Frostecat, are you sure your surgeon (breast surgeon or plastic surgeon, I'd try both) doesn't have an on-call surgeon for urgent matters from existing surgical patients? My breast surgeon's office has that. That's how I ended up with a prescription for antibiotic (Levaquin) when I ended up with an infection late in the evening (I think it was a Sunday evening around 9 pm). I'd call the office (again, try both your surgeons if the first one doesn't), and listen carefully to the message. When I called my BS's office, the message was different than when I call during business hours, and gave an on-call number to call for existing patients who have an urgent issue. I called that number, left a message, and the on-call surgeon called me back within 5 minutes!!

Something about your situation with your drain doesn't sound right.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that you can reach an on-call doc!!

    Keep us posted, ok?

Well I decided it was just best to call the PS office.  The PS himself called me and joked at me about playing Macgyver.  He said it sounds like a slow leak, and to keep re-compressing the bulb every hour or two.  He said the small plastic piece floating shouldn't make that much of a difference.  He asked how much it is putting out, and I said I am 11 days post op and it was about 40cc's yesterday, and he said the drain is getting pulled Monday morning, and to call the office to get it taken out.  I told him I was worried about bacteria backing up, and he said don't worry about it, that it won't back up.  I guess it's a relief knowing I will be rid of this thing on Monday!!  (happy dance).

Good morning ladies, I'm very late to the party but I had my surgery in March as well.  I had a BMX with immediate reconstruction/implants so I've been hanging out over in the One Step with Alloderm thread.

Holly, I just went through all my papers from the hospital, doctors, etc. earlier this morning trying to figure out what we should scan (in case we need anything for future reference) and what I can pitch.  At my pre-op visit with my PS the day before my surgery he said I could shower three days after surgery.  In looking through all my paperwork this morning, there were instructions about showering in two different places - the info packet from my PS and the discharge paperwork from the hospital.  If you can't find anything in writing, I agree, I'd wait and call your doctor's office on Monday.  We've been using antibacterial soap in the shower since right before my surgery and my skin is so dry. It's making me crazy.  I'm going to switch back to Dove when I shower today and just use the other soap in my chest area.  We asked the nurse at the PS office about that yesterday when I went in to have a drain removed (finally!) and she said it was fine.  Today is day 17 post op and I still have one drain left.  Hopefully next week I can get rid of it too!

Frostecat, lucky you!  They want mine down around 20 for two days in a row before they'll pull it.

ucfmom, My PS usually requres 30cc or less for two days, but I think he figured as long as I am having trouble with it, and by Monday that gives it a couple of more days.  I always wondered about the one step procedure, it seems soo much easier than having to keep going back in for more fills and surgery.  If I could have had one and done I so would have.

Frostecat, so happy you got in touch with your PS! Glad to hear the drain is coming out on Monday.

Gotta run and take my 9 year old son to his cello lesson at the university, but I wanted to check and see if you had updated. Glad all is well!

It sounded perfect to me - only one surgery and I'd be done, almost too easy.  Unfortunately, while everything went great with the surgery, the pathology report didn't show clear margins by my right nipple - and my BS got as close as possible.  So now I will have at least one more surgery on 4/18 to have that nipple removed.   Oh well, we gave it a shot, too bad it didn't work out.  Then I get to decide whether to have a new nipple reconstructed or have a 3D.  I'm leaning toward the tattoo but my PS office doesn't do 3D so I'd need to go elsewhere for that.  I'm not going to rush into it until I know for sure which way I want to go.

Here's what my husband Mike and I did this morning. San Antonio's Race for the Cure is one of the largest in the nation.

I had to sit down a couple of times, but made it while doing a leisurely walk. Not bad for 2 weeks post op #4. The race was held at Sea World.

Sandra, Sandra, Sandra!!!! Love, love, love your pics! Our Race 4 the Cure is coming up soon. I need to get on it, but I can't imagine walking a block let alone 3 miles. I'm almost 2 weeks post and hopefully a liitle more time will make a huge difference. I have alot of friends, family and coworkers that want to do it with me so I can't let them down.

Surgery #4 was my easiest. I wasn't sure if I could do it since we registered for the race before the surgery date was known, but I figured I could stand on the sidelines and cheer the others on at the very least. Saw several women in wheel chairs and blankets. It was windy and about 50 degrees at the start.

Sandra, yeah for you! I can't imagine how you ever accomplished that. Which is making me wonder how everyone else is progressing. I would by no means be able to come close to doing something like that. Short trips to the store wear me.out. I haven't driven yet either. Am I babying myself too much? I am still having a lot of discomfort with the expander and am dreading my appointment Wednesday for my next fill. Is everyone else getting life back to normal?

Sandra, that's awesome you were able to do that only two weeks post op!  I had my BMX one step two days before your surgery and went on my first "outing" today that wasn't a doctor appointment since my surgery.  My husband took me to Target to buy an electric shaver since I've been fretting about the jungle growing under my arms.  Neither my BS or PS said whether or not I could use a razor, but I figured better safe than sorry because I keep forgetting to ask.  Anyway, 20 minutes in Target and I was done for the day, had to come home and plop down in the recliner.  lol  I'll be glad when I get my last drain out so I can be more active and build my energy level back up.

Great pictures, Sandra.  I did the walk for a friend years ago.  My BF said we should do the next walk that's in the area.

KLJ and Ucfmom, I think fatigue is completely normal.  I'm starting back to work Monday and I'm really going to miss my 2 PM naps!  I hope I can jump right back in and be the hard worker I've always been.  I'm a little nervous.  Everyoby there knows why I've been out a month.  With my 300cc expanders, I think I actually look a little bigger than I was.  I bet my coworkers will curiously check out my chest size :-p

Sandra- great picture! I don't know if I can do that right now.

Julie- I go back to work on the 14th and I will miss my naps also. I just hope I can make it through the day. I work 4 days a week, off on Wednesdays so I think I will be ok. Staying at home has been very boring to me since I really can't lift anything, so not cleaning much. Well one more week to heal and then back to reality!

Wow, Sandra, that's an amazing accomplishment, even with taking some rest breaks! I know I couldn't do that right now!! Great pics too.

I'm starting to teach violin lessons again next week, but I only have 4 students a week, so I know it won't be a problem. I have worked up my violin playing to 2 stretches of 15 minutes each by now, so hopefully by Monday I'll be able to play and practice closer to an hour total. I used to practice 1.5 to 2 hours each day, plus I had a 2 hour orchestra rehearsal on Mondays, and then also played some while teaching. Slowly but surely I'm working up to being able to do that again; each day it's a little less painful. Also doing my PT exercises twice a day.

I am also still dealing with fatigue, fortunately at this point it mostly hits me in the evening. It's 8 pm now and I'm getting really tired again. Still have to do my 2nd session of PT exercises, and make sure my kids get their butts in bed. My youngest is taking a shower right now, I just fed him another snack - both my kids seem to have hollow legs; all I do all day is feed them, and hear "mommy I'm starving"! LOL

Anyway, I haven't been taking any naps anymore since after the first week after surgery, but I do seem to need more sleep at night still, between 8.5 and 9.5 hours (normally need 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep). But I do ok most of the day with that, until about 7 or 8 pm, then it gets tough.

I went shopping for another couple of new very light short sleeved buttoned tops today to wear over tank tops. Guess I'm using this occasion as an excuse to buy some new clothes; most of my shirts (and clothes in general) are really old, quite a few of them are older than my kids (both are 9 right now)! Even though I'm not much of a shopper most of the time, this time shopping for new clothes has been quite therapeutic! I bought 3 tops so far. Probably better stop soon though, before DH starts complaining! LOL

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

You all make me wish I had a job to go back to. Finding a job in our small town was my goal when we moved back here from Florida. I hadn't planned for breast cancer, finding doctors, and surgery. Big time change of plans. I have always worked as a dental assistant which requires being on your feet all day and using your arms a lot. I think I will set my goal to start walking a few short walks a day and work up. Baby steps.

A few years ago, I did the 3 day walk. (60 miles), and my friend, who had breast cancer, reconstruction, chemo, etc. did it with us.  She was still in the process of chemo, no hair, and had her exchange surgery, I believe.  She was probably about 6-9 months from diagnosis.  I had NO IDEA at the time how demanding this must have been for her. She is a 'do it all', 'no complaining' kind of girl. She was 30 years old, pregnant with her 2nd baby, when she was diagnosed.  She had a C-section a couple of days after diagnosis, and her BMX with TE placement 2 weeks after that.  I cannot even imagine.  And, I didn't appreciate, at the time, how incredibly difficult this must have been.  I can certainly appreciate it now.  Can you say "GUILT"?!!!  I just had no idea.

Cheers to you, Sandra!!!   I will be there on Mother's Day, when the "walk for the cure" is here in Mpls.  I used to get up early to do the run, then meet my friends and family to do the walk right after.  I think I'll just do the walk this year!!!  LOL!!!

Sandra - you go girl!  Great pics.  I'm with the 2pm naps too.  I get up feeling good, then about 2pm wow I want a nap.  I've never been a nap person either.  I will say every day gets a little better though, haven't taken percocets for a couple of days now and that makes a huge difference.  The thought of going back to work I know I wouldn't be able to make it the whole day without a nap, but hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be there.  I was thinking maybe of working 3 days the first week just to ease back into it.  Personally, for me it would be a lot to hit a 5 day week right out of the gate.  My hubby and I got out yesterday for lunch, the weather is FINALLY breaking in these parts and it's so nice to see the sunshine.  Might take a ride to the lake today.

How is everybody's weekend going? I'm having a really good weekend so far. I finally felt well enough to make it to church this morning. Then I was able to really practice (not just play) my violin for half an hour in one stretch, with very little discomfort, made lunches and enjoyed my own yummy and healthy, organic lunch outside on the patio. I just finished my PT exercises (the first session, will need to do another one later today). I'm about to have a cup of green/ginger tea, while enjoying the cacti in the backyard, and then I get to go to a really good chamber music concert, ON MY OWN!!! It's a series we usually go to together, but my husband didn't think I'd be up to it yet, so he ended up scheduling play dates for both kids (he arranged that last weekend apparently), so of course they don't want to miss out on those. I'm actually really excited about going on my own, not having to worry about whether or not the kids will behave. Then, since I will be home too late to make dinner, my husband will pick up some sushi and sashimi for dinner tonight! Hopefully I'll have enough energy left after that to play a little more violin too tonight.

I hope everyone is healing well and enjoying a great weekend. I'm having a blast, and feeling really grateful and happy to be where I am today!

Sending lots of hugs to each and everyone one of you wonderful ladies!!!

After the 5k yesterday we came home with the idea that we would both be running errands, etc. after a short break. I was looking forward to going downtown to the main library for the 2nd Annual Book Festival with 70 authors in attendance. Then last night was a spring dance with our favorite band. I was sure I could do all three.

Instead I sat down to read and fell asleep for an hour. Then I changed clothes, made lunch, and sat down to eat it. Next thing I knew I had slept from noon to 4. I didn't get to see any of the authors and Mike and I didn't go to the dance last night either. Today I have achy legs...goodness I'm so out of shape!

Up until fifteen months ago I was a 64 year old long time fitness instructor, working all day as an accountant and then changing clothes to rush to the gym on Randolph AFB to teach two classes every day, including Saturday mornings. (I was the original Zumba instructor in south Texas and also taught Pilates.) Mike and I taught ballroom dance Friday and Saturday evenings. Busy? Yes, but this was normal life for us. Then I had a brain stem stroke, and had to quit everything. About the time I was making progress in rehab, I got the breast cancer diagnosis. The last 7 months has been one surgery after another. I guess achy legs is to be expected. I'm hauling around 35 more pounds these days, my balance isn't what it used to be, and my lung capacity sucks...hence the rest breaks during the walk. But I'm alive! Early retirement isn't so bad and Mike and I get along well. Tomorrow we are spending the day looking for beautiful Texas wildflowers in the Hill Country. Life can be good, even when it's different.

Sandra this is where they coined the phrase "making lemonade out of lemons", or maybe even a margarita!  You're making the best of your situation so don't be too hard on yourself.  I for one couldn't keep up with you!

I slept from 2:00 - 6:00 today and all I did was go to Target yesterday!  I thought I was getting past the necessary afternoon naps, but my body says differently.  Actually, I woke up around 3:30 and found some cookies our youngest son and his girlfriend made this afternoon on a plate next to me, ate them, got up and went to the bathroom, sat back down and immediately fell back to sleep. lol

I had originally hoped (pre-surgery) to be going back to work tomorrow, but that's not happening.  I still have one drain in and need to get rid of that first, then try to build up my energy level a little before attempting to go back.  I've been doing a little work from home, mainly editing timesheets and getting payroll ready and will be doing that from home again this week.  Depending on the drain coming out, I may try to go in for half days Thursday and Friday to ease back into things.  Otherwise, it will likely be next week and will probably still do short days.  I think the first thing I will do when I get the drain out is go get a haircut!  I planned to go the day before my surgery and got lazy and skipped it.  Actually, I just didn't want anyone touching me.

At this point, the only bras I have that I can wear are a couple sports bras we bought specifically for after surgery wear.  Not really work appropriate, but I don't want to go bra shopping until my incisions are completely healed.  Plus, my muscles are still stretching out over my new implants and really don't know how long it takes until they look the way they are supposed to be.  I have the Allergan 410 gummies and they sure don't look the way my real boobs looked, at least not yet.  I think I will just be wearing loose tops to work for the time being.
