Hey Gramof2boys
Good luck! I got the bandages off & the drains out yesterday! (March 13 surgery) All looked good. But I just had BMX no recon started.
I am getting bored too but am still weak. Get so wiped out just getting myself dressed. Dr said I can drive when up to it but I will wait a couple more days. (snowed again this a.m.)

Wow Julie, great news, congrats!

Wow Julie, great news, congrats!

Hi Blueberry
hope you're feeling a bit better today. So many ups and downs, small steps forward.
I had the two drains removed yesterday, such a weird semi painful feeling, oooh. My BMX was just a week ago. Dr is happy with everything. I chose no recon at this time because of being so wiped out from chemo just needeing to get my head together. My ps wouldn't do TEs because of possible upcoming radiation issues so my choice would be a dorsi flap, at a later date. Maybe. or not.
-
Sandra...the press n seal also works to cover whatever bandages you come home with after bmx and can't take a shower. Makes taking a sponge bath or "canary flutter" as my dad calls it a little easier. We just wrapped it around the ace Bandage covering the incisions and drain sites. You can at least be a little more liberal with the water and not worry so much. Also, pin the drain to the ace bandage before you wrap and cover them too!!!

I'm sorry that some of you are really struggling with infections and skin viability issues.
I still have dark pink areas I am keeping an eye on but they are staying the same. I'm 10 days out with 2 drains left. I'm hoping to get rid of at least 1 drain tomorrow. It's my plastic surgeon's nurse who takes out drains and will see you about incision concerns, etc. I like her. I'm asking her to see me tomorrow to check my pink areas. My mom is leaving Saturday but my 19 and 21 year old sons will be here at least. I swear my chest feels like they have 200cc boulders sitting on them! I'm assuming this pain is from the expanders and if so, I know now why people complain about them so much! I'm getting kind of tired of pain and doing everything in slow motion. I stopped taking codeine and valium a couple of days ago and I'm getting by with extra strength tylenol.
Unlike others, I am allowed to take showers with my drains (starting 48 hours after surgery). I also don't have dressings on my incisions and was told I don't have to wear a compression bra if it makes me feel uncomfortable. Doctors are so different. For the last couple of days, I've just worn a very soft cotton tank top with no bra. I need to read about the bra vs no bra thing.
Congrats I wannaseeyoubebrave! I also got a clear path report and it feels great!
I was able to get the Oncotype DX test ordered which made me happy. The "Breast Care Coordinator" told me the only indication she could see for me benefiting from chemo would be my age (46) but I would for sure be put on Tamoxifen. I meet an oncologist 4/1, my PS for my first fill, 4/3, then go back to work 4/7.
I'm wishing you all good healing!

In the pink bus. You guys are doing so great! I feel proud of you all, actually.
I am having a hard time bouncing back from this surgery -- 3rd one in three months. I'm really tired. Back to work after a week. Scared of reinfection. The hospital scared me this time with their infection precautions. I know it is procedure, but I didn't consider myself still infected. The nurse said many people don't get on top of one of the infections I had. So here I am, two weeks after sx, sitting here scared.
Thinking of all of you. You are all rock stars!

hello all. 3 days after surgery. I feel a bit tired today but my wonderful hubby of 30 tsars was snoring logs last night so suspect that this is the cause. Might take a nap at some point. I washed bad shaved my legs this morning which felt great!! My hubby washed my arms. Tonight he will wash my hair which will be GREAT!! I am getting tingles in the back if my left arm above my elbow and also have numbness and tingling on the left side of my left leg. Other than that I've continued with my exercises and actually "walked the wall" with my left arm thus morning. Still haven't had to take any pain meds which I'm thankful for. The right side where the implant was looks funny since this skin is sagging. I hope that this tightens up at some point since I do not want any more surgeries. I hope that everyone has a nice day!!
-
today makes 2 weeks since my r mx. i really hope to get my drain out today. it's hardly putting anything out but air bubbles anymore. and it drives me crazy. i call it my tail (my tail under the arm, ha ha). i guess i'll hold my breath when they pull it so it won't hurt so much. i am also getting nauseated by the rotten cinnamon-like smell mixed with the "medical" smell, of the adhesive they used for the steri-strips after they pulled out the staples on monday.although it's a weird, numb and itchy feeling, and the extra flaps of skin bug me, i feel freer without a breast. i wish i could have done both breasts at once, but the surgeon said the medicaid had to be finalized (meaning i needed the official card, etc) before that can be done. i should have realized something was wrong when my breasts grew from a C or D to an H or more, even though the rest of me didn't gain much weight over the last few years. but my mammos were all okay, except for alot of densities, which may be why this wasn't found sooner. i'll bet when they remove the other breast, they will find cancer too.
-
Scary-don't hold your breath when they remove the drains, BREATHE through it. Long inhale, Long exhale, repeat. Focus on your breathing. It will help if it is uncomfortable.
I hope you all get your drains out soon. That was the worst for me. I felt so free after they were gone.
And Cheers Julie and others for a clean path!!
-
I believe that I said it previously, but it bears repeating, if you think you will be having a drain(s) removed - particularly from the axilla - take either an Ativan, Xanax, or pain med in advance.
-
Linda505, drains are a pain in every sense of the word aren't they? I know you will be glad to get them out. It's normal to have one that puts out more. $60 co-pay is terribly expensive! Other than it being awkward to change the bandages yourself, you can surely do it. Frankly, I haven't had the best of luck with home health nurses.
So glad to hear most of you are progressing well and several have gotten great path reports. Julie, will your oncologist recommend chemo? I know sometimes the invasive part of IDC is so small that you can avoid chemo. It will be fine, no matter how it turns out. Iwanna, taking a walk and seeing tulips sounds so refreshing and uplifting. Good for the soul. I didn't get a fill until 3 weeks post op but I was recovering from an infection so it might be that most people start earlier. Just make sure the fills are slow and easy so you can minimize discomfort. Gramof2, how's the swelling today? Everybody has it in varying degrees after surgery and can take weeks to finally disappear. Fayth, how's that nerve pain in your arm? I've read of so many lately who had the same thing.
Wynne50, I live in the Thousand Oaks/Nacogdoches area. Maybe we can get together after our surgeries. Blueberry, I have the pain tolerance of an elephant so I didn't feel a thing when any of my drains were taken out. We are all so different. I suspect pain has a lot has to do with the skin being sensitive near the incision. My drains were not in the axilla, so maybe that's why some report pain more than others. I hope you are feeling better and aren't still beating yourself up trying to figure out what you did wrong. NOTHING. When the breast surgeon does the mastectomy and takes a lot of the fat below the skin, the flap of skin left is thinner and doesn't have the best blood flow. The plastic surgeon does the best he can with what the breast surgeon left for him to work with. When I went into surgery, it was with the understanding that the PS might not be able to the procedure we had planned (permanent implants) if either flap was too thin. One side WAS thin but he thought it was good enough...unfortunately the infection started in that side after surgery was over. It wasn't my fault. It wasn't either of the doctor's fault. It was the unnamed person in the OR who gave me the staph infection and the luck of the draw that it was in a place with thin skin. As they say, *hit happens.
Mnmbeck, anxiety is your nemesis, isn't it? It's completely understandable, especially since your mother died so young. The pain you've experienced is NOT FAIR. We're going to keep positive thoughts that your exchange surgery will be perfect and that your TE pain goes away.
-
my home care nurse just left. She is so wonderful!! I am thankful to have her. Looks like my remaining 2 drains might be removed this Saturday. I might take perc or Ativan before she comes to calm my nerves. When she removed the one kn the right side it wasn't too bad but I get so nervous. Ativan or a perc? My staples might come out Monday. Can't wait! So far no swelling and everything is healing fine!! Wish the best to everyone!!

Calling for all to board the Pink Bus tomorrow.
GabriellaM is having a BMX and Lat Dorsi Flap reconstruction. Good luck to you Gabriella. Tomorrow is also my big day. I'm having my fourth surgery in 7 months. The infection I had after the first surgery caused a bunch of problems, so my PS is doing more repairs, this time to the left pocket and Z-plasties on the three damaged muscles to try to lengthen them. I had wanted fat grafting too, but don't expect to wake up with any since the PS is reluctant to do too much to too many areas. <sigh> Sure do wish this was the last surgery but I think there will be one more.
I'll be printing out some of those "Have You Washed Your Hands" signs I posted here a few weeks ago and buy a large bottle of hand sanitizer. Both will sit on the bedside table in plain view of everyone who comes in my room. No more infections for me if I can possibly help it.
I went to the hospital this morning to get my PICC line put in. The nurse who did it is the best one I've had yet. There was very little pain with the lidocaine stick and then blessed numbness while they did the procedure. My arm is a little sore now, but that's good preparation for tomorrow when I'll be dealing with some real "discomfort." I'm excited about having Exparel injected into the incisions at the end of surgery and am looking forward to finding out if it really does minimize pain for 72 hours. That would be a blessing since I can't take anything except Tylenol. Also hoping things go smoothly with the anesthesia and I don't give them too much trouble. Since I'm allergic to many of the drugs they routinely use in surgeries, I usually have one or two episodes of bradycardia while I'm under. Fingers crossed I don't have much post op nausea & vomiting. Yes, I will be taking an Emend tablet & getting a scopolamine patch before the OR, and Zofran while I'm under and during my hospital stay. That worked pretty good last time - only had a few hours of nausea. I'll let you know how it goes.
Come on...climb in my pocket and keep an eye out for anything that could go wrong tomorrow. Thanks.
-
Grabriella & Sandra, all the best to both of you tomorrow!
We will be there for you!!!!
-
all the best to all who have their surgical turn!! The pink bus really helped me get through it! I'll be thinking of all if you!!
-
thinking of GabriellaM and sandra 4611 for tomorrow - hope you surgeries go great and your recovery is fast. The hospital got it squared away with my insurance so I will not have a copay for these nurse visits - first one will be here at 330 today. I really want to see what is going on on the right side. Left side feels great - no pain but right side is not so great and I am concerned that there may be a little infection or something - I did run a slight fever 100.2 for a bit but that went away quickly.
-
Sandra ...all in for you girl!!!
You and I are sisters in the gen anesthesia/pain med issues!! I did have the Exparel!!! Totally worth it!!! I'm noT sure how people like you and I would get through without it!!!
Thank you for he reminder to ask dor it again when he goes in on Friday for my clean up!!!
Prayers and big hugs today !!!
-
I will be ready to join the bus for Gabriella and Sandra tomorrow. Still not up an running but I can sit in your pocket as well as the recliner.
Best of luck to you both.
Sandra hopefully nausea and pain will not invade your territory tomorrow.
HUGS to you both and all you sisters recovering from your procedures.
For those still waiting we are with you in spirit as you wait.
-
I'm with Jeannine. I will be on the bus but definitely not up and running. Surgery was on Monday and I am still pretty sore but getting better every day. Hope everyone is doing well.
-
Hopping on the bus for Gabriella and Sandra tomorrow! I'll be in your pockets making sure those anesthesiologists make you feel most comfortable!
Several conversations going on about drains. I had a plan to prepare myself for when my dear doctor would remove them. She surprised me during my last sick visit to the hospital. She said, ok, let's get rid of these things! I looked up at my husband scared to death...it wasn't part of the plan! LOL! I must say that it wasn't painful, just more uncomfortable. Breathing helps. My dear hubby's eyes were popping out of his head. He couldn't believe how much tubing was actually in there. I think that was the highlight of his day. ;-)
One more topic, uncomfortable one, to bring up. I've cut back on my pain meds but at the same time cut back on my daily mirolax. Bad idea. Stay on top of your colons ladies! You'll be glad you did. I had a very rough day in that category today that I do not plan on replaying. I know, maybe too much information but I'm only sharing because I love you all. :-)
Gentle hugs to all of you. Wishing you a relaxing eveninGabriella and Sandra !
-
sandra4611. Good luck tomorrow.
Can someone tell me what the pink bus is and climb in my pocket?
-
I'll be on the Bus!
Good luck to Gabriella and Sandra tomorrow. Kick butt!
Juliecc - My BS was telling me that my age, also 46, is one of the reasons they are thinking chemo. My mom was 36 so I wasn't feeling that young. Not exactly sure of how age plays a part except that there would be many years left for a stray cell to grow. Do you know anymore about that?
VintageGal- So happy to hear your good news on the path results! Do you have to go into Boston for the Herception infusions? How often? I am already sick of the drive in but if I have to go get chemo I will try to make the visit in fun somehow.
Scary- I smell something too!!! It is seriously driving me out of my mind and I am driving my husband out of his. I smell burnt, sweet, chemicals!!! I don't know if it is coming out of my skin or If I had tubes up my nose and something is still there or what. I can't stand it!!
SpecialK- Your so on top of everything! Sorry you have to be going through more @#$%.
iwannaseeyou- your drain story is the same as mine! My husband thought it was so cool. They told me to breath in and I was waiting for her to say breath out but instead she said, "It's out". Wonder why it is so different for everyone.
I want you all to know that I read your posts every night and look forward to hearing what you are all up to. I wish I could keep up with and respond to all of your posts. Also, sometimes if I am having a pity party (usually in the middle of the night) I think of all of you and hope that you are sleeping well and also know that there is probably someone up with me and I am not alone.
One more thing....MY ARMPITS ARE KILLING ME WITH THESE TE's and I can hardly move my stinking arms!!!!! So annoying especially with little ones who want hugs and cuddles.
-
Just checking in, had surgery on Wednesday. Got home about 2 today, Thursday. Was feeling good till just now. I think the pain meds just wore off so started on oxy just now. Propped up in bed watching TV.
Hope everyone else is pain free and recovering fast!!
-
I have had drains removed by a number of different doctors - my PS is very gentle and removes them carefully. They have a different philosophy in my BS office, the first four drains from BMX/TE surgery were removed in less than a week due to a raging allergic reaction. They needed the drains out so they could start me on oral steroids. I never drain much and have never had a drain longer than a week. In the BS office my drains were literally pulled, as in yanked. Hard. I was less than a week out from surgery and simultaneous port placement so I was still in some discomfort. Five weeks later had the ALND surgery and had the one axilla drain removed, also yanked in the BS office, but by a different person. That is why I think it is their modus operandi. Because there is so much nerve involvement with ALND it felt like I had been electrocuted briefly. It was the only time I made any noise in this whole lengthy process, I kept repeating OMG, OMG, OMG, and I may have said a bad word somewhere in there too! It took about an hour for the electrocution feeling to go away.
-
Wynne - the pink bus is our virtual bus all us patients jump on to escort and wait in the waiting area during surgery to protect our fellow sisters during their procedure.
In your pockets means you are as close to the patient as possible. Just imagine them in your shirt pocket as close to your chest as possible.
Any other explanations are welcome, this is my understanding.
-
Bless your heart SpecialK.
All doctors and their helpers sshould always be gentle in everything they do to us.
-
iwanna - you are sweet! It would be nice if that were always the way, but the good news is that these were momentary things!
-
vintagegal,
I am new to this thread. I was diagnosed in December and started chemo in January. After 4 tx my tumor size has not changed so I am stopping chemo to have surgery then will pick back up afterward with either the same regime if the path says it was working or new regime if it was not responding. I was wondering about your port replacement. I have a port in now but BS said it will have to be removed since it is on top of breast tissue. He thought I could do the last two rounds with an IV but I will be on herceptin through next January, so will have to have another port. Did you have any problems with them moving your port? Where did the put it ?Did they use the same one or put a new one in? Was it done at the same time as BMX? I am trying to get my head around surgery while trying to regain strength from last round of chemo.
-
Good luck tomorrow, Sandra and Gabriella. I will be in you pockets cheering you on. You can do it, you can do it...
My skin is looking slightly better today, yay, and I have stopped beating myself up, another yay. Thank you ladies for your encouragement and advice. I have upped the protein and feel all around better.
About drains, mine were yanked in the manner SpecialK described. The first drain I think was scabbed to my skin, so perhaps that was why it felt like it tore a hole in my side when it was yanked. The second was yanked as well, but I was ready and did the slow breath in, slow exhale, and it was much much easier. Definitely breathe. My experience was very different from what I had heard, but it was over so fast I laughed about it. Two more to go, hopefully next week.
About chemo, my BS said I should definitely have it due to age, 43, even though though the tumor was less than 2 cm, node negative, grade 2. My oncologist disagreed that it was a given conclusion and ran the oncotype. That came back high, so now we know I'll benefit from chemo. I keep trying to frame it as it benefiting me, because I really don't want to do it. But who does? Nobody. I am inspired by those of you sharing your experience with it. You help me feel strong.
About the smell some of you are experiencing, could it be caused by the drugs you are taking? Valium makes me taste metal and smell really strange smells. I mentioned it so much, my son,12, told me, "you smell a smell that smells smelly."
