To Pre-Menopausal Women: Period after taking Tamoxifen
I have been taking Tamoxifen for almost 5 years, - by this August actually.
I have been taking Zoladex injection in the first 3.5 years, then that injection was stopped and I have been on Tamoxifen only since then, no period at all since the 1st injection. In the last year I sometimes could see my secretions was darker than usually, but not obvious. Did couple of ultrasound exams, and saw family doctor every 6 months also saw gynecologist twice and was told nothing unusual with my uterine and ovaries.
Today my period suddenly comes, I am so scared..... (I am 47yo btw)
Did anyone get period coming back after you stopped Tamoxifen? Or even when you were taking Tamoxifen? I am still on Tam now. How did you deal with it? What did your doctor say? Any further treatment after Tamoxifen?
I know there might be lots of discussion about it, if anyone could send me a link of related topics that would be appreciated as well.

I started taking Tamoxifen in October 2012. Had my last period October 31st, then nothing for a year and 4 months until February of this year, 2014. My oncologist said that it was no big deal. (Easy for him to say!) He said to worry if the period doesn't stop. It was extremely heavy, but it stopped after a week. It's been almost 2 months and nothing since then. I'm 43, and had chemo and radiation in 2012. Hope that helps some.

Hi, anndh
I was dx at your age 43.
2 friends of mine are 5 years older than me, both of them took Chemo and radiation, then both of them had period stopped.
I think chemo stops most of women's periods. Hope your period stops as well so you don't need to worry about it until 5 years later.

Bump it up:
Does anyone know what is the percentage of Pre-menopausal women still get period when taking Tamoxifen?
-
Hi. i was getting periods on tamoxifen and then they stopped and then started again and then i had an US and then had to have hystoscopy as they could not see because my womb was abnormaly shaped.ike straight up and down, most tilt either backwards or forwards. then they found a thickened lining and so put an imediate stop on tamoxifen and i am not on anything at present, waiting for them to get back to me, they doing a three month review. so i donot know what they are up to just waiting/ have mamo in june, so hope no evil is lurking like new cancers or recurrances. .

I started tamoxifen in September 2009 ( age 48, premenopausal). My periods were fairly normal, about six weeks in between. I saw my gynecologist every year for an ultrasound of the uterus, because of the side effects of tamoxifen. Apart from a polyp that gave me extreme bleeding ( had to be taken out), no issues. In January 2014 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Last period at that time was September 2013 ( before that June 2013, March 2013). In January I had a bilateral mastectomy and stopped taking tamoxifen. I had a period at March 2014, and started bleeding again at March 29th. Haven't stopped since, so I have an appointment for an ultrasound and an appointment with my gynecologist.

I've been on tamoxifen since January of this year. I haven't had a period since. I get some ovary crampiness once in a while but that's my only SE.
-
I am premenopausal (47). My periods have remained regular since I started tamox at the beginning of Jan. My onc said they should be normal until my body goes through menopause. I did not have chemo. I did just have a hysteroscopy/D and C because of abnormally thick uterine lining and it was all normal. My OB will be checking me via ultrasound every year to make sure the uterine lining is not thickening due to tamox.
-
Hi, Piano-girl,
Did your doctor tell you how many of pre-menopausal women will still get periods when taking Tamoxifen? or roughly what's the percentage?
I saw your other post my uterus thickness was 1.2cm before I took Tam and my doctor was not concerned at that time, then it's been getting thinner these years during the treatment.
Do you have fibroid?
Pls keep us updated.
-
hiva---my oncologist told me 25% will continue to get normal periods, 50% will have irregular periods, and 25% will stop altogether, while taking tamoxifen. Mine becam very light and very irregular.

I'm 48 and skipped a couple periods last year, so I may be close to menopause and that's why I haven't had a period in three months. My MO said it wouldn't put me into menopause, that I would still have period symptoms but may not bleed. I'm a boater and spend a lot of time in/on the water, so no complaining here.
-
I had a period 1 year after chemo while on tamox...my onc then shut me down using zoladex. I did those for 10 months and then stopped...got my period back again after 5 months and then resumed zoladex. My friend on tamox gets her periods every 2 months or so and they are lighter then before
-
Hi, Anne,
I remember I saw these % somewhere years ago but can't remember where.
Did your onc tell you having periods is not good as it indicates estrogen level in body is still high?
Did anyone else doctors say anything about it?
-
My periods returned after 6 months of Tamo - had 5 periods or so and now nothing for 4 months! At the time it returned I too was quite concerned and started "researching" the subject. I don't have the studies here but I recall it COULD be but not necesseraly is a bad prognostic sign if periods return. There were some indications that having many menopausal symptoms during tamo is a good sign (hot flashes, etc and I guess no periods). I was told that I should take 30-40 mg Tamo if my periods continued. Reduced breast density is a good prognostic sign.

Been on Tamoxifen for a year now. Periods are lighter and longer in between than they had been, but still regular. I didn't do any chemo to disrupt them though. I'm 46, will be 47 in June, but my mom didn't go through menopause until she was 55, so I suspect I still have a ways to go.
-
hlya: No, I didn't have a fibroid.
My onc said I should be getting periods until my regular menopause time (my mom was also older so it could be a while). She also said I may start experiencing heavier/longer periods but so far that hasn't happened. I've been doing the happy dance that I haven't experienced tamox symptoms. Now you guys are making me nervous! Here's hoping for hot flashes?!
-
Hi, new_direction
I remember people talked about it years ago, but still no conclusion. it's frustrating.
-
Hi,Annette,
Yes, genetic factor is one of the key factor. If your mom didn't go through menopause until 55 then you will have a much bigger chance to go through the same thing as her.
-
Hi, Piano-girl
What is the thickness of your uterus lining?
I personally don't think you need to worry about not having any other "Tamoxifen symptoms", they might not be the medication related. They might be just how your body naturally react to menopause (not Tamoxifen). Did your mom have lots of symptoms when she went through menopause, eg. hot flashes and the others?
-
I've been on Tamoxifen since January. Had my period that month but haven't had it since. I do get more cramping now and more often. Does anyone else get that? My hot flashes so far haven't been that bad. I hope it stays that way :-)
-
Ive also had cramps a couple of times. Thought it would result in a new period - but so far nothing! I don't know really if it has any special meaning but I just like to think as long as the periods stay away it's a better sign. My onc said if the periods continued I could try 30 mg to see if new menopausal symptoms would arise - meaning I wasnt fully "covered" with just 20...
-
my only side effect is the mild crampiness also. Mine feels more like ovary crampiness like what I used to get at ovulation time, but still no period since I started taking tam.
-
i had a couple of periods this summer. I've been experimenting (BAD patient) taking 20 mg + 10 mg some days where I get the cramps as if period is on its way. This has seemed to increase my hot flashes a little and so far the periods have not returned.I also added DIM because I read this was much better - the combination - in the beginning this increased my hot flashes as well. I take that as a good sign although I cannot help wondering; I think the tumor consists of many different types of cells. When hormone positive - this means SOME of the cells responds to tamoxifen. Does tamoxifen then work as non-effective antibiotic giving more space and life to the cancer cells which are triple negative?
When cancer comes back it has often changed it's characteristics. Well just thoughts, I don't dare not doing what im doing.

I just began my Tamoxifen treatment plan so I will have to wait and see if there is a change in my periods. I'm 47 and have always been and still am like "clock work." I actually saw my GYN on the 4th day after the start of Tamoxifen. She told me that it may not affect my periods at all since I am still so regular that I will probably remain the same. The patients she sees that are in my age range that have to begin taking Tamoxifen have usually gone through chemo first which will stop the periods and throw them into menopause. The ones like me who are still very regular in their cycle and the treatment is just Tamoxifen and no chemo usually never see a change until it is the natural time for their body to go through menopause. At least that is what I was told. My GYN did ask that I begin charting exactly what day I start and how many days the period last and how heavy. She said to call if the periods become extremely heavy or was still happening by day 10.
-
Are ya'll saying that the less se's you experience on tamoxifen the less it could be working? I'll have to ask my MO about this! -
Finished chemo a month ago, and my period is back already (didn't have one through 5 months of chemo). Will start tamoxifen after rads.
-
some doctors use ovarian suppression as well in the premenopausal. I asked for this but was told they usually didn't do this in premenopausal women - giving the side effects. However I think ovarian suppression is added the minute there is disease progression. There seems to be some benefit to it - but maybe the side effects are too "harsh" if you plan to live +50 years (?).

OK ladies, I am 56 and still primenopausal..( Blood test.)...Taking Tamoxifen for 2,5 years...They told me, if you see some blood, it is OK, but if it is MUCH, it is not OK...I had it after intercourse... this is one of uterus cancer signs... ultrasound next week... Scared of results and dreadful about endometrial biopsy ( had one, could not finish) My question is: how much is much? I had about a spoon...I hope it will be OK...
-
Olgah - I'm 54 and premenopausal. I've had two incidence of discharge and bleeding this year, both times it was uterine polyps (common on T) which my gyn excised. I know we jump to the endo cancer possibility, but I was able to calm myself down when I realized my odds of that are normally 1 per 1000 wo Tamoxifen, 2 per thousand with it.
