Lovely Photos!!
We don't get that many hummers to our feeder. How often should I change the sugar water?
-
I don't put much out, only about a cup so I wait until they drink it up unless it is a hot summer sticky couple of days that breed mold..
-
Thank You!!
-
guess who was waiting for me this morning

"O.K. WHERE'S MY DINNER??? I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR HOURS!!!"

I just bought a new hummingbird feeder. The hummers are just getting used to it. It seems to be deterring the bigger birds that have been" stealing" from the other one.
-
I did a doubletake going out to mailbox today. Four hovering bodies over wildflowers. They were moths of some kind but almost hummer size. Not afraid of me at all. I didn't think moths came out much during the day (about 2 pm).
I need to fill feeders. Hummer has been buzzing one on front porch. There are plenty of wildflowers and fruit trees blooming so I don't really feel compelled yet. Somewhere I have a tiny single feeder I bought at Lowes a while back. What kind did you buy Lisa? Mine are under the porch eaves so bigger birds don't get in there.

luvmygoats - were they hummingbird moths? I think there's about 125 different species of them in the U.S. They're somewhat smaller than an actual hummer, but sure look like them as they hover over flowers - especially with their buzzing wings!
-
I've seen giant moths on an old nicotiana plant that has since died but only after dark. I thought most moths rested during the day; that's what surprised me. They also had a nasty attitude; drove off a sweet tiny butterfly from the weeds they were feeding on. And yes I'm sure that's what they were having since googled images of Texas critters. Ole' eyes want to deceive me - I've been spending wayyyy too much time watching Phoebe. I saw the biggest moth beautiful black and white on the water co office several years ago.
-
Now why didn't my picture post above?
O.K. One more time...
-
Dang... having trouble getting pics to post... hummingbird moth!

Saw this on Pinterest and thought of SoCalLisa...

awww so cute, thank you

Great pictures. Luv, hummingbird moths are out during the day. They love butterfly bushes. We get some rather large ones.
I envy you your hummers. They haven't made it here yet. I've got a few weeks to go!

As I write, a hummingbird is getting his fill at our feeder. A hooded oriole just tried it.
