Please help here..

My mom went for a checkup and was initially diagnosed with 4mm breast cancer stage 1 and doctor suggested lumpectomy.

When she went to another doctor for another opinion, he requested an ultra sound guided FNAC on her right breast.

The report said:

"microscopic exam : Smear shows epithelial cells arranged as acini in
framents and in singly scattered cells. Few cells show atypia

Impression: BENIGN PROLIFERATIVE BREAST DISEASE WITH ATYPIA"

Can someone please help here?

Q) How does this compare with the 1st doctor's recommendation?

Q) What should be the suggested course of action?

Q) Should she go ahead with her scheduled surgery?

We are all very confused and worried.

Can you get a second opinion read on the slides that resulted in the stage 1 dx?  I'd be concerned that the 2nd biopsy did not hit the right area, or did not get a sufficient sample.  I don't know the answers to your questions regarding treatment, but if it were me, I'd want to clear up the discrepancy between the 2 results before making a decision about how to proceed.

    Hi Sarahjane734,

Thanks very much for your note - appreciate it and hope you are recovering well.  I will find out if it is possible to get a second opinion on the slides from 1st test.

If we cannot get a second opinion on stage 1 dx, should we go for a third opinion?

    Thanks,

I hate to say it but I do think you need a tiebreaker.  Or an explanation as to what could cause two very different results.  Is the second opinion aware of the first?  I don't know how much the treatment would change - they may do an excision for  atypia too, not really sure. But there's a big difference between that and BC.
