Starting Chemo in March 2014

Great advice, especially dealing with one phase at a time. Makes it more manageable. Thanks!

I'm on my second cycle of TC. The third day after the infusion is when the symptoms started for me. First time I had severe bone pain in my legs. Had to use narcotics for pain, but it subsided after two days. I have some abdominal cramps, too, and everything tastes a little chalky. Also, extremely dry mouth, and little "zings" like pins and needles all over. I found that after days 4,5,and 6 things were continually uphill. I had some bad luck with a head cold and inflamed gum area, but hoping to avoid these during this cycle. I have not had nausea, but hopefully they gave you RX for that?
-
It seems unfair to menstruate during chemo. I am flipping 55 yrs old and got a period during the third week of my first cycle. Bummer!
-
mjhjahn - script for nausea yes. Tylenol good w bones as well. Was trying to convince myself the zings were all bc I was cold. Thank You!!!!!
-
Another update - day 4 of round 2. I called the OM for some new meds and they called in a scrip for stemetil. Wife took some yesterday (Monday) around 4 pm. She was up and about after about an hour, then back to bed. She slept for a few hours, which is good (she tells me) because half the time she is just lying there unable to sleep or do eff all. She seemed to be improving later in the night, and able to chat with the kids. Snow day today, so we let the kids stay up and watch Captain America. LOL wife could use one of them injections he got.
Wife has slept well. Woke up this AM around 6, but had good sleep hours again, she says. Feels better. Less nausea. She rubbed my back. Felt great. I rubbed hers too. Hoping she may have turned a corner. Says she won't take another stemetil unless she has to. Our young daughter just popped into bed with us. My boys are fighting over a blanket because I have the heat turned down. Kids are off as school is closed, so it sort of feels nice to have everyone around.
When wife is better it just feels right. Kids know it, and you know I have to know it.
Stemetil seems to have taken the edge off the nausea. Here is hoping. Wife felt good this time in last treatment, and then was up and down after that with pain from neulasta. We shall see.

My heart is aching for you. This is just too much. Speedy recovery from the tooth issue….. you are enduring way more than you deserve

MJHJAN2014 - a side affect of Neupogen is men's trial bleeding. Did you happen to get that injection?
http://www.drugs.com/sfx/neupogen-side-effects.html
My MO held off giving me the shot first round but wants to do it second round. I had such bad lower GI issues first round (lots of pain and difficulty with BMs) that I read the line about that in the side effects list and was like no way.
I also have had menstrual bleeding since March 20. It increased over the past few days so I guess now that my body has entered the pre-ovulatory phase and is starting to build the lining that my endometrium hasn't completely healed from my period. It is light but annoying. My MO's nurse had do suggestions except to say that my periods would probably go away for good soon enough -- not what I want to hear and not helpful. I'm going to see if my Chinese medicine doc can help with herbs and acupuncture on Thursday.
-
Jen - good for you keeping up with the exercise. I "trained" for chemo, starting when I got my diagnosis in February doing 1-2 mile walks almost every day with hand weights. With my port placement surgery followed right on the next day with my TCHP and s/e I didn't have much energy. Yesterday on day 13 I got up and did my loop again -- the nice weather sure helped too. I'm hoping to keep up the daily exercise until I get knocked down again.
-
agness, we can be virtual walking buddies!
I finally stopped bleeding from the period I got after my first treatment. ... 10 days!
I feel so much better now with regard to my surgery that I feel stronger going into round 2 of AC. Here's hoping that makes a difference.
My new motto: nap when you can!
-
WifeWBC, I'm glad that she is feeling better! YAY!
I got my molar pulled yesterday. No knocking me out; no stitches. Gruesome. Picture someone with "pliers" pulling at your tooth, and you rising up out of the chair while he's doing it. Was difficult with a lot of "cracking" noise. Finally came out...had three roots and one was at a weird angle. Feel like $*@() and my onc might still do round 2 on Thursday. Worried about this and infection from tooth getting worse with steroids..not supposed to sneeze, cough, the Claritin will make me do that. I would have felt 100% this week. :-( Home health care nurse coming to try to unclog picc line tomorrow. Really, can I have something else? Plugging along.....I hope everyone has a pretty good day today! It's finally warming up here; can't wait to feel good enough to go for a walk! I envy all you runners; I've never been able to do that....
-
I am not receiving any of the WBC rescue drugs. Prior to diagnosis, I had not achieved menopause. I was hoping chemo would shut down my ovaries, which it will, in time.

Hello everyone, just checking in day 13 after infusion #1, head itchy as, hair coming out all over my body! Have to vacuum again as i'm leaving a trail around the house, think I will be getting my daughter to shave it off tomorrow. Washing my wig today in preparation!
Other than that feeling fine, tastebuds have come back a bit, and no other SE apart from the departing hair... hoping #2 infusion next week goes well?
Sending good wishes to all of you out there who are starting first treatments soon, or are under way. Hoping all the SE are under control.
xx Jo

Had my 2nd infusion yesterday and got my Neulasta shot today. So far, feeling pretty good. The 4th and 5th days were the hardest for me last time so I'm expecting the same again. Nothing tastes good still which makes it hard to eat. My mother in law flew in yesterday to help this week, which is a big relief. Hope everyone is doing better!
-
HI, JoTro and Sinsin. So far so good for you! One thing that didn't happen to me that I noticed was I didn't lose any taste sensation with infusion 1 but I did get thrush and a rotten tooth. My hair loss was on the same schedule....got it shaved on day 13 and now the little bristles on top are falling off..I know what you mean! Sinsin, good for you to have some help, I hope it provides a big relief. Have a good night!
-
This is day 18 since my first round, hair shedding everywhere, I cut it really short, have a wig that is ok, might look for a better one this weekend. I'm not having any side effects now. Go to the Dr tomorrow, get my next round of chemo on Friday, I'm going every 3 weeks.
jmg, Im so sorry about everything you're going through. Hopefully now that the tooth is out, things will start to improve for you.
wifeWBC, hope your wife continues to feel better. I had nausea but it was pretty mild. When I was getting my chemo we got talking to the nurse and it came up that my husband and I were boaters for a number of years and she told me I may have less nausea if I never got sea sick. So I guess the fact that your wife is prone to motion sickness makes sense. Sounds like there must be something to that.
Xrayalli, I go to the PA tomorrow, I'm going to ask for a diagnostic mam and ultrasound, I think the dimpling in my right breast (left is the one with BC) is more noticeable and I'm very uneasy about it. I hope she agrees with me, I just don't think that MRI is telling the whole story.
I hope all you March chemo girls have an easy April, and may we all get used to our bald heads. Anybody losing eyelashes and brows yet?
-
My wife noticed her hair starting to shed Monday. That is 14 days from infusion #1. She has #2 infusion tomorrow and is scheduled to have the next 2 infusions at 14 day intervals. Her blood test today showed her WBC a little above normal. She has worked 11 full days and has really done quite well. She is a little more tired than usual but she says she is not too tired to work.
Best wishes to everyone.
-
My hair started to go today...day 14 since first infusion, next infusion tomorrow.
-
I'm 16 days out from my initial infusion and my hair is like a shedding Christmas tree. Really gross. My leg fell asleep on me three times last night in my sleep. Has anyone else has such an experience? Kinda freaky.
-
A hard "rite of passage" for all of us. Surreal. Side effects of treatment for this stupid disease now publicly visible.
-
Sounds like nerves misbehaving as side effect of Taxol. My MO checks on this. make sure and report to MO.
-
Oh, I see you haven't even had the Taxol….. maybe the other agents are causing?
-
Thanks for the welcome. It's taken me a while to get back as shortly after I made my first post husband spiked a temp and next 5 days were spent in local hospital. Trying to sleep in a bedside chair is no fun, but nothing compared to what my husband and all of you deal with. Scary to see how tanked the WBC's and other lab values can be. My husband doesn't seem to feel any stigma to having 'breast cancer', but I do think the rarity of it made it seem almost unreal for a period of time. He is feeling so much better after all the IV abx although now I will worry about it happening all over again after TX #2. The only infection found was in the fluid in his drain tube-holy cow-over a month now and still tons of fluid coming thru. We say better thru the tube than arm swelling, but I know it is a real pain in his side (figuratively and literally). Will be spending the next few days catching up. Good wishes to all.

Hi everyone! This is only my second post on here. I'm am 15 days past my first infusion. Yes my hair started coming out on day 13 and I cut it really short for now. It won't be long before it is all gone. An update on what I 've been going through for the past 2 weeks, day 3 after infusion I crashed. I had blood in my urine so I went to the Dr. and thought I had a urinary tract infection, so I started Cipro. Things only got worse! I had abdominal cramping and diarrhea and was so sick. I also developed a rash on my chest. After 4 days of taking this medicine I decided I must be allergic to it! I called the Dr. and they said yes do not take it anymore. So after I stopped taking it I slowly began to feel better. The only issues I'm still having is abdominal cramping and everything I eat goes straight through. I've tried to eat different things but it all does the same. I try to drink at least 1 ensure a day to get my proteins. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions? On a good note I was able to work most days except for maybe three. So that was good. I go for my second infusion next Wednesday so we'll see how that goes.
-
Sinsin, my left arm falls asleep every single time I lie down...if I move it, it comes back, but it falls asleep ever since I was diagnosed. It's crazy. My second infusion is tomorrow; went for fluids today. So far I have literally had 15 bags of fluid to keep my heart rate down, BP up, and me strong. I feel like my body is so darn weak I won't make this...some have said the second infusion was easier, so I hope so. If another tooth problem doesn't come up, I'll do it.
I do have one SE to ask you all about. I know our skin changes, but it has been remarked already after just 1 infusion that I am very yellow. I hope that onc is checking liver levels. This weekend when I was being hydrated and receiving abx for tooth, my blood sugar level at 4 a.m. draw was WAY high. Dr. had no idea why so I gave a copy to the nurse to give to onc today.
Denise: I can relate. I also cannot take Cipro or Flagyl...the poison me worse than the chemo and in fact, if I had to guess, the very LONG (like 1 1/2 months) I had to be on them after my diverticulitis is what screwed up my nervous system in the first place. They are really strong awful antibiotics, although they work. As for things to eat, I'm not sure, but I would try watermelon (cut it up yourself, do not buy it cut up), Greek yogurt, lots of thick soup (I like the squash) and things that are a little less fiber for the moment like white pasta, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots. Ask you doctor if you can take immodium, you should be able to, I would think.
Good luck to everyone this week. I cannot say I am looking forward to tomorrow, but it is one more down. It is the week and half after I am dreading!
Re hair: when I got my head buzzed the second time (the shave), they recommended I use a stay on cream rinse/conditioner to help with my scalp. This was by the person who cut it whose mother was just finishing chemo and used it on her. They ended up selling me a sort of spray on conditioner, but I haven't used it yet.
-
I had my 2nd infusion Monday and by Thursday of last infusion I was in Hell. So far today, though certainly far from great and still weak, I am feeling somewhat better than I did with my first. I have a headache and my heart feels like it is pounding right now. Hopefully that will go away soon. I only hope this gets easier as it goes on but I doubt it.
-
Hope everyone is faring alright and hanging in there!
-
Hi all, I went to see the CNP yesterday, she has ordered a diagnostic mam and U/S per my request. The dimpling to me is getting more pronounced on my "good" breast". She seemed to think if there were anything it would have shown up on the MRI or CT but agreed to do it for my piece of mine. The radiologist will be there on Tuesday so I should get my results that day.
Washed my hair this morning and almost all of it fell out, laying in a wet pile in the bottom of the shower. It was pretty gross. I got out my clippers and buzzed it off and put a hat on for work. And so it goes. They initially told me 3 weeks and it was 20 days so they had that right.
Tomorrow is chemo #2 for me, i'm using frozen peas for my hands and feet. Got my steroids and colace on board, ready to go.
Sinsin, hope you feel better soon.
jmg, so sorry about everything, I hope things are improving, especially your tooth. I consider myself to be pretty tough but not with my teeth, then I'm a big baby, sounds like you've been through hell and back.
Oddducklady, hope your DH is doing better, and the drain thing clears up soon.
Denise, you too, hope your D clears up soon.
And the rest of you, good luck with your treatments, you make me so thankful I am postmenopausal… I would hate to have to go thru that too… jeeze…not fair.
Good night ladies, and men… hope you all have SE sweet dreams

This is how I spent my morning! Not sure yet how I really feel.... been crying off and on, but such is life for us right now.
-
Genny5775 - have they mentioned vitamin b-6 for neuropathy? My MO said to start it (100mg 2x a day) the week before I start Taxol.
-
Just got caught up on everyone. Odducklady-hoping hubby is feeling better, you too, JMG. Genny5775- let me know how your results turn out, hoping everything is negative. To everyone who's hair is falling out. I'm am having a hard time with it. I just had my 4th weekly Taxol yesterday, hair started falling out a week ago today, so right on schedule. Today is coming out in clumps but I have so much of it everyone tells me they can't tell. It is so messy, though, that I think it may be time to cut it down to about an inch and start wearing my wig, which comes today. I am obsessed with pulling it out, too. Is anyone doing this? Almost all my bangs are gone and takes me forever to style it because it keeps falling out. It's a never ending battle. Sigh.
