experience with cheap wigs or ebay?
I've read a few posts about women liking the "cheap" wigs they bought on the internet over some of the more pricier ones they got at salons. Does anyone have any experience with this or websites to recommend? How about the really inexpensive ones on ebay? Or some of the human hair ones on ebay that are a fraction of the price the salons here sell them for? I'm really on the fence about rocking a wig at all since it will be summer when I'm bald and super hot...I am hesitant to spend a bunch of money on a wig when I don't even know if I will wear one. My insurance covers up to $350 but I want to make sure I get the right one...thanks

I've had at least fifteen wigs and hated them all regardless of human or synthetic, except for these two. Neither has that wiggy helmet look because of the lace front, and neither have an exorbitant amount of hair. As for comfort....well, can't say because anything on my head drives me nuts, but I'm sure others would find them comfortable. They're both very light. They aren't the best, I'm sure, but they're certainly not the worst. More importantly, they pass as natural. The longer one though, didn't last very long. Something in the strands made it frizzy in the ends, but because of its length, I was able to trim the tips and have it last about 8 months. Even though it didn't last very long, I still ordered another because it really looked natural and was very versatile. You could easily pull it back, bangs included, and still have it look like your own hair. The links I'm providing are from a company I'm not too stoked about, but if you google the wig name, you can probably shop around for the best price.

ETA: I paid $1400.00 for a human hair wig that I thought would be the bomb. It sucked and it was donated within a week. It looked so fake for some reason that I still can't identify, (i think there was too much hair), so just to let you know, sometimes the price and the fact that it's human don't mean much. On the other hand, don't stick your head anywhere near a hot oven with a synthetic...they melt.

Wig brands are all so different. FWIW, I bought a gorgeous Louis Ferre hh wig in eBay (retail on it was $1700, I got it for $500 and in the color I wanted). I also bought a Tony of Beverly synthetic wig (the Bennett) for $390 at wigs-us. I think my sister had a Noriko for her first round of chemo. She mostly goes with caps now, but has a pretty hh wig for special occasions.
You might be best served if you can find a synthetic wig you like the look of on a site like wigs.com or wigwarehouse.com, then seeing if you can find a break on it on eBay. Whatever you do, just don't go out and pump big money into a custom piece because you might turn out to be a scarf or cap girl :-)

Thanks for the tips ladies, especially the one about hot ovens!!! Haha! Hope you didn't learn that one the hard way!

I also had the Premium by Eva gabor and loved it. i also got it from voguewigs.com. It did not look like a wig, and most people were shocked when k told them after they complimented my hair. If you go to that website to look for any wig, look in the reviews. A lot of people post pictures of themselves in the wigs. That will help you see what it will look like on someone other than a model.

As with many things, you get what you pay for. That doesn't mean that you won't like a cheap wig, but it's not a fair comparison to spend $20 on ebay vs. $500 on a brand name. If you've never worn a wig before, it may be worth buying a few cheap ones just to try it out. Then when you're ready, invest in something you'll feel great about wearing everyday. Or who knows, you may be one of those who are happy with a cheap wig!
You can find deals on ebay, but a lot of them are shipped from China and don't expect any customer service, not to mention returning it. There are plenty of other great sites, try http://abhair.com for wigs ~ $100, and http://www.discountwigsalon.com for cheap wigs under $20.

I am so happy I found this thread!!! I have had no problems handling the surgical part of this journey. However, the whole chemo thing...FREAKS ME OUT!!! There are 2 things I am most stressed over, being sick to my stomach and losing my hair!!!
I keep seeing the wigs in the little magazine that was included in some resources I received at our local Community Cancer Center. It seemed that every aspect of wigs that gave me anxiety was magnified. The links to the ones above have helped alleviate some of that anxiety.

Lakegirl, I'm the same....the surgeries weren't the biggest thing to get through for me, it was losing the hair! Shop for your wig as early as possible. I had mine purchased and ready before I started chemo, it gave me such a sense of relief knowing it was waiting for me. And what I did was pick out a style I always wanted but could never achieve with my own hair, it makes wearing it fun....and I have gotten dozens of compliments on my wig. People who don't know I was in treatment have no idea it's a wig.
My hair is growing back but still super short, and I have been thinking about getting a cheap wig for the summer that is shorter and lighter ( mine is hh and a little heavy) so thanks for the posts on this thread, I'm going to check out these sites.

Pamela...right before surgery in March I had 12 inches of my hair cut off...totally glad I did it!!! If not for this, I would never have the courage to do it!!! However, I stilll don't like the thought of losing my hair!

I bought several wigs from different companies. I bought really cheap, and one more expensive wig. The hardest thing for me about online wig shopping was choosing a color. Sometimes the color shown on my monitor didn't match the actual wig. For this reason, I prefer to shop at Paulayoung.com. They allow exchanges and refunds(except for shipping) Some companies do not allow any exchanges or refunds, so be very careful about their policies.
As for ebay, and the Chinese wigs...I ordered two. One was the wrong style and color, and I agreed to accept 1/2 of the purchase price as refund. It would have cost me too much in shipping to return it. I really like that wig, and it is very good quality. The second wig I have never received after over a month. I will have to open a complaint with ebay on that one.
I have a Revlon wig and a Jon Renau wig that I bought because the online reviews were so good. These have turned out to be favorites. I prefer wigs over scarves and hats.
If you do end up buying wigs, you should definitely purchase wig shampoo and conditioner. Use these products as directed, and your wigs will be beautiful and last longer.
I have had fun choosing different styles and colors. My husband has encouraged me to experiment and be playful with the wigs :-)

birdlady, your ebay experience is what I was talking about. Definitely check out the return policies anywhere you buy, but again, if you need to return the wig to Asia, there goes your savings.
And yes, colors are hard to match perfectly on your computer, even at the most expensive sites, that's why you need to check out the return policy. Of course, the more expensive sites usually have great return policies. I haven't actually ordered yet from http://www.discountwigsalon.com so I can't say for sure, but it looks like they have easy returns. Some of the other sites I've seen have "a money back guarantee" but if you read the actual policy, there's a long list of hoops you have to jump through.

I've bought some super-cheap wigs from ebay and amazon. They aren't bad, but they really look like wigs. OK in a crunch, though.
BUT, when I knew I was going to get chemo, I totally went out and blew a ton of bucks on a top-grade wig. It was my one bright spot in a lot of darkness. My own hair was thinning even before chemo, so having an excuse to go all out and get a really nice wig made me feel less worried about chemo. I was more worried about an awkward transition between having hair and wearing the wig, but my hair all fell out at once, so that was no problem. It's not always a joy wearing a wig (mine still slipped up a bit in the back), but a better wig can be slightly more comfortable, fit-wise and material wise (softer, not scratchy).
It is possible to get your doc. to write a prescription for a head prosthesis or whatever, and you can try and get insurance to pay... might not work, but it might.
I have to say that I get lots of compliments on my hair (wig). I actually have to tell people it's a wig! And I get the chance to look years younger with a thick head of long hair with the wig!
I know it's an indulgence, but for my year-long time with cancer so far, it's kind of important to indulge a little bit I think. Of course, if these sorts of things are not important, that's all good, too!
Anyway... with cheap wigs, maybe try and look for the kind that have the realistic scalp/parts at the top. That helps a wig look a lot more natural. I was lucky that I wore bangs, so I didn't have to worry about lace fronts and having a natural hairline. Most people really aren't looking hard at people's hair thinking they are wigs, so it really doesn't matter too much. And wigs are more commonly worn now without any big social stigma. Just go for whatever you think would work for you.
The stuff on ebay and amazon are pretty darn cheap overall... If you do spend money, it's probably better to go to a good wig shop and get fitted, so you don't waste lots of money, if that's possible. If you think you'll be wearing a wig a LOT it's also probably worth paying more for a better look and comfort/fit, too.
I bought the cheap stuff to maybe go to the gym and throw around. I try and take care of my expensive wig. But I really do prefer to ONLY wear my good wig...
