cdelv66 - it looks like you are healing nicely and the swelling has gone done. Yay!
Great picture Debz - loved it!
Thanks for sharing your story Lakegirl1. I think I may have my husband stay home with my daughter and see if my brother can come to the hospital. I know she would do best with sticking to her routine and I wouldn't expect them to stay in the city for the whole week while I'm in the hospital. I will miss them and it may be a little lonely for me at times. Hopefully I will be too drugged up to notice:)

happyteacher,
Wow, how inappropriate of the principal! In no shape or form should he/she be discussing your medical issues with others, exaggerated or not. I do think it needs to be addressed.
I am not sure how it works for you, do you have some sort of teacher's liason etc? Normally I would say you need to talk to HR, but I expect the principal IS HR?
-
Thanks for the good wishes, surgery got pushed up to 2pm giving me more time to stew.. Can't WAIT til it's over.. Best wishes to all ahead..
-
Ladies, I am happy to "see" you all again
.
Want to send my very best surgery wishes for today to:
- Debzjourney14, Lumpectomy and SNB
- Ninany, NSBMX with tissue expanders
- RamblingRose, UMX
- MakeLemonade, Lumpectomy and port placement
I will be thinking of you all!
I am obviously WAY behind on posts so will try to get caught up shortly. Took a quick review now to add all the new ladies that have joined us. Thank you so much for being here with us and I hope you will feel welcome
. If I have missed anyone, I apologise, and please do PM me so I can correct.
Am finally home from hospital last night. Slightly different procedures here so was not allowed home until all my drains, of which I had 4, could be removed. The last 2 came out yesterday and here I am
.
All in all everything went well. I didn't feel very well for the first 36 hrs-ish due either to some anaesthesia side effects (had none from previous lumpectomy) or my initial post-surgery painkiller (time release morphine tablet). I also tend toward a lower bp generally, so that was a bit of an issue for a time. However after a bag of iv fluids on Saturday I never really looked back. Have not felt ill since
Am finding this numb, tight, compressed feeling extremely odd. But early days I suppose.
To all others who are home post-surgery, I hope you are feeling better every day. And to those yet to come, I hope you are finding some peace amidst the preps.
I look forward to catching up with you all

Hi April Sisters! It has been exactly a week since my surgery. I had a simple mastectomy and was pleasantly surprised to wake up to a reconstruction instead of expanders. I also had a lift on the other side, and the removal of an abdominal lipoma. I have had quite a bit of pain, but have managed pretty well. Every day gets better. I only have one drain, but I will be very happy when it is removed. I purchased a couple of camisoles that have drain holders, and I highly recommend getting those ahead of surgery because they make drains more manageable and comfortable. PM me if you have questions or want to talk.

April 10 - Sesrn, skin sparing UMX with TE, SNB, latissimus flap and augmentation:
Wishing you a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Keep us posted!

Rubiayat...if the pain meds don't make you sleepy...the anti-nausea ones will!!!!
-
No HR. And the principal is one where if you go over his head in any form he gets livid. I don't know... not a good solution in this situation. The last thing I need from him right now is more stress dealing with him being angry... it takes him a looooooong time to get over things. I think what I will do is next time a coworker mentions something specific, I will address it then. Or maybe after surgery... I don't know. I am only a few days away and just don't have the emotional energy to deal with him on this at the moment.
-
Thinking of my surgery sisters who were in today. I go in for my one week follow up tomorrow morning. Will discuss the final pathology and then go next door and meet the oncologist to find out when I'll be starting radiation and all that good stuff. So glad the surgery is behind me! I had a rough time with the anesthesia for FIVE DAYS! That is not at all typical for me so they must have had a different cocktail of meds than I've had before.
One question: My nipple on the surgical side is insanely sore. It feels a bit tight (I'm sure there's got to be some swelling) but the pain feels like overly sensitive nerve pain. Its more annoying than anything else. And I know, I'm lucky I still have a nipple to complain about.
-
My re excision went well, the surgeon feels confident he got it all. Apparently I am going to have a lot of swelling this time because of having to go back in before all swelling was gone from the last time. So far he is right :-). Stitches and dressings all off at lymph node dissection site an also most of the original lumpectomy site. He went back in on the lower part of the original incision and it isn't as large.
Also had the port placed on my right side - now it feels like I overdid it doing pectoral exercises :-)
I spoke with the anesthesiolgist before surgery yesterday and told him of my last experience. He listened and this time was MUCH better on waking! No uncontrolled crying, only a little queasiness, not even enought to call it nausea.
Got to go home in the afternoon and have been sleeping since then. I do hve pain, but that is what Percocet is for ... But have only had to have one. I think icing might be on today's agenda as well
Best news is that I can take a shower tomorrow AND shave and use deodorant - yippee! It's been pretty bad since the original surgery :-)
Medical oncologist next week, sutures out the following week, then I guess will be the next part of this journey.
Best of wishes to everyone having surgery this week! Hope it all goes well!
-
Lespring sorry about your anesthesia reaction. I felt the effects of that last time for several days.
As for your nipple, I had a LOT of swelling so everything felt tight. Actually felt engorged like when I was breast feeding. For at least a week, the surgical breast was bigger than the other one even though he took out a huge chunk of tissue (11x8x6cm). I wonder if the pain is due to swelling? Or, depending on where your surgeon took out the lump, maybe irritated nerves going to the nipple?
-
Hope all went well. Thoughts are with you.

Thinking ahead......surgery on Monday.....how long until radiation begins???
-
Good morning April surgery sisters! My BMX with TEs surgery was on Monday. I came home from the hospital yesterday, and I am feeling pretty good this morning. I slept well in my recliner last night. Home nursing will be coming to see me this morning to check incisions and drains. I plan to shower today and have my husband wash my hair--that should be interesting!
I had to report to the hospital at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. After completing some paper work, I was taken to a presurgery holding room. At 9:30 I was scheduled for my SNB injections. Because of my previous biopsy and lumpectomy, I was scheduled for two shots, one deep and one closer to my areola. The deep shot was given first and was preceded with lidocaine. It hurt but was over fairly quickly. The second shot, which is typically more painful, was not bad at all. This may have been because of the lidocaine that was given earlier or because I just tolerated it well. Either way it was over quickly, and I got through the procedure.
After returning to the presurgery holding room, I was then prepared for surgery where I met with all of the doctors who would be involved with my surgery. My breasts were marked up by both my BS and PS. I was happy to be able to speak to both doctors before surgery. After being wheeled into the operating room, the last thing I remember is being asked to slide over from one table to another.
I was I in surgery for about four hours and according to the doctors everything went well; however, I have not yet received my pathology report. My family was not able to see me until around 7 p.m. I was on a liquid diet but did not eat much that evening. I had a morphine pump throughtout the night and was comfortable. I remember looking at the clock throughout the night, and it moving so slowly.
Unfortunately, I did not have a good morning following my surgery. I was feeling light headed, and my stomach was upset. I was hungry, but I had difficulty eating because my mouth was so dry from the pain medication. My husband got me a milkasake from the snack bar, and that was much easier to get down, Once I was able to get some food into my stomach and switch over to oral pain meds, I felt much better. I was in pain when I moved about, but it was tolerable. The nurses told me that it was normal to be in pain the first few days following surgery, even with pain meds. I did not expect this because everything I had read and was told was that as long as I kept up with the pain medication, I would not have much pain. Not true for me! I do know that everyone is different though.
I was scheduled to be discharged the day after surgery but because I had such a rough morning, I decided to stay in the hospital for another night. I had a two-hour ride home from the hospital and did not feel that I could tolerate it. Staying was a good decision. I felt so much better the next day!
I had to wait almost two months between my lumpectomy and my BMX. The waiting was horrible. I was extremely anxious. I feel so much better today and and am happy with my decision to have a BMX. I can now move on with my reconstruction journey.
Wishing everyone who has had their surgery or facing surgery the best! Please let me know if I can be of any help to you.
Virginia
Update: No shower today. PS says not until drains come out. My husband did wash my hair.
-
vfay:
I am glad to hear you are home and resting and feeling positive about your decision and moving forward.
I will have a 2 1/2 hour drive home after my surgery too, and am a little worried about it. How was it for you? I plan to take pillows/towels for under the seat belt and everything of course, but really am hoping it is not too painful with the vibration, etc.
-
Best wishes to all recovering and those going in. I had my lumpectomy and SNB biopsy yesterday. It was a very long day by the time they placed the guide wire and did the dye injection. My surgery took place almost two hours later than scheduled. My throat is so sore from being intibated(never had it hurt this bad) I woke up coughing after surgery and coughed all night. I thought it strange that I had no wraps or dressings, just glued shut.(no drains) i am very allergic to tapes. I am sore this morning, but will survive. Followup in one week. No node or margin results yet. Didnt even see my surgeon(talked to his assistant before) and he was gone when I woke up. Going to try to rest today.
-
debzjourney. I also had the dye and wire localization before my first surgery. They have to wait for the injection to percolate through your system so that they can identify the lymph nodes. I also had to wait two hours!
I had never had surgery before, so I was surprised that my throat hurt .. I used throat lozenges a few times and it was gone in 2 - 3 days. I used them all up (they were leftover from a cold this winter) and I forgot to get more before my surgery yesterday ... Have to add them to hubby's shopping list.
Get lots of rest!
-
hang in there Lemonade and vfay! Onward on this journey!
-
DiveCat, I had very little discomfort on the way home. I took a pain pill right before being discharged from the hospital that morning. It definitely helped having the extra night in the hospital. I did use a tubular Sqush bean pillow under the seat belt. I feel a soft towel would have worked as well. The nurses suggested we stop half way to let me get out and stretch. We stopped for ice cream!
-
I am fortunate to have received an excellent initial pathology report from my BC surgeon today. An additional 4.5 cm of DCIS was found and removed from my cancerous breast during my BMX. This amount is on top of the 6.2+ cm already removed during my lumpectomy. I also had clean margins and a clean SNB. My left breast showed no signs of cancer.
-
Thanks vfay - we always stop for Slurpees or Tim Horton's and gas halfway home from Calgary anyway!
Glad to hear your pathology came back with clean margins, etc! Was the additional DCIS in same area as the DCIS removed previously?
-
DiveCat, I don't know for sure, but I am assuming the DCIS was in the same area. My lateral and posterior margins were not clear following my lumpectomy.
-
I'm another who squeaks in right at the end of April - April 30. Just finished 4 rounds of taxotere and herceptin after 4 rounds of FEC- my tumours have shrunk considerably so I'm very glad all that poison is doing what it's supposed to. By the end of the month I'll be recovered enough to have a mastectomy to remove my right breast and all the nodes under my arm. They'll spare what skin they can for eventual reconstruction, but since I have 25 days of radiation it will be later in the year when they put in an expander and all that good fun.
I'm grateful for the tips I've seen on here but still very nervous about it all since this is the first surgery of any kind for me. I have a high pain tolerance but am looking forward to kicking the last of my final chemo side effects and moving on to this. After 6 months of chemo it's exciting but scary to be moving on to the next stage.
-
I really appreciate the detail in your post. I wish you a speedy and gentle recovery!
-
Hi all-
So it's Day 2, the surgery went great. Both the BS and PS are quite pleased with the results so far. They were able to save my nipples and I have 400cc fills in my expanders already. Which, to be honest is kind of painful but if I'm diligent about asking for my Valium, it's manageable. Here's a pic.
The worst part was the post anaesthesia nausea which made for a very rocky night last night. Also trying to pee and not being able to and then trying to walk to the bathroom before having my next round of pain meds. Try to schedule any moving around @30 min after percoset and Valium, it makes ALL the difference. Today is much better and I am able to move around a bit. But I will be staying another night because my blood pressure is a bit low. Otherwise, I am hopeful for a smooth recovery. I get path results next week, so fingers crossed. I wish everyone the best of luck on their upcoming procedures and congrats to those who have made it through!
-
Wow, 400 cc's already! Even with the bandages you already look great
I am going to make sure to really emphasize that I tend to get very nauseous very easily. I have never been "put under" but I am pretty sensitive to almost any other drug. Hopefully they get the point! My 2.5 hour car ride home will be much, much worse if I feel nauseous, too.
I'll keep my own fingers crossed (mentally, at least) for your path results.
-
Wow. So much going on here. I'm very glad things are going (mostly) well for everyone. I also had a wicked sore throat after surgery too. But it went away quickly. (My surg. was April 1) I have exciting news to share... My 4 drains are out. PS said healing everything looks good. I have to wear a surgical bra/or a supportive front close bra 24/7. They told me not to waste my money on anything expensive. I liked that. They gave me one to start. But, really, the very best of all is that my breast surgeon called to give me my path report: Complete path response (and clinical response that we knew). I am so relieved. I occasionally get teary over it. I had neoadjuvant chemo and am going to take Herceptin till Nov. I'm supposed to start tamoxifen soon too. I'm still quite tired and sleep a lot. Trying to do the exercises they gave me. Head still spinning a little from it all sinking in I think.
Sending all good thoughts to all April ladies, whether prepping or recovering.
-
Sesrn, hope your surgery went well.
Debkayr, good luck with your surgery tomorrow.
I know I've missed sending good wishes to some of you who've had surgery in the last few days, so a big Ehug to all I've missed. I've been down with a bad cold and haven't been on the boards for a few days. I was concerned that if I couldn't shake the cold they would postpone my surgery, but as long as there's no sinus infection, fever, or chest congestion, we're still good to go.
Today was my last day of work before surgery, so I have a few days to get the house clean and ready and pick up the last few items. Still have to find some front close sports bras, which has proven to be more difficult than I expected.
Since it was my last day, I had lunch with two coworker friends. They gave me a Amazon gift card so I could get some Kindle books to read, and a Pandora Guardian Angle charm for good luck (they know I have Pandora). One of them is bringing over dinner Easter Sunday since I won't be cooking this year. They really made my day!
-
Hi, Aprils! Hope everyone pre-and post-op is doing well....had my last appt w my PS prior to my 4/30 surgery...decided to do the expanders rather than the direct to implant....Tough decision that I'm sure I will dwell on for the next 19 days (not that I'm counting!), but after lots of research and discussion, it seems like the right option for me. I'm terrified, but ready to get this show on the road!
