Hi everyone - I have stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. About 5 weeks ago I injured my thumb. At the time it wasn't terrible and I didn't get it checked out. I've had intermittent pain, but nothing too bad. Last monday I noticed my thumb was swollen and was a little more painful. The next morning my wrist was a little swollen and an area (b/w my mid forearm and just above the elbow) was a weird purplish/reddish color. I saw my dr and they ruled out a blood clot and said it was lymphedema. I saw a lymph pt this past monday who said my thumb may be an orthopedic issue and the coloring may be something else. My thumb is the only part of my hand that's swollen (and it's the only part of my whole arm that's consistently swollen) and painful. My dr is trying to get in touch with the pt to get his take on things, but I'm sitting here feeling like I should do something. I was thinking of going to a walk in and getting an X-ray of my thumb/hand. I just don't know what to do and was hoping someone here may have some advice.

Bumping this for you and welcome. Hopefully the experts will come on.

I have no idea what you have but until then don't overuse it and see if elevating it on pillows above your heart level helps. Also check to see if the swelling is less in the morn and increasing throughout day.

Did the lymph PT say it was LE besides orthopedic and coloring issue, or is she stumped too?

Has that coloring changed and is it rapidly growing? If so it could be cellulitis which needs immediate attention. Google, stepup-speakout.org, a website our girls so lovingly created to read more about cellulits and picking out a well trained therapist that is certified if you are not sure about your current PT
