momto3boyzaz 33 treatments is std for lumpectomy on left side. I am left lumpy and have 28 full breast and 5 boosts. It takes time to put the treatment plan together, it is run through several staff members to tailor specifically for you.
-
notbuyingit you can get a rash guard in fl at any bealls store. Men's are cheaper than women's and they are the same shirt short or long sleeve. You can also order online free delivery. We call them UV shirts or fishing shirts. Good lucky
-
Had #6 of 33 today. So far, I'm just a little pink and my armpit feels tight, otherwise, I'm OK. RO's nurse looked at me today and said I looked good. Can't imagine on what planet a mastectomy looks good, but I'll take it. Pushing onward. Thanks for posting, rads ladies--I enjoy reading about everyone else's experiences.
-
flagirl, is it different than someone who is on the right side? I have 2 additional boosts than you do as well. I'm going to ask about all this tomorrow. They had me all set up with times, and then cancelled for today, but it all works out as tomorrow's time is better, looking at the positives!
-
thanks, flagirl, we always hit Beals!, will see how my skin is doing by then.
so interesting how different things are done everywhere! had my first boost today - no sharpie at all - just a couple of films that the doc looked at & then they said i was good to go. I did do my regular zaps also
yesterday was the lady before me's last day & i tried to get there earlier to clap her out but she was already gone
i'm sure the people working there get de-sensitized to the situation but it is a big accomplishment for each & every woman/man to finish & wish it was recognized in some way...maybe i will bring doughnuts ha! if i can get them past the nutritionist!
be well, Rads buddies, the sun will rise
-
momto3boys yes my Ro said low and slow when on the left side due to heart and lungs depending on location.mine is at eleven o'clock. Size, grade, lymph status are some if the parameters considered when tailoring treatment.
-
had my first of five boosts today. Can't sleep shortness of breath, and some pain took a Tylenol waiting for it to kick in. I have about ten marks and lines on me from set up. Told to be careful and try to preserve marks for boosts. Set up took 20 min. Five axis photon. Can't wait til this is over. Two more days then wkend break. Ten more left. .
-
flagirl-Thanks wasn't sure on the whole right vs. left. mine is at 3:00 right near the edge. Today when they called to confirm tomorrow was a go I confirmed 35? She said no 33, but it had not been signed off. She then said there was still a final sign-off between 8 and 10 boosts, but I was told 7. So, will find out the entire treatment plan tomorrow and once my trial run is over, then I will get my first treatment. Ready to get this moving, so I can enjoy my summer.
notbuyingit-like your screen name and so appropriate. Mine should have been "onlyme" I always win the lottery of that small percent it shouldn't happen, but it did to you.
Good luck, you are almost there! -
momto3boys---hope everything went well today. I am thinking about you. The first day is stress cause its a new first time experience. You will be fine. No worries.
-
momto3boys, mine was at 3 o'clock on rt also. I think my RO said 23 +10, but not positive. Mine was close to chest wall, so maybe that has something to do with it. Some of it also has to do with the amount of tissue (breast size) as to the regimen they prescribe. For some reason, with my rads, I didn't ask too many questions at the beginning. I think my mind was on over-load after surgery and chemo and really just wanted to get it done! I hope your treatments go well!
-
Flagirl- our DX is very similar, and I got mine three days after yours. We even had surgery on the same day. That was my second if three tho. They had to go in three time with Lumpectomy to get clean margins because they kept finding more cancer (multi foci). But finally got it all. And my breast doesn't seem much different for all they took out (at 11:00 point).
My last boost got put off another day because the machine is still down. I hope I get it tomorrow, otherwise I will be waiting six days total with the weekend.
Does anyone know when we can start using normal antiperspirant again??
-
AndreaJ50 Sorry to hear of your postponement. I know you just want to get it over with. Funny our dx and surgery dates were the same. Are you on a hormone? I'm on Armidex not too bad so far. I don't plan on going back to deodorant containing aluminum. I started using crystal deodorant and cornstarch powder (baby powder). Don't want to take a chance. Glad to hear you are almost done, hang in! I still have 3 boosts and 6 WBT left. Hangin in-
-
onlyme! ha! i agree! that's why when they say "usually it doesn't happen" i get ready!!
everyday i learn something new - now i have to go take a cool shower to rinse off this ointment lol
Andrea i assume you can go back to regular deoderant when you're done with radiation - altho that is one of the suspects of breast cancer, right? now why hasn't someone come up with a non-aluminum deoderant that actually works for us menopausal old ladies??
one more for me TG! "breast" is tighter than a drum
it's rough - but it did go faster than I thought
-
hello! I am supposed to begin taking Tamoxifen one month post Rads (I believe for the next 5 years) then I think I switch to Arimidex.
I miss my antiperspirant , lol! However I understand how you feel about aluminum. I will have to look into those crystals. I used Alra (a nonmetallic deodorant the techs recommended) while having Rads.
I had my first lumpy on Dec 17 and had a miserable time with general anesthetic. So luckily the subsequent two surgeries were done with IV sedation. They couldn't do that the first time since I was also getting node dissection.
This is quite the journey, isn't it?! But I am glad we don't have to make it alone!
Take care,
Andrea

Crystal deodorant is a brand name. It is a hard dome shaped crystal that you wet before applying to activate. It isn't sticky or unpleasant. I got mine at CVS in the deodorant section they have a couple of scents. Not an antiperspirant. Only one more day--- then weekend break. Looking forward to having some energy for the weekend.

Had a major panic attack today during my rads---don't know what happened but it seemed like forever before they finished. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. And I about started to cry when I left. Haven't had one of these since my 30's.... They took x-rays and I told them I wasn't supposed to get them till tomorrow--I thought every 5 days, and the three of them discussed it, I thought they decided not to do them. Finally I yelled HOw many times are you going to Zap me today and she said we are done, we did your x-rays first..... So They did them last Friday and again today (4 treatments between films)......I tghink I will take a Xanax tomorrow before I go.
-
What a day! Thank you for the well wishes, I needed them.
I guess everything hit me today, as like you redheaded1, I went into panic mode. My heart started racing and my blood pressure (which is traditional chronically low) was the highest it has ever been in my life. They were ready to send me on over to the ER. Thankfully I got it together and will take xanax tomorrow before I go.
They still don't have a final plan in place, the sticking point is 8 or 10 boosts. And I have one of the bolus things placed on me. I didn't really get what they are for, but just read about it and I guess it helps penetrate at the surface level? Mine is in the shape of a state (have more sharpie. I also have the area that will be radiated marked, it is much bigger than I would have thought (that is in red).
I think and they think, it was a combo of having my dry run, my first treatment and they've decided to do a PET Scan next week. I had an unusual finding which led to the (DCIS) incidentally. But, the unusual finding on the MRI can't be determined. Report had said atypical hemangioma (but they are extremely rare in the sacral area) or potentially metastasis. Hopefully it is my first and last one, but just the thought is overwhelming.
AndreaJ50-Sorry, what a pain.Keepthefaith-I don't have much tissue, as I mentioned I had so little after nursing three kids, I have silicone implants. Can't wait to see what happens. It looks like we may have the same protocol as I've been told 33-35 and 8-10 of those are boosts.
Flagirl-You are getting closer to the end.
Notbuyingit-Tomorrow is your last one? So happy for you! Today was someone's last day before me and they brought in treats cookies and cupcakes. I normally never eat that stuff, but grabbed a cupcake. It was so good, vanilla with a fresh strawberry frosting. -
TGIF!!!
Not-- woo hoo and congrats on"graduating" today!
Mom-- hugs to you- sending good thoughts
Red- some things happened to me but on a lesser scale. I am used to the pattern of zapping and machine movement, so when the other day and extra piece came towards me, I was a bit surprised. When the tech came in, she apologized and should have warned me. Said that my eyes rolled way back to see what was coming at me!
My question is when can I shave again?? If the weather ever gets warm here in nj, which I totally doubt, I would like to wear tank tops and not repulse the entire public.
-
A little bit of rads humor--
The other day, the was a young male tech in the room, getting training. Usually I have two women doing it all. He asked me if I was ok with him being in there. I said No problem. Then I asked him if he had a Sharpie. If he had a Sharpie he had TO GO!!!!!!
-
I have a male tech every day, then a young gal and another male swap off days. Yesterday was Bolus Thursday. I told them we could start a new trend on FB. TGIF #5 today, phew!
-
NBI, congrats on being done with rads today! Happy Dance!
So sorry to hear what some of you are going through. I know when they did films on me last week, I was freaking out, but luckily, no panic attacks. I always get a little nervous on "see the Dr day"!
faery, cute story! Don't know about shaving; thank goodness, I have no hair under my arms anyway!
momto, I hope your scan goes well and they find nothing. I have a hemangioma that they found while doing a breast MRI in 2009. I'm not sure what part of my liver it is in though. I think they are fairly common. Hang in there! Let us know~
TGIF! Enjoy your week-end ladies~
-
Wow boluses and boosts, I have no idea if I will be getting any of them. Anyone else getting IMRT? I'll be getting 10/28 today, nothing to report yet, but they gave me Radiaplex lotion and said if I get more itchy they have a cortisone lotion with aloe that they can give me. I get scans each Friday and Mondays see the doctor. This Monday my RO was sick so I saw some other RO dude. I have a friend who had IBC almost 2 years ago and she got radiation to the drain sites, but when they were marking me up during the planning I heard the RO say that I did not need the drain sites zapped. So I wonder if radiating the drain sites adds a couple extra days for some of you?
-
NBI - happy graduation day! Do something wonderful this weekend to celebrate, knowing we are all there with you in spirit.
Andrea- I was told to get either "Toms" or " Arm & Hammer" deodorant because neither has aluminum in them. I was surprised when I found "Toms" in my local grocery store (on the bottom shelf) and it was the same price as the name brands. I had read a long time ago that you shouldn't use an anti-persperant, because sweat is necessary to cool your body off. I started looking then for a plain deodorant, not anti-persperant/ deodorant and could not find any locally. I wasn't worried enough to do an intense search. Then I heard that anti- persperant so may be related to cancer, because they stop the lymph nodes from doing their jobs. I was so glad when the RO's office told me about "Toms". I will never go back to the regular.
Today is a landmark of sorts for me, too, I will be 1/3 done with rads this afternoon!
Happy Fri everyone. Enjoy the 2 day break.
-
Relax is the word!
keepthefaith, hemangioma are common in the liver and thoracic spine area. Rare in the area that this finding is, even the Dr's have told me this. But, nothing states it is cancer (potential), it has to be proven it isn't. Anyone having a PETscan would be a bit on edge, at least I think. Nothing shows anything has spread, I fall into that 1% lottery so it could be some rare weird thing.
inks- No bolus for you, as you would know already and you would probably know about boosts as well (hopefully you escaped both-you've been through enough). I didn't even know about them until yesterday and even then didn't understand what it is for. I keep reading it may cause my skin to react more though.
Anne-Hi and congrats on being 1/3 of the way done!!!!
TGIF everyone! My zap is at 1:00pm, calm..... -
Hi all...has anyone had breast tissue changes happen during rads? A change that would require another CT scan sim during to, I guess. I started boosts early to give my armpit a rest (very irritated). I only had one when the doc decided that the original boost site isn't lining up precisely? It was explained it could be an incision healing issue, but it makes me think "what now?" And I wonder if I need to be concerned....
I think I am at 22/33 right now.

Have to say you ladies are very up on all aspects of treatment. I didn't even know many total treatments I had until I asked this Wednesday and I was 11 treatments in! So unlike me but I think I was just on overload when I started. I guess everyplace is different by I am told no lotion, deodorant etc 4 hours prior to appointment so I do use deodorant on other side after treatment and when I go to work. I just make sure to shower and use nothing in am before. I haven't had too much kickback on shaving from practitioners and honestly shaved on accident yesterday-just habit and wear sleeveless all the time. Went to treatment yesterday and sat for waiting 30 minutes- unheard of there. Met a younger girl who has time behind me and I have to say she was great motivator. You ladies coming into this after multiple surgeries and chemo are amazing! Turned out they had trouble with air conditioner in treatment room and had wrong phone number on record for me so I had no treatment, have to add onto end, but I think I was meant to meet this girl as I was feeling a little tired. If she can do all she has-she has a week to go- I can definitely do it! Sorry some of you have had anxiety-nothing worse. I found it did get better and I have handsome guy who does my treatments so that helps. Have a single friend who would love to meet him but told her I have few more weeks and can't ask too many questions or he may think this married lady is putting the moves on him! It is a distraction and kind of funny. Hope you all enjoy weekend off!
-
Machine is still being worked on. If they get it working by tonight they will open up Saturday. Luckily I am on my last boost...I figure if 32 rads didn't do the trick then one more 4 min session won't make a difference. But darn it I want to ring that bell!!' Lol.
Faerywings-too funny!!
The first time I went into the room and disrobed I told them there really should be music playing if I'm going to strip in public. Lol.
Now I am a but worried I am getting so used to taking my top off I might do it every time I enter a room...dentist, restaurant..oh dear!!!
Anne- I will look for Toms (never heard of it) or Arm&Hammer. Thanks.
Congrats to all who are finishing up.
I remember celebrating 1/3, 1/2, then 2/3 and now would just like to finish. Lol. It really will go by quickly for those of you starting.
I had a very sore under arm the last week, but it is almost healed now.
Gentle hugs to all!!
-
Had #20 of 33 today. Saw my RO yesterday and when he looked at my chest his first comment was "medium rare". That pretty much describes it. No blisters though. Yet.
-
AndreaJ50
I do hope you are able to get your last one in tomorrow. So true about learning to be more open disrobing. I had a moment early on where I saw several doctors in one day and everyone brought a friend in with them. I told my sister I was half expecting to get Mardi Gras beads I had flashed so many people in one day! Best of luck.
-
I just got the call....the machine is fixed!!! I can go in today for my last treatment! Yay!
