Chloroquine to treat DCIS

Another DCIS sister sent me this link re interesting research being done with DCIS patients at George Mason U. A malarial drug is showing promise in stopping breast cancer before it
starts.

This looks like an interesting clinical trial.

I wondered what others thought about it?

I wouldn't take it due to having tinnitus (tinnitus is ringing/buzzing in the ears that you can't turn off and there's no cure for it).   Some of the people on the tinnitus support board I was on, either developed it after taking a quinolone drug or their existing tinnitus worsened.  And for some it was permanent. Just a caveat for people with hearing problems.

It's curious that this has come up again. I've been taking several medications that were meant for other things and chloriquine is one of them. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about why I'm still alive after almost 9 years with mets, 6 seriously advanced. I'm starting to think maybe these drugs, off-label,  may be the reason. I sure wish there was a way to be sure. Just thought I'd mention this drug in particular because I had no idea it had cancer-fighting properties until it was brought up in the thread below.

I inquired about this clinical trial and the results are really promising.  I ended up not doing it because I would almost certainly still have needed mastectomy and the travel wasn't worth it.  But they are doing good work there and they are still enroll ing patients in the trial.  I hope this will eventually lead to better treatment for DCIS!

I hope chloroquine can be of help. It brings memories of my Peace Corps days, more than 30 years ago, when we took it as an anti- malaria drug. I don't recall any bad se's but then again it was a long time ago.

I have to take chloroquine (anti-malarial) every year before going on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. That would be great to hear it works to prevent DCIS too!

I took this one for some time too. It is often prescribed for Rheumatoid Arthritis. I know it is said to have  very few se's, but I think I gave it up because it made me dizzy.
