hi I have some questions about the drug, My bs has refered me to onco because I'm high risk and wants me to start as a preventative. If anyone is taking as a preventative what are the side effects?  I've heard weight gain , hot flashes.

I stared Tamoxifen just over a month ago as a preventative. I was diagnosed with LCIS in February. The side effects have been pretty tolerable for me. I mostly have problems with cold and warm flashes. The first 48 hours were nothing, I hoped that might be a good sign. But then I started getting cold flashes and occasionally a warm flash. They were pretty jarring the first week, but have calmed down to more gentle onset. I don't notice them so much when I am busy. But as soon as I sit down or relax I notice them.

I've been really watchful of my weight because I was afraid of gaining. But so far I am steady and haven't gained.

One more thing. Right at 48 hours my gums started to bleed when I brushed my teeth. But that only happened once. I read that usually goes away quickly as your body adjusts.

I was a bit hesitant to start. I had the prescription for a week before I took the first pill. But my worst fears were not realized. It has been okay. Good luck to you! I hope you tolerate it well.

thanks for starting this thread, my path report suggests I'm high risk, and when I have my surgical consult in a couple weeks to talk about excision biopsy (results were from core needle) I plan to ask about Tamoxifen.

I have been on Tamoxifen about 2 years. Started out on Arimidex but ONC switched me when I developed osteoporosis. Arimidex attacks the bones; Tamoxifen has the opposite effect. I have had weight gain, hot and cold flashes, difficulty concentrating and sleeplessness. Not horrible side effects but def unnerving esp the weight gain so I have stepped up the exercise. There are women who have had debilitating SE from the drug. Of course the benefits in preventing a recurrence are tantamount but some women quit taking the drug when they simply could not function with the drug. There are other drugs you can take so if it gets unbearable tell your dr. Good luck. Diane
