Elevated calcium

Options

Hi everyone,

I recently had routine blood work set up though my MO who wanted to check my liver function due to being on an AI. What came up was a surprise to them and to me. My calcium was at 11.0 and because I had breast cancer, they want to recheck asap. Since I had DCIS, I am confused as to why they seem concerned about my calcium in regards to my BC. Do they think they missed an IDC during my lumpectomy? I understand that bone mets can present with elevated calcium levels but sheesh...

They also mentioned possible parathyroid issues. I read that sometimes having rads can mess with the parathyroid glands. Does that seem more likely? I am having my blood calcium rechecked in two weeks and they told me to push lots of fluids, stay away from calcium rich foods like milk, spinach etc and not to take my Vit D with calcium or my multivitamin. Anyone else have this issue come up?

Thanks in advance for any insight you migh have for me.

Hi April485 - I had DCIS too - with a  mastectomy and I have parathyroid issues - "Hyperparathyroid" and elevated blood calcium levels "hypercalcemia". I did not have rads.  My endocrinologist tells me that it is because of the hyperparathyroid.  I too have worried that maybe it was another "cancer" event. You are not supposed to take calcium with elevated blood calcium levels. Sorry I can't be of any help with your issue, but just wanted to let you know that I am dealing with kind of the same thing.

    hi April485

I was just wondering how your blood tests turned out after you redid them.

I have just had my blood tests come back with raised calcium levels too. I'm not sure if it's the same scale as you are using as the levels we have here are normal between 2.15-2.55 mmol/l and mine was 2.66. Onc not too concerned he said but I am going for a full CT scan now as soon as it's booked in.

Can't help but worry a little but will drink plenty of water and avoid extra calcium and vitamin D for now.
