Hello All,

My mom who is 60 yrs old was just diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 3 breast cancer.  I've been worried sick about her.  I believe it's DCIS because they said it was contained.  She did a lumpectomy and they removed 8 lymph nodes and they said they were negative and she had clear margins.  Hospital also said she was Estrogen Receptor positive I'm worried because they said "grade 3" means aggressive, fast growing.  Right now we have an appointment to find out the results of a Oncotype DX test to find out the likelyhood of it coming back.  Just wondering on prognosis for Stage 1, Grade 3.

Thanks

Hi Muffins - Of course you're worried, but with the treatments today and the early stage of the cancer, the outlook is often very good.  DCIS is always Stage 0 (with grades 1, 2, or 3), so if it is Stage 1 it is not just DCIS.  By contained, they may have meant that with the clear nodes, it has not left the breast.  You'll have to get them to answer your specific questions.  Make sure you and your mom ask until you understand correctly.  Great that it is estrogen-receptor+, as she can use the hormone blockers to help in her treatment.  The Oncotype test will tell you a lot more.  I am not an expert about the grade 3.  If it is Stage 1, as it seems, you should probably go to the Stage 1 section here on the forum; I'm sure there are lots of ladies who've had Stage 1, grade 3.  - P. xx

hi muffins-as Percy said if it's Dcis and contained it should be stage 0,means non invasive bc,which usually have good prognosis as it is in situ means it's not invasive and not able to spread,They say it's pre invasive bc...i have Dcis grade 3 and yes it's the most aggressive however my oncologist said that most Dcis are grade 3. I'm worried too about my high grade with comedown necrosis, however I did Everything, lumpectomy and radiations aggressively .I'm 42 years old.so the hormone therapy is different however my oncologist didn't prescribe any tamoxifen even though I'm highly ER +. You need to ask your mom's doctor and he have to explain to you...there is some blog here on Dcis that explains in details Dcis. You might want to have a look at it. It's very useful. All the best to your mom...

    edited to change name.

Hi Muffins, I was diagnosed with DCIS and IDC in February 2013.  The DCIS is a grade 0 and my IDC is Grade 1.  I will have to look at my report again but I believe it is my DCIS that is considered Grade 3. I do remember the doctor said that Grade 3 is aggressive and fast growing.   I also had extremely large amounts of calcification so it was recommended that I get a radical mastectomy.  During the mastectomy they checked my lymph nodes and found out that the cancer was not evident.  They dissected the sentinel lymph node because  research has found out that is the main delivery system to the body.  I am now on Arimidex for 5 years.   If there is any thing I can help you with, let me know!  Oh I was three weeks short of  60 when I was diagnosed.

Thanks everyone for responding, I appreciate it.  I called the hospital and they told me my mom actually has IDC so I will post this in another section.
