off over my head sometimes. My mobility is fine and my strength is good, but there is still some short-circuit somewhere with the coordination or the angle or something.
-
ok the toilet stories made me giggle. :-)
-
I got stuck in change room just after bmx, too!!! Laughed so hard at myself that I had to sit down and in the process jogged the non-stretch fabric loser! I now never wear anything that doesn`t have give in it. And, I STILL put on and take off a coat or sweater kind of weird. I have to hold my left arm (node side) up straight once my arm is through and then work everything else around it. I thought it would get better with time, but I just mentioned it to my DH yesterday how frustrating and childish it is and looks to have to still do it that way.
-
LOL! I regularly get "stuck" in my biking gear. I've got those matching short-and-top sets; the top has a built-in shelf bra. Try to get out of one of those when you are hot, sweaty and tired; the sweat and the shelf-bra combine to create vacuum. I can get the top over my head, but that damned shelf bra won't move for love or money. My honey caught me once bent over from the waist, using my feet to anchor the top to the floor and trying to get the shelf bra "unstuck" by humping my back. He still laughs when he thinks about it.
