hey, ladies! Happy Friday! one more week to go - actually 4 days but i missed one & assume i will have to make it up (I'M not bringing it up tho ha!) still not sure when they are scheduling my boosts, i only see one day next week where there is something xtra written in.The techs just tell me not to worry, it'll get done
still holding on with limited peeling - no weeping TG! i signed up for the honey study if i get that so the nurse checks me every day, glad i have 2 days to recoup again.
Andrea do check into the support groups, i know i haven't had the energy or interest to make it to a meeting - but hope to in the future. I'd really like to start a local discussion group - like this only in person. I'd rather do that then get a lesson in make up. My center is always pushing more lotions on me! too bad i'm not closer, i could slip you some lol - but this thread has given a lot of over the counter lotion ideas
Pam we are almost done!! yea!!!
-
My husband came with me today to rads since he had the day off from work. He was interested in the process I go through so I asked if he could see the room and the therapists let him follow them around. So he was in the room for the set up and then out with the them watching the screens while I got my treatment.
-
OMG, this faery is HAPPY today that I don't have to go anywhere. No rushing around to get to appts or anything!
Yay!!
I am 2 weeks down and only slightly pink. I hope that it stays that way. The "fullness" and tenderness seems to be going away as well. That seems kind of odd, but I will take it!
-
Pam- that is cool that your hubby wants to see everything. Never occurred to my husband.
faerywings- I found I was tender and felt fuller initially too, that has gone now, but now I have tenderness under my arm.
Best of luck to you!
-
has anyone had a lot of pain by their node scar? I have three boosts left next week and the itching and tingling of the breast that feels like a sunburn is tolerable,
But now under my arm and on the side of my breast I have a lot more pain and it feels like something is torn inside (probably just a nerve thing). It woke me up during the night a few times.
I took an Advil and put lots of Aquaphor on...any other advice???
-
Notbuyingit - I am not sure if we get boost since we've had a mastectomy.
I have 5 down and 23 to go. Friday they did scans and that took a little longer.
-
Finished week 3 on Friday. I'm very red, a little sore, a little itchy. They gave me some Miaderm samples and I'm also using 100% aloe and Aquaphor. Only 3 1/2 more weeks to go!
-
Hi Pam,
I have just started my radiation therapy and had my third treatment yesterday. I've heard it's unusual, but I am already a little pink, swollen and sore. I do feel proactive about this part of my therapy, but it is already starting to feel draining. I have decided to continue working(until 3:00) and I have a family. Everyone is helping out at home but I think I'm still wrapping my head around the diagnosis in general. Thanks for starting the thread.
-
one week left for me! can't believe i have made it this far...inks they do a boost along the scar line - they say C-cells like to hang out in dead skin? & i will get one on my upper lymph area because that's where they found the cancerous ones.
Andrea no problem with my node scar, actually my peeling underarm skin took off the top layer of the scar so now it is barely noticeable ha! i guess that's a plus. My most painful area has always been where the drains went in - i had 3 after the M- one stayed in for over 5 wks
cool, Pam, that your husband went with - personally, after all the attention I got over the chemo, i felt kind of deserted through this - glad you ladies helped me through!
still hoping my skin hangs in there so i can go swimming on vaca...lotioning & airing out like crazy - but whatever the results i will be super happy to have it over & done with!!
good luck!, newbies
-
Pam, that is so cool about your hubby. I want so desperately to see how things work, so one day I am going to have to ask the techs to show me. It is so hard to not turn my head to watch as everything moves around.
Andrea- I am so glad it is not just me that got less sore/swollen as the tx's went on. I know I have 2 1/2 more weeks, but I'll take every little bit of good news I can get.
Am I the only one doing a "compressed schedule," same total dose of rads but in 4 1/2 weeks rather than 6 1/2?
Not-- I just bought a rash guard from kohls. I live at my little local lake and love going down the shore in the summer. My RO said no sun exposure for 6 months, so between that and my PICC line I had to do something or I will go crazy this summer. Its a little dorky looking but who craes, right?
-
Andrea I too started having itching under lymph underarm scar. I have eight full and five boosts left. Still have some rashing at nine to eleven o' clock area, but no open sores. Got pretty pink yesterday but better somewhat today. No peeling had that last wkend. Good news fatigue getting better. I noticed a big difference this weekend.
-
FW what's a rash guard? i had read somewhere that a coating of vaseline will keep the chlorine from getting in your skin...
flagirl do you know if your boosts are separate? this is my sixth week & they better get everything in cuz i am not coming back!
i have not really been itchy & not really that tired, so i have been lucky there. I try to go to bed early because i figure the more i rest the less i am irritating the area.
Happy Easter to you all!! here's to New Life - Cancer free!! We WILL do this
-
I am sore where my tank top was rubbing (also would have been where my bra would rub...if I wore one).
I will get a rash guard since I have a trip planned in two weeks and there should be lots of swimming!!
-
Hi Pam- I have had 6 treatments so far, and don't see any redness, but do feel sore and very, very tight. I saw a Dr on Thurs, an older man, (not my RO) and he said plain aloe works as well as anything they can give you, but it had to be pure aloe, specifically no alcohol in it. I have been to my grocery store, Walmart and Target and cannot find any. I am hoping my body adjusts to the treatments and I get used to the tightness, which I have had since surgery. My BS says it will go away in time, but will take awhile. The rads are making it worse right now.
What is a rash guard?
-
guess we will have to wait til after Easter to find out about the rash guard! lol
Anne, did u have reconstruction? the tightness is what bothers me more than the skin thing - mostly along the inside scar line & underneath - so far everything looks the same...
i did go to a health store for the aloe - i think it is 99% with some added vitamins...
let's hope we will all be swimming this summer!
-
Notbuyingit - rashguard is a swim shirt, often kids wear them because then you do not have to keep applying the sunscreen.
I had trouble finding pure aloe as well. I found a 98% aloe by Jason in the natural/organic department at the grocery store. It seems sticky to me.

Hello Ladies
I start rads tomorrow.
I already had a one hour simulation, xrays, markings, tattoos & actually they had me go through it a second time doing breath holding. Anyone have that? From what I understand because the rads will be aimed so close to heart I need to hold my breath for the zap to keep my ventricle down? I had to wear goggles to see a screen that showed the breathing levels while I had this *cube* on my belly.
I also went back again Friday for more xrays & a *dry run*. Are they being super thorough?
Anyway after a lumpectomy, node removal, 5 months of chemo & then a BMX last month I am hoping rads won't be too bad. But I am bummed about the upcoming fatigue after just starting to get my strength up. I have my stash of creams. :>) And I'll be checking in, probably venting & asking questions.
-
Hi NBI- no I did not have reconstruction, and at this point, I don't think I will. My BS told me at our first meeting that he would not even discuss it till after chemo, surgery and rads. I think he left extra skin for reconstruction in case I want it. I really don't want more surgeries, and /or be tied to one location for months again. You described the tightness perfectly. I fell like I am wearing a bra that is way too small, and it has settled right on the scar line. I know most people don't have any reaction to the Rads until they are several weeks in, but I am feeling a lot of discomfort in my right chest area. I hope my body adjusts to the treatments as I get more comfortable with the process.
-
well I am worried about the week to come. I thought I would be better by today but I have blisters that have opened up and I have been faithful About applying aquafore. I stopped steroid use because it's getting redder so I am thinking I may be allergic. I see the doc Tues. I am hoping I will see a change before morning.
-
Anneb1149 so sorry you having tightness and feeling uncomfortable. I only had a lumpectomy so I can't relate exactly, but I did and still do have tightness and a heaviness or fullness. Dr said typical from surgery and Rads. I hope you get relief soon. Good luck next week. I only take one week at a time. Hugs
-
notbuyingit my boosts (5) are at the end after 28 full tx. My breast no longer recovers on the weekend. I am red on the whole breast from the center to armpit and up to the collarbone and to about a half inch below. I haven't asked how long they will be (# of seconds or strength). Not ready to think that far ahead. Good luck next week. I have 8 more full tx then 5 boosts left.
-
I just have three boosts left. I have a lot of pain on my under arm still. Up until now I have had full range of motion, but since Friday night whenever I try and lift my arm it feels like flesh is tearing. It is bright red but no open wounds yet. I hope it improves or that I can see my RO tomorrow when I go for boost.
So sorry for everyone having discomfort during this procedure. My fullness in my breast eased towards end of Rads, if that helps .
Take care,
Andrea

Annieb- the aloe is Fruit of the Earth- no alcohol, I found it at Target by their travel size stuff and also at Kmart. It's 100% aloe very gel I think. Also I'm using Aquaphor healing ointment in small amounts, it's kind of greasy.
-
Not- yes, not many regular store carry rash guards for women, mostly kids and then surf shops. And some are more "decorative" so you have to look for one that says it blocks UVA/UVB rays. There are some really cute ones with long sleeves but like I said, long sleeves = PITA with my PICC. PacSun had some cute ones too.
Aloe-- if you can't get a bottle of it, you can get the plant and open the leaves. Or you can usually find aloe leaves in the produce dept of your supermarket. HTH!
-
I got an Aloe Vera plant from the Walmart garden section and it does seem to help.

Hello! Well, just finished 16/30 this morning! Last week the oncologist told me my last 8 would be boost treatments where they will just treat the cavity where the cancer was versus my entire breast, underarm and collarbone area AND I won't have to hold my breath during treatments during Boost!
Boost preparation was interesting - Oncologist came in and drew all over me, then CT, then the tech lays a plastic thing over your breast and draws the outline of where the Onc drew. It will be more localized but I will say, I am a little nervous that all of the radiation will be so focused. I'm doing pretty well - I am red, itchy and under my arm and down my side to the bottom of my breast is dark but it is manageable with the lotion and hydrocortizone lotion.
Anyone else doing or having this boost treatment done?
Visit with my brother from Nashville was great - got to watch season premier of Game of Thrones with him and had family reunion with cousins, etc that was a lot of fun.
Hope you are all doing well - have missed you!

Sorry to hear of your arm pain. It could be the scar tissue breaking up. I think that 's why they target that area. I asked about that in the beginning about the boosts and would they be doing that area during boosts and they told me no. Try doing your after surgery exercises to see if it loosens up. Take a Tylenol first to make it easier. Almost done. yay!!!

Hi Vintagegal,
YES, YES - I have been holding my breath since treatment #1!!!!! By the end of treatment, we will be Olympian swimmers!
Here is what I learned and this will help you A LOT: I have to hold once for 30 seconds and the second treatment for 16 seconds. VERY IMPORTANT - practice holding your breath EVERY MORNING - I did not do that the first week and it was so hard to do and so uncomfortable with my lungs burning, etc. It seems like it should be easy, right? The 16 second one is easy, the long one takes practice! How long do you have to hold your breath for? ALSO, don't take a break over the weekend, practice holding your breath then too. I found that by Thursdays, I could hold my breath up to 45 seconds so the treatment became a breeze. And believe it or not, every morning you START OVER. Seems like for the first few times I make to 16 or 17; I do it on and off for about an hour and by the end of the hour, I am all set.
Also, the machines stops if your breath falls below the safety line; AND you do not wear the goggles during treatment. The tech says "OK, when you are ready take a deep breath" - they tell you when to stop and hold it.
Any questions let me know, I am happy to help others for a change!

VintageGal1 Welcome, know that we are here for you. Feel free to speak your mind, and share. Good luck with your treatments, they go by pretty quickly. Your set up procedure sounds pretty normal, although treatment times and number of passes vary from person to person since they tailor it to each individual. Also, each facility differs slightly depending on set up, age of machine, etc.
Some glide right through without a problem and a few of us with fairer skin have minor issues. It will be over before you know it. The light is at the end of the tunnel, do you see it? This is the last step before we can begin to get our lives back to some normalcy. You are almost there...Hugs
-
Thanks Donna! I didn't think anyone had read my post.
Tech said 20-25 seconds & I have been practicing. Having gone twice already (without rads) has given me some idea. Yeah they told me about the machine stopping & no goggles...I told them I was bummed I couldn't wear the goggles again LOL
Where did you have your treatments, I see you're in NH too??
Thanks again!
