I did say something to the BS on the hospital about the Oncotype but quite frankly I can't remember what she said, I was kind of out of it at the time.  Is anyone else experiencing a raw rubbing feel under their arm/armpit area?  I tried putting baby powder on but geez it's bothering/slightly hurting me.  Any suggestions?

Yes Frostecat, most of my pain is in my armpits.  I feel swelling and rubbing and achiness.  When I look at where it hurts, it is not where there are any incisions for the SNB or anything.  When I raise my arms over my head. the armpits feel very tight.   Across my chest there is more of a raw prickly feeling.  I see my PS in the morning and I'm going to ask if I can start lubing up my dry, tight chest with unscented lotion or something.  I might get my first fill :-)

My Onc told me yesterday it was normal because they did a lot of stuff in there...scooping out breast tissue, etc.  I guess in a 6 hour surgery they did do a lot of crazy things.

Julie, I don't know what is causing it, at first I thought the bra rubbing, but I wear a bra anyways, then I thought maybe if I put a soft rubbery type cosmetic sponge that might help?  Please let me know what your PS says, I asked the nurse today, and she wasn't much help, she skipped to numbness, but that isn't the problem it's rawness.  I almost feel like if I could get one of those things where my arm is lifted from my body, like in a shoulder surgery, that would help.

For those who will be getting a port I recommend having the doc mark you with a bra on so you know where the straps are - you can choose to have the port placed where it will be covered if you want to hide the scar, or away from straps if you think they will irritate the port area.

For the raw skin feeling you may want to try something with slip like Aquaphor that creates less friction and a barrier.

I made it through the entire day without taking any painkillers! Which is great because I was in a Percocet haze most of yesterday. I had an appointment with my medical oncologist this afternoon and we have a treatment plan - TCH (Taxotere, carboplatin, and Herceptin). I insisted on taking some time to go to California to visit my family first, so I'll probably start chemo the week after Easter. Mom will fly back with me to be here for my first chemo cocktail. I'll be joining the port of the month club, too!

Glad to see good news from so many of you. I can't imagine what kind of head space I'd be in if I hadn't found this discussion board.

I don't have the raw skin feeling under my armpit, but that is definitely where the worst pain is, from the my side down next to my (left) breast, to under my armpit, to the underside of the beginning of my arm. It's also that whole area that was hurting when I played my violin, and when I was driving, but it seems to get better with small amounts of activity, so I'm trying to stick with that, trying to not overdo it. It seems to be both quite sore and numb at the same time, which I find kind of strange. I also have a big lump under my armpit, that I just noticed last night. There was a lot of lumpiness before the drain was removed, but that was all from the drain. All but one lump disappeared when the drain came out. Not sure if that lump is swelling from where she removed the sentinel nodes (4 of them), or if it's another node that is swollen after the surgery. Other than that, I have virtually no pain left, but I know that the side, armpit and under arm pain will take a long time to fully heal. Hoping my physical therapist will have some helpful exercises.

So when do you ladies all start shaving under your arms? It's getting really bad under there. I was considering shaving under the right (unaffected) armpit, but then couldn't really reach there with my left arm easily without pain, and then I didn't see the point to go through the pain if I couldn't shave the other side...  :)

Oh, and wow, 6 or 12 hour surgeries?! I think mine was around 1.5 hours. But maybe that's because I didn't reconstruction?

I will know more details on Monday when I see my MO, but BS's office called about an hour ago. CRNP said it was a good report. As I mentioned somewhere, both the MO and the BS said they could not feel the tumor after my chemo but apparently there was some of it left. The BS removed 1 cm during the mastectomy. Monday's surgery confirmed previous tests that showed no angiolymphatic (?) invasion and no lymph node involvement. I had really hoped the chemo had gotten the tumor that was left from the original core needle biopsy, but apparently the BS needed something else to do!

I have only taken Tylenol Extra Strength since the BMX, but I'm thinking about hitting the Percocet. This stuff is not for sissies!

As for ports, I was so glad I had one. As I was getting my IV on Monday for the BMX, I was thinking how much I wish they could have used my port. My port was removed during the BMX, and the scar is not that visible.

I can't say enough about how awesome you ladies are on this forum! If I have a question about SEs or anything, someone on here has usually been there, done that!

    Keep smilin', keep shinin'...

Vinmama, I also have hard lumps in my armpit on the SNB side.  My onco did an exam and said it was normal and will resolve.  She said it takes up to a year to fully heal!  My bilateral with tissue expander was estimated to be 4 hours but was 6.  I asked the surgeon about it taking 2 hours longer.  I asked, "Did anything interesting happen?"  He said nope!

I am so thankful to have found these community boards! My surgery is scheduled for April 10,2014.. Right mastectomy with tissue expander reconstruction, possible latissimus dorsi flap. Also having an augmentation on the left breast. Very overwhelmed with everything, the closer it gets the more anxious I get

sesrn... The waiting was so much worse than the actual surgery for me. I'm 6 days post surgery and doing well, but the week before I was a mess.  Just remember how many of us have gone before you and did fine.  You will too!

sesm....hang in there.  I still feel like I need to be talked off a wall sometimes.  It's all so overwhelming, but the women here have so much knowledge and are so helpful.  Come here with your questions, concerns....even your tears.  We all have big shoulders.  I wish you didn't have to be here at all, but since you are here...welcome :-)

Glad to hear everyone for the most part is doing well after our BIG month.  I'm sorry that many of you beauties are either facing or might be facing chemo.  I know that you are strong and will fight hard and kick this to the curb and down the sewer drain where it belongs.

Julie, I was in a similar situation as you after my lumpectomy.  No nodes involved but my Oncologist was initally concerned about margins (thus my choice for the mastectomy) as well age and the invasive size being right at 5mm.  My Onco DX test came back at 13, fairly low.   HER2 was tested twice and both times came back equivocal.  Oncologist still wasn't sure if she wanted to take chemo completely off the table, she felt I was fairly borderline for chemo treatment. With that said, she decided to take my case to a BC KU medical conference to get several other opinions.  They concluded that Chemo won't be necessary.  It's an uncomfortable feeling to be somewhat boderline and it would be nice to have a more cut and dry pathology report.  I have my next appointment with Onco 4/15 to discuss pathlology report from Mastectomy, which didn't seem to show anything more concerning based on BS.  But I'll let the Oncologist decide.  I think she will still recommend Tamoxifan as we originally discussed.  My personal opinion is to get at least a couple of opinions if at all possible.  I had two opinions from the get go after my initial biopsy and ended up going with my 2nd opinion.  Both were great and highly valued each other as doctors, it just came down to who I felt had most experience and who I was most comfortable with.

Tissue expaners are starting to feel more palable and squishy.  Anyone else feeling that or is it just me?  Gravity pulling the saline down?  They are SO annoying.  I'm curious if I will hate them more squishy and moving around (aliens in me) or when they are completely filled.  My next fill is on Monday.

On a lighter note, got out today, went to the salon and got beautified.  Goodbye gray hairs for now! SillyHeart

Sesm - I'll echo what others have said, the waiting was probably the most difficult element of my journey to date.  I was at peace with the decision and no second guessing but the uncertainty of how I would feel after surgery was so frightening.  I'm two weeks out and feel quite good.  Off meds and just working on mobility.  Remember to take lots of deep breaths.  It'll be okay.

Thanks for sharing, Iwannaseeyoubebrave.  It's frustrating that just as soon as you have things figured out, things change and you're back to researching.

Sesm, it's great you found this site and these boards.  It's a wealth of information.   My surgery and recovery was much easier than I expected in my mind.  This March thread and earlier monthly threads aill give you an idea of what to expect.  I also found it helpful watching "mastectomy recovery" videos on youtube beforehand.  Seeing women smiling and walking around the next day was comforting.  Best of luck to you.

    good morning all!

Just wanted to share about my experience with the arm pain. Here I am 2 weeks and 3 days since surgery. Woo hoo!  No more drains staples dressings or steri strips!!  I'm out there and loving every minute of it!!  Lol

As for pain - seems similar to many of you - my armpit is numb - back of my left arm feels numb with a sunburn at the same time. Seems that the numbness is on the outside - burning sensation is on the inside. If I shake my arm I feel the burning. The burning extends into my left shoulder blade and into my chest at times my range of motion continues to improve although I do feel very tight and feel that if I stretch I might rip or tear something inside

My surgeon said that this is normal and that these sensations are the nerves healing. He suggested that I wear tight sleeves so that the movement of fabric rubbing on my skin which contributes to the burning sensation is reduced while I heal

Other than that just a but of swelling this morning in my chest but nothing like it was

Now I wait for the MO to call with an appt.

once you meet with the MO what is the process before chemo?  Any tests or bloodwork?

    Have a good day all!!

yes that is what bugs me the most. Even with no clothing on that front arm pit area feels raw, chafed, irritated. Every day by late afternoon I don't think I can stand it anymore! I have used ice packs (over fabric) & that helps some. I am 3 weeks post bmx.

My DD brought me two genie bras last night - oh my goodness - so nice to  sleep in.  I have no butt as it was the first thing I lost when I lost 60 lbs a couple years ago lol - so I can pull it up over my hips to get into it.  I see my PS today and gonna see if I still have to wear a bra 24/7.  If so I am going back to get more genie's

football - what tests are ordered prior to chemo depend on whether your MO feels the need to do any scans - such as a CT or PET, and what chemo regimen is chosen.  Prior to Adriamycin or Herceptin, you usually have a MUGA or echo to check your cardiac function and get a baseline.  Both of these drugs are cardiotoxic so they need to know whether your heart is healthy prior to starting chemo. Also, if you are going to have a port, that procedure would need to be scheduled.  I would recommend doing that as early as possible because once you begin chemo you may have inhibited healing at that site.

For those with the numbness/burning thing - if you have had a number of nodes removed it will be quite a while until that sensation goes away.  For those with complete axillary dissection, it may be the better part of a year, and may not completely go away.  During the healing process you should find that the feeling slowly dissipates.

Hey Footballnut - btw I am a football fan big time too!  Have season tickets to the Tampa Bay Bucs!  I meet with my MO right before my BMX for the first time - was supposed to be after - but scheduling in his office messed up and booked me early.  He ran blood tests at that point - full range to get an idea of my overall health and I guess look at markers.  I see him Friday and hope to learn what his idea is for me then - that will be my first appt with him since the bmx and having the complete pathology on my BC - will let you know what happens at that appointment.

    Linda

that is how I put my Genie & the other little stretchy bras on.Step in, pull up LOL

I first bought one after my lumpectomy last Aug & promptly threw away all my other bras! Right now, 3 weeks post bmx, I am wearing camis & the No Boundaries bras from WalMart (cheap $5-6) They, like the genie, have the open slit on the side to remove the thin foam liner, & I can actually insert the light weight fiberfill foobs into them.

Sesrn,  looks like we are in the same boat.  Right mastectomy with augmentation to the left.  I am 9 days post surgery.  Augmentation will be done at the time of exchange, so still a long row to hoe.  Wish you the very best on the beginning of your journey.  The anticipation can be difficult and as much as I didn't want to do any of it, it was 2 months from dx to surgery so I was ready to get it over with.  The ladies on this board are a wealth of knowledge and are so helpful and honest.  I was lucky to find them, and I'm sure you will find the same too!

linda505 glad to hear that you like football too!!  As I live in mississauga Ontario we have no nfl team. The closest are the buffalo bills and I gave up on them after they treated Doug flutie so poorly. My boy is PEYTON manning followed by Drew Brees. The saints will be playing near us this season in Cleveland and Detroit so I hope to get to those games. The broncos will be playing the bills in Denver this year as well so that would be nice to go to seeing as my hubby is still a bills fan!  Poor thing!!  Lol

As far as the burning, sunburn pain, my doctor prescribed me Neurontin. I only took it for about 7 days post op along with my percocet. I thought that I didn't need it anymore once the worst was over. The past 5 days, I have been going crazy with that horrible nerve pain/ clothing rubbing on skin/tissue expander feeling like sandpaper. 2 nights ago, I realized that that is why my PS prescribed Neurontin. I started taking it again (300mg 3x daily) and I feel SO much better. I was so excited that I realized this and started it up again.

Hello Friends! Went to my PS on Tuesday hoping to get my first fill since surgery (she put in 350cc at time of surgery cause she wanted me to "wake up with a breast") but she said my breast is "still too beat up" and needs to heal for at least a few months.  I thought it was looking good but to her it's still too tight, mildly red and indurated.  So, my plan is to go back to work starting April 16th.  I work 3 days/week as a PT in an acute care setting.  A little nervous about lifting/transferring patients but I've been off 6 weeks and hopefully will be fine.  Once I've accrued some more time off from work, I plan to take the month of November off to finish my reconstruction.  With the last week of that spent resting/healing oceanfront on the Outer Banks of NC!  We go there every other year for Thanksgiving.  One thing I was disappointed to hear is that my PS said that I will have a drain again with my exchange surgery.  But hopefully not for 3 weeks again.

Not such a good visit with the PS today - I have a bad area about the size of a quarter on my left breast that isn't healing well - just about where my nipple used to be.   For now he is watching it - hopefully it will resolve and heal itself - he knows there is dead skin there but not sure how deep it goes.  He prescribed an antibiotic ointment and told me to alternate using that and aquaphor every other day.  I go back to see him on the 14th and therefore still have stitches in both breast.  My right breast looks good but he did remove some  fluid from each breast - not from the expander but from around the expander.  If the left doesn't resolved itself then he will have to trim away the dead skin and suture it but said it would be an in his office procedure.

Franny, 350 cc during surgery is alot!

I'm having a good day so far :-)  Today I had my first fill!  I had 200 cc put in on each side during surgery and today she added 100 cc on each side.  I still have funny flat spots where the incisions are and where my nipples used to be but I'm very happy.  I return to work FT Monday and I'll actually look nearly the same as prematectomies (except for the damn 5 pounds I gained from all the comfort food I ate.)  Also, I asked her about all the scabbiness I had along my incisions.  She said they were there because of all the dermabond glue that is on there still.  She said I could peel it off wherever I saw it was lifting off the skin.  So I did that when I got home and all the scabs peeled right off with it revealing nice thin incisions underneath.  I peeled a lot of it off.  Whew!  I was worried about my bumpy scabby incisions.  Here is a picture of my profile at 300 cc.  You can see my flat area where my nipple would be.  There is a point at the bottom of it and it looks similar on both.  Maybe in a fill or 2, it will become more rounded.  My next fill is in 12 days.  She said after the last fill, she waits 3 months.  Yikes that's a long time.  My Onc commented that my PS is "a perfectionist, almost anal."  I like that!
