Thanks flagirl!
yes I do see that light at the end of the tunnel! The herceptin infusion every three weeks til Dec won't be a biggie at all, I'm used to that. And everything else is behind me! Just need to get through rads!
-
Donna - I am having boosts. I've completed 2 and have 5 more to go. It's a quick treatment just doing the one spot. So far that area doesn't look worse than the rest but not sure how it will be by the end of this week. I had tattoos to line up the rest of my treatment but for the boost they have also outlined the boost area in sharpie marker and put some tape over certain areas of the line - I think just to keep it from wearing off and then they remark the other lines each day to complete the circle. There is an attachment they add to the machine so it is closer to your body when they are doing treatment - about 6 inches or so from your body.

Wow, I just finished #3/25 radiation tx, I also went back to work last week, I am soooo tired. Last week was a short week, I am off on Wednesdays and Friday was a holiday. I don't know how I will manage, I worked throughout chemo and did fine. I guess with surgery and now rads it is catching up with me. Is anyone else exhausted after rad tx? And this is only tx#3,WTH!!
So glad some of you are almost done with your tx!
-
Hi Ladies,
I'm new and do my trial run on Wednesday and start my rads on Thur, 33 but am confused by that as I was told 7 of those are boosts, so 26 is an odd number? Will ask on Wednesday.
I have a question mine are whole breast and chest wall, then the 7 boosts just to the are of the cancer. Do all people get the chest wall or was it just my position which was 3:00?
I have sharpie and the special tape all over, 9 markings. I was just not with it when all this was done, as I need to ask what my field of radiation is because those stickers encompass a large area. I see so many who think because they are fair skinned they will burn, etc. I actually have olive skin, but my nurse, radiologist, plastic surgeon all say everyone is different, you did not know how you will react until you begin. A fair skinned person could come through with flying colors and I could burn.
Also, they said do not listen to anyone and their suggestions on creams, they would provide everything I need as I need it. I will be seen by the nurse and Dr. once a week to check on how my skin is doing.
Finally, I have silicone implants, prior to finding out I had BC. Is there anyone else? My PS surgeon said it would be an exception for me not to have issues (it is just not a good combo). He will see me in June when I'm done to check for damage and then revisit at 6 months and probably wait to fix anything until a year. They've said it would all be covered.
I've pretty much read through most of the posts, so hugs to everyone, cheers to those almost done and anyone starting with me this week? -
Hi Momto3boysaz, I have silicon implants and have completed 20 of 28 rads so far. Had a small subcutaneous infection in the breast that is not being radiated that was taken care of with an antibiotic. So far I do not see any implant related issues.
-
momto3boyz - your #'s are the same as mine. 26 whole breast and 7 boosts. I also had 25 to my lymph node area. I think the placement of where the treatments are does depend on where the cancer was, etc. As far as creams - you got it, just follow what your RO recommends - there seem to be many options but it's best to go with what your clinic does.
-
lots of posts! I love It!! peeled more over the weekend underneath my new "breast" they put me on the antibiotic today (not sure it's that bad but i'm all about clearing this up pronto!) I was chosen for the regular silver infused one - not the new honey - kind of glad cuz it sounded super messy!!
Vintage i was worried about getting wiped out also & that was not the case for me - of course i didn't do much but go to work and then couch sit til bedtime
Faery so is it like a wet suit top? or lighter? can u get short-sleeve?..i will internet shop...
Anne i'm afraid the tightness stayed with me the whole time - mostly bad towards evening -felt better in the morning. I would take 1/2 hydrocodone after work & it would ease up.
never had to hold my breath
don't know what that's about...will see the Doc tomorrow...have a Herceptin treatment Wed but after this week will go for almost a month without ANY appointments of any kind!! cannot wait!! 14 days til FL CANNOT believe i'm almost done
Hang in there, ladies!! the sun will rise
-
Hi Vintage, how did your session go?
I had my boost prep done yesterday, more Sharpie all over. I am done with 11/23 and I think she said I am going to have 9 boosts. That sounds like a lot, doesn't it? But I guess it is better to do that, since my cancer was so localized?
I am hating the fatigue. I tried to do a little bit of yard work yesterday and cleaned out one small garden area and was totally pooped out. How long does it take to get your stamina back?
-
Mom- good luck to you too!
Gram- I am so much more tired than I thought I would be too. I hope that it goes away soon.
Not- yeah, like a wet suit top but I picked out one that is not tos tight. There are long and short sleeved ones. Check out amazon, kohls and pacsun

Hi Faerywings
the first treatment was quick & easy. Hubby has today off so we're going on the motorcycle, get a ride in with a brief stop at the cancer center.
I can't imagine that the rad fatigue could be anything like the all over wiped out feeling from chemo. That was awful, that was like nothing I can explain. Plus I got anemic. So I am hoping I can handle this ok.
-
Momto3boyz-
I am little bit ahead of you-started 4/9 so a little behind faerywings above. Your doctors are so right-everyone is different. I went into radiation thinking it would be a piece of cake besides scheduling work and arranging for my 3 year old during treatment time. One of my sisters had radiation for IDC and really had no problems at all. My surgeries for DCIS were more involved than hers and my location-under the nipple-obviously is a sensitive area. I have had a difficult time already but as my surgeon said you have to consider what you went through before hand and we are all different. Once I got more realistic in my expectations I have set my mind that I can do five more weeks-some women have chemo for years, I can do this. So it will still be a piece of cake comparatively just not the flavor I expected! In terms of creams, the PA at radiation has given me a couple creams, suggested cortisone for itchy areas already starting, and I am able to use aloe a friend got me. I live in SW Florida so it is already mid 80's here. I cheat on the shaving once a week with new razor each time but I am told I won't need to or want to pretty soon. For those looking for coverage try looking at Columbia SPF shirts-very light weight. We use on boat and I just steal my husbands. Good luck to you all.
-
I finally wrote under diagnosis and treatment but I don't see it here. Not sure what I didn't hit but if someone can tell me how I will fix. Will check back later.
-
I'm hoping for a good path report tomorrow at the BS's office which will mean radiation in stead of chemo. I wanted to address the implant issue. I have saline implants and my PS removed the one in my left breast and put a temp expander type in there because he said rads could cause it to harden. I will have it removed and get new implants about 3-4 months after I finish rads. I'm interested in why you were able to keep yours in. I wonder if it has to do with saline vs. silicone
-
I am amazed by those of you that had to hold your breath during treatments. Wow!
I tried to take my deeper breaths when the machine was going behind me and not radiating (circles around me but only radiates on top half).
My side is getting worse. Doc gave me Silverderm sample but so far I don't feel any relief. It is getting redder and last night was my worse one yet. Seems odd since I haven't had that area zapped for six days. But it is beneath my node scar so must have something to do with that.
Oh well, only two boosts left and I am one day closer to healing!!
Gentle hugs all around!!
-
Andrea - some of the literature says that the radiation effects continue for 7 to 10 days after your last treatment and then start to heal. The area under my arm around the lymph node scar area continues to get redder as well. I'm hoping it starts to reverse soon.
HaveToLaugh - as far as your profile, it might just be that you didn't click on the "public" button and it's still on "private". I think you have to choose public or it's automatically set to private with each different section of the information and with your overall profile.
-
You are almost through. Awesome. The "healing" continues for one week to ten days after rads are complete and I definitely had the worst SE during this time. But then one week to the day, it started to heal and I felt remarkably better, so do not dispair if the burning continues. It is now three, almost four weeks post rads and my skin and scar look great. I feel great. Still a bit tanned, but the skin is so smooth. I joke and say I had a "chemical" peel, just like the movie stars!

Hi VintageGal,
I live in Portsmouth - most of my care was at Lahey in Peabody but it's such a hassle to drive there every day so I asked to have my treatments done in Dover so I would not miss so much work. I go to Wentworth Douglas and love the team there! The techs are wonderful and my radiation oncologist is awesome.
20-25 seconds might not sound like a long time but it can be! I have to hold for 30 seconds for the first treatment and then 15 for the second treatment. It will be SO MUCH easier if you practice every morning. Also, heads up - when I first went for the sim, I had to take a full deep breath (which is easier to hold) but for my treatments, it ended up being like a 3/4 deep breath so I had to adjust! At first it feels like you don't have enough air in your lungs.
I know right? About the goggles? Would be more comforting to watch the line yourself to know if you were in the zone!!!!
Are you going to Dover for your treatments?

Pam- that's just where I hurt. But that is the only area, so I am grateful. I hope we both have relief soon.
I am going on vacation two weeks after my end date and I hope I am up to swimming then.
Does anyone know if it is safe to wear sunscreen and/or a tshirt to protect from sun after Rads when swimming outdoors? Because I can't find a rash guard in my size.
-
Good Morning Ladies!
Had my first rad yesterday. Left me with a couple questions. Has anyone else been told not to use Ibuprofen while on Tomaxifen? Reason for asking as the tech girls in the radiation room suggested a Advil before I come in each day and was told by friend not to take Advil or Motrin while on Tamoxifen. Not a fan of Tylenol so trying to figure out what I can take that won't interfere with the Tamoxifen.
The girls so recommended to use Coconut oil on the radiated area. Where would I find Coconut oil? Looked at Wallyworld yesterday however I could not find it by the lotions.
TY
Pam

Hi Faerywings,
We had a similar diagnosis and procedures. I'm sorry you already feel fatigue - that really stinks. Did your doctor tell you that you will need to take those 5 year cancer prevention pills? I think they are going to put me on Tamoxifen but I have not met with that doctor yet - they said when I am almost done radiation that appointment will be set up. That is one thing I am dreading....I am not into taking ANYTHING, barely take Alleve when I ache. In my late 30's a similar thing happened with my ovaries/uterus and after several procedures finally had to do the fully hysterectomy and they put me on hormone replacement because of my age and surgical menopause but I stopped taking them after three years. I was fortunate - I guess our DCIS feeds off of estrogen so if I had continued into my 60's as suggested, I might be in worse trouble!
Hope you feel better and your fatigue subsides. I am very fortunate so far in that area and I'm not sure why because I am overweight, do not exercise and don't get a lot of sleep! MAMA MIA!

I think I love this board
. Thank you for all the insight!
Homemom~ I had a lumpectomy and they did an MRI on implants before surgery to ensure no leaking, etc. They never mentioned removing it, but last week after my 1 month surgical follow-up PS came in afterwards (I got to MDA, so multidisciplinary all in one building) as I wanted him to see me before rads and truly discuss what I could expect. But, he did expect me to have some issues and explained what could happen? I don't know maybe the area being radiated. It is my left side, 3:00 close to my chest wall. They weren't sure if they could get clean margins, but they did 1mm. I don't have much tissue either.
Havetolaugh~Hope it gets easier, but all my Dr's cautioned me that it might be very easy, but it might not they cannot predict how each of us will react, skin, fatigue etc.
I'm one of those lefties that has to hold her breath too. Or do righties have to hold their breath too?
On the tamoxifen issue, I've met with oncologist, but will meet with her again after rads are over to begin tamoxifen and it will be 5 years. Any cancer only feeds off estrogen if you are ER+ and that is the type you want, so many anti-hormonals they can throw at it. -
Hi girls...I AM DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I can focus on healing my skin and getting some energy back. Luckily I felt pretty good throughout but the fatigue has just really set in the last couple of days. So glad to be done with this chapter. Hugs -
Hi Donna
I was born and brought up in Portsmouth. I've had all my cancer care at WDH cancer center! Great bunch of people there! Had my second rad today then a quick vist from rad onco dr. I will be there next Tuesday for a longer time, I have my Herceptin infusion in the morning then rads.
And you have dogs?

The organic coconut oil in most grocery and big retail stores like Walmart is in the baking aisle. It is in a jar or tub, the oil will most likely be semi solid, whitish. It will melt in warmer temps to an oil. You can get it at health food stores and amazon but it is the same.
-
Anneb, what is the prescription crème----Is it Xclair? Let me know if it is I found a way to get it (my insurance won't cover) and youget 1 tube free for every tube you order---a great great deal.
-
Those of you planning sunshine things when you are done---are you concerned about sunburn? I' ve been lectured about this since diagnosed/starting my rads 9/28 and on Easter, I was in the sun for a very brief time about 3pm and I am really red (didn't expose the treatment area, but my face and back and neck) Does radiation increase your sunburn potential?
-
congrats Girlstrong! Happy Dance for you!
#15 today. So far, so good! My sleeping pattern is messed up for some reason the past few nights though. Maybe the chemo fatigue is gone and I am back to my old insomnia ways.
I hope the rest of you are doing well!
-
I had my first boost today. Only 4 more to go. Then i start tamoxifen. My skin has held out pretty well, but I am really fatigued. My body actually aches from fatigue. I am on my feet all day and ache all, over. Are any of you achy?
-
Congrats Girlstrong ! It is always encouraging to hear about those who are finished.
-
Saw the RO today dermatitis worse steroid cream not working. He is going to switch my schedule around. I have 6 full breast tx and 5 boosts remaining. He is going to do the boosts first (3-5) and then go back to full tx at the end. Hope this helps. I have been doing the Epson salt baths twice daily as Redreading suggested and it is helping with itching. Thanks Red
