Teacher- I am just a few days ahead of you and finally started being able to sleep on my side. I don't make it through the whole night....the abdominal incision starts aching. I am wearing supportive/compressive bra constantly!
I am still using a binder (my choice)....the abdominal scar feels so much better when supported!
-
Hello everyone,
An hour ago I received a phone call from hospital, they had received my Doctor's orders for pre-op and were calling to schedule me. My appt is May 9th. 8 AM. My DIEP will be done 5/21 at Baptist Hosp.(main) in Miami.
I have been flooded with so many emotions, my mind is racing and have just been basically sitting by phone for past hour. I do have some fears and concerns (the usual surgery ones, my kids...what if...) but 90% is elation. I am going to have my breasts again.
I am planning as I type.....Dividing house and chores over the next few weeks so everything will be done and the weekend before, I'll get my hair (all one inch of it) done....I am about 95% white growth from original dark brown hair. I am thinking of maybe dying it platinum silver. My daughter wants purple. I really don't like the white hair, but hair is so new I really didn't want to process so soon so maybe a color that washes out in a few washings???? And Mani/Pedi in paloma picasso red. And reread everything here. And pack. And......
So thankful for all of you,
Vivian

Ashira, sigh of relief that stage 1 is a thing of the past. When you feel up to it, let us know how you are.
-
I just now stopped wearing spanx, and I am 7 months out from Stage 1 and 9 weeks out from Stage 2. No kidding, I wore them around the clock. Because I had DIEP and GAP, my scar goes almost l the way around, and my hip scars feel every bit as tight my belly scar. It just always felt better with everything held in tight together. Why, if it wasn't for the weather finally warming up, I might still be in spanx. Although, I have to admit that it feel like I have taken a huge step and it feels very liberating. Not just from a spanx point of view, but it feels as if I am "done". Now I know why burning bras in the 60's was such a hit!
-
Vivian,
My hair initially came in white too. I refuse to put chemicals back in my system when it's trying so hard to recover from chemo so I use a henna / indigo color that gives me my dark brown back. Works well and is all natural. Might want to give that a try. I'm gonna do the same with my nails pre-surgery. Gonna make hubs get a pedi with me!! Lol
-
"Swelly belly!" Love it! Glad to know I'm not experiencing anything unusual. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
-
Yay Vivian!! I can feel your excitement! I am so very happy for you that your date has finally arrived. I think Paloma Picasso red would look fab with white hair. Maybe you should consider it!
-
Zenful, I was just wondering how you were doing. I'm glad to hear you are doing so well! Done, indeed!
-
ahem....WHITE HAIR RULES!!!!
Vivian....when I lived/worked in Miami, Baptist Hospital had a great reputation, and I'm sure it still does. Congrats on getting your date...now it likely feels like you're racing out of control downhill, with the emergency brake on! We've been there, sister.
zenful....burning spanx sounds like a wonderful new trend....go for it!
-
Let's have a spanx-burning in September.........
-
I'll save my Spanx for the burning fest!

naiviv - . FANTASTIC NEWS !!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to post the same thing

Thanks everyone for telling it like it is and making me feel normal when I feel crazy.
Teacher- enjoy your grandgirls, let us know if they notice the new you- soft and warm hugs. I am far from retirement but I do work at home. I do plan on taking off 2 weeks and can take up to 8 paid if needed. I am hoping I will be fine to sit at my desk and type and talk on the phone. I love that it will finally be warm, what I really want to do is just sit in a chair outside and heal and appreciate all around me.
JMB- Again I am so sorry for your loss, so sad and her young daughter. Yesterday they said that the father of one of the teens killed in the Chardon school shooting died of a heroin OD. He had to have been in his upper 40s-50. This is becoming an epidemic in Ohio and I am sure other plans. Having teens it really scares me. It is so much harder for them to grow up than it was for us.
I have seen the Starbucks but I have never had a cup of coffee! Crazy I know, I do have a problem with Diet Pepsi I don't like to admit. I have spent a lot of time at their recently my mom was there on and off for 2 weeks. I got a lot of exercise! This is all getting very REAL! I cant believe its been 12 weeks for you, time sure does fly on by.
Naiviv- So exciting!! I have the same fears and concerns but "we got this"!
Happy Easter to you all.. XO

I finally got my last drain yesterday. Exactly 4 wks from my surgery. I'm wearing a high wasted girdle & a bra with under wires during the day. At night I don't have to wear any of it. My daughter suggested we give the abdominal binder & the surgical bra a proper send off by burning them.
Wynne...I forgot you were from San Antonio. I think Dr. Pisano does all of the out of state patients. Doesn't it feel great to be without the abdominal binder.
Vivian...so glad you got your date. I was the same way the last couple of wks before my surgery trying to get everything done. I felt like I was "nesting".
-
I tried a soft stretchy bra today for a couple of hours. It was so painful. The only reason I lasted that long was because I was in public and couldn't rip it off! Can't even imagine an underwire.
-
the under wire doesn't bother me at all. I'm just glad to be out of the surgical bra.
-
LOL, Teacher. That is so sweet, but sad, what your granddaughter said, "what happened to your soft? That is so cute. I am very conscious of when I hug anybody, especially my grandsons. One fell asleep on me a month, or so ago and his hand landed on my implant, and I didn't even feel it...ugh.
I don't know if it's the same thing, but I had swelly belly after my hysterectomy for months. I use to wear spanx cami's under my blouses to work. They come all the way down to your pubic bone, and are comforting to wear. It helped a lot.
-
Tried a couple hours without a binder and switched to Spanx.....failure! I had an event last Saturday and wore double spanx and it was awesome. I will take the binder over double spanx for daily wear. I will try the binder-free look again next week!
-
J1971, you look great!!!! Is that a party bus, or a train? Hard to tell. Double spanx? You wear one on top of the other? Ouch. That must be fun to get on and off. I hope you are binder and spanx free soon.
-
We live just outside Middlebury. Sorry to miss you too
-
I bought the girdle and bra they recommended at PRMA and have to say I'm not loving them. The binder was actually more comfortable than this girdle. It may be because I'm so short waisted that I have to fold it over or it would come up over my new boobs. Also the bra makes me feel huge! I keep hitting my boobs with my arm which never happened with my originals. My PS said not to use underwire which is good because I hate them.
Also Kim, they have me wearing these 24/7 for another 2 weeks and then days only another 4. I guess even within the same practice each PS does things a little differently. Congrats on the drain, I know that felt good. When did they tell you it would be ok to sleep on your side? I don't really understand why no side sleeping after the drains are all out. Anybody no why that is? I'm ready to get out of the recliner.
Hope everyone has a blessed Easter!
-
J1971, you look fantastic and like you were having a good time. Yeah!
When I've tried spanx, they seem to be full body armor! I can't imagine moving wearing one over another. Power to you!
Wynne, I haven't slept on my side since December. The TEs hurt when I tried and now it's the belly. It's as if everything inside tries to shift to the side, creating pressure. It is very uncomfortable and enough to keep me from sleeping. I've never been a back sleeper til now.
-
I have to go in the day before my surgery (which is Tuesday) for Sentinal Node biopsies. Dreading it. Had one with my first surgery and had a fair amount of skin necrosis. I haven't heard anyone else mention these. Do most of you have this done before surgery?
JMB. I am so sorry your family has to go through this.
Curly. Wow. When it rains it pours. Hope this is the last of your bad luck.
I broke several bones in my foot a few months ago and sprained the other ankle. The day after I got the boot off, my granddaughter dropped a weight on my other foot and broke a toe. Thursday note I woke up about midnight and remembered I had a Cadbury's ice cream bar in the freezer. Ran into the recliner I borrowed for surgery and broke a couple more toes! There has to be a lesson there. Never broke a bone since age 5. Does chemo cause osteoporosis?
-
Just catching up with all the posts. JBM so sorry about your niece, saying prayers for you and your family. Curly how are you feeling? Goldie I think that was photoshop on the Easter kitties. LOL! Where are folks buying wedge pillows and how big are they? I am thinking I may need one. I am having visions of things spilling out the back of our car with all I think I need to take!
Wynne/k79 Miler yay for no more drains! K79Miller thanks for the tips! We are staying in a rented 2 bedroom apartment so I have a room as well as my folks. Hubby is coming down for the first week, then flying back for work and parents will be helping out. Flexibility on the housing re-changing date of departure so good there! Lemon good luck with your pre op testing Monday! Hopefully Easter activities will help us all feel a bit calmer and mind off the upcoming date! Teacher love the “soft” post. Nothing like the cuddle from the people you love most! Naiviv congrats on your date. I am getting my piggy’s painted too. I am about a 1/2 inch ahead of you on hair and have the freakiest color coming back, it is multicolored. My mom says I look like a calico cat! Zenful awesome about being out of the spanks! Just in time for summer! J1971, beautiful!! Iowagirl1, sounds like you have had a rough time with your bones! Have you been dx. with osteoporosis? I now have osteoporosis and Dr contributes it to cancer treatment. I was already osteopenic. Huge disappointment to hear this news. Not loving the idea of being off calcium and vitamin D for 5 weeks for the surgery not to mention the femara. I know they know what they are doing but still a little scary. Wishing everyone a blessed weekend and prayers for everyone who has upcoming surgeries next week and for those to continue to heal.

timtam is the manager of the photo forum. You need patience....she may take some time to reply to you.

Iowa - I had the injection for the SNB the day before Diep surgery, but the actual removal of the sentinel node was done on surgery day using the mastectomy incision (no separate incision under my arm like I have on the other side which was done with a lumpectomy.)
Georgie - I got my wedge pillow at a home-health supply store. It is a couple feet wide, about 3 feet long, and is about 10-12 inches high at one end.
-
Holy cow, Iowagirl! Take care of those toes! You poor thing.
J1971, you look fantastic! Love your dress! I have a love/hate relationship with my spanx. I was using the binder at night, but got sick of that, so haven't been using anything at night, and wearing spanx during the day.
zenful, congrats on ditching the spanx. Did you have much liposuction during stage 2? I'm scheduled for May 29th and am worried about all she wants to lipo... from my knees up to my thighs, and the flank/love handle area. She also might do my tummy if she feels there's anything left there to take. I am concerned that my legs will be swollen with fluid all summer long.
-
Why do they do lipo in Stage 2. I'm nowhere close to that but I am curious about it?
