Tell me about your experience with Effexor!
I just started it a few days ago. I finally decided that I'm tired of being crabby and depressed and also tired of waking up at night with inferno flashes. I was prescribed 37.5 mg - just hoping this will be enough to do something, although I'm reading that therapeutic doses would be higher. I don't think I have any side effects - possibly a very slight headache, but that could be from my sinus' too. Still waiting too see if and how much it helps.
How about you?

I started taking effexor several months ago & it has been very effective in slowing down my hot flashes (which is why I got on it). I haven't really noticed any other effects but there might be some leveling of moodiness that I just haven't noticed. I started on 37.5 and then my doc said double it (which is pretty common from what I can tell).
One IMPORTANT thing that I have found out is that effexor has withdrawal symptoms that begin after even a day of missing a dose - I have experienced this and it is NOT pleasant. So make sure that you take it every day. When you go to actually stop the doc will prescribe a different med that will cover the withdrawal symptoms which you can then stop after I think a couple weeks & not have any symptoms.

I'm on 75 mg too. No side effects that I can tell. Helps a lot with the hot flashes. I love that it evens out my moods.
-
Love it! No se's at all. Am taking 75 mg which I worked up to after starting at 37.5.

I am a new member although I have been reading the message board since I was diagnosed in Sept. 2013. I want to post positive information but I feel I must write honest comments most importantly.
I have taken Effexor (pre-BC) during two different periods and found it very effective in treating my depression. However it is extremely difficult to go off of and you need to exercise extreme caution in this regard. Even as another member posted, you can see negative effects if you miss a dose. Please exercise extreme caution.

thank you CanAng - that's why I was afraid to take it. I'm hoping I can continue to feel relief at 37.5 mgs! It's helped with the hot flashes, and taken the edge off my irritability - wish it would help lift me up a bit more though. But I'm functional.
-
I've been using the 37.5 mg dose for two years. It's still controlling my hot flashes remarkably well.
-
Antienance, did you notice any effect on your moods at that dose?
-
SophiaMaria, no I really didn't. But I wasn't really having any problems at that time. I went through a brief period of depression right after completing chemo but I was over it before I started the effexor.
-
good for you!

Hi ladies. Hope you don't mind me jumping in. I started effexor this week for some mild depression. I finished treatment last May and was doing fine up until a couple of months ago. I saw my MO this week and told her how I've been feeling that the shoe will drop and they'll find a mets somewhere. It wasn't consuming me just always lingering at the back of my head. She started me on 37.5 and the only thing I noticed is I would wake up in the middle of the night. I was taking it before bed in case it made me really sleepy. Last night I decided I'll try taking it in the morning and seeing how that works. I had no idea it helped with hot flashes since mine were only at night and not all that bad but now that I'm reading about your experiences I realize that they haven't been too bad! Thanks for letting me tell my story.

Been on Effexor XR 150mg for years. Never thought about it causing me to wake up in the night. Maybe i should try taking it in the morning, will be interested to hear how that works for you Karen. Yes, missing a dose is horrible! My new insurance does not have effexor in its formulary, so i may be exploring other meds with my dr.
-
so it looks like taking it in the morning works for me. Wasn't loopy and slept good. No waking up.
-
I started Effexor XR 75mg about 6 days ago for hot flashes. It seems soon, but I think my hot flashes have reduced...one thing I have notice the last couple of days I am waking up 4-5 times a night to use the bathroom. Any one else?
-
Hi itsme203! Are you taking it at night or morning? I was taking it at night and was waking up so I switched to morning and am sleeping through the night now.
-
I'm happy to have found this thread. I think I'm going to ask my MO for an rx of Effexor. The hot flashes and night sweats have gotten to the point now (after about nine months) where I truly feel them affecting my quality of life and decreasing my overall health. I don't have insomnia, but the flashes and sweats cause sleep disruption all night long (I experience about four to six episodes per night). When I get up for the day, I already feel behind the eight ball. Throughout the day I cycle between hot flashes/sweating/freezing/shivering, all of which zap my energy level and make it hard to focus. I have little motivation to exercise, but I know I need to. The cumulative effect of all this is definitely making me feel depressed. I would love some hot flash relief and a bit of a mood stabilizer.
I'm also scared of effexor. I tried Zoloft ten years ago and had very strong side effects right away -- agitation, sort of a panicky feeling, horrible headache and jaw pain. I'm worried I might feel the same on effexor. Another poster here at BCO described those same symptoms. I won't know until I try, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I know it's not a magic bullet, but I feel like I need help to get me over this hurdle so I can begin to do what I need to do (get better sleep, exercise, lift my mood a bit). I want to reduce my weight by 10% (a realistic and doable goal), but I feel I'm incapable of doing so right now.
My MO suggested ativan for night sweats. I filled the rx and tried to split the tiny pill in half -- an exercise in futility! I decided not to bother. (I'm not a big fan of taking meds!!!). She said the next recommendation is gabepentin, but the side effects I've read about make it something I want nothing to do with. She said effexor is her third choice; I hope she will still prescribe it for me. I want the lowest dose (37.5 mg?) And I really hope I find the relief that I've read others have had!
One question -- I've read about the importance of weaning off when discontinuing. If I'm on the lowest dose, how does that work? The withdrawal sounds awful.
-
Karen, have you found that it has made a difference with your mood?
-
Gemini -good luck! My onc said at the lowest dose you don't need to worry so much about weaning off. I'd like to drop down to it but I feel so good now I'm loathe to stir the pot. I'll probably be switching to an AI this year but have decided not to research any SEs.
-
Gemini my MO said it takes 2-3 weeks to kick in but if you ask my 13 year old she'll tell you that it's already working!
-
thanks for the replies. My MO got right back to me after I emailed her and sent the rx in right away. I picked it up and will take my first dose at bedtime tonight. Fingers crossed that it will be helpful and won't involve the side effects that I felt while taking Zoloft ten years ago. Will post an update!

Argh! Barely 24 hours since I took the first effexor pill, I now feel pretty horrible. I have a headache that has developed into one of my full-blown migraines, I feel dizzy, have a horrible taste in my mouth, and feel "spacey" mentally. I know it would seem this is too soon, but this is very similar to how I felt on Zoloft after one day. I guess I'm just very sensitive to these types of serotonin inhibitors.
I realized after I took the pill last night that my MO recommended starting with half a pill ... I took the whole pill. It is the lowest dose, 37.5. I am not going to continue this medication. I doubt I'll have withdrawal this early, right? I'm loath to taken even a half a pill again.
I'm disappointed, but the headache and dizziness make hot flashes seem preferable! I might try it again in a few weeks, but I just want this out of my system and feeling my normal, headache-free self ... sweat and all.
-
Oh Gemini! That really stinks!!! Why is it always the lesser of two evils with this stuff??
-
I know, Lucy! I felt so crummy today that I feel like I got a new perspective on things, that I can live with the hot flashes. I just got out of a long tub -- that's my remedy when I'm not feeling well. Soaked for over an hour -- my fingers are prunes! The headache is going away, and I'm off to early bed as soon as I clean my kitchen. What a day! :-/

I started Effexor shortly after finishing chemo, initially for hot flashes. I am very sensitive to SSRIa and anxiety meds so I chose to start at 17.75 - half of the lowest dose. I discovered it took the edge off the crazy anxiety I had had since finishing chemo & so I stayed on it for a year. I upped it to 37.5 at one point and felt really, really good. Eventually I decided I wanted to be med-free so I chose to wean off - a two-month process of quartering doses and enduring some icky feelings. Even down to 9.375, withdrawal was hard. With that said, Effexor really is a great med and gave me the energy and peace to do some much-needed work on myself. I echo others' comments - make sure you take it religiously every day, & if you chose to quit ask for a "bridge" medication to get you through.
-
So I've been on it for about 7 weeks and the last two weeks I noticed I've been so tired I was actually getting concerned that something was wrong. Has anyone else felt this way?
-
are you just on a low dose? I've been on 37.5 for several months. I know I did go through a time when I crashed in the afternoons (not normal for me!), but I'm not sure if that was the effexor or not. If it was, it maybe lasted a couple of weeks - no problems now!
-
yes 37.5 one a day
-
hopefully you will just come out of it! You possibly could be fighting something too - at least around here there are more virus' going around now than this winter. Please post how you're doing in another week or so!
-
this thread convinced me to try effexor. I have peripheral neuropathy and have heard effexor helps. I too have been afraid to try it because of reported side effects but it seems like many here haven't had problems. Have to have thyroid checked once more to see if those meds need increased and then i am going to give this a try. Thank you for posting. So many useful threads on this site.

I'm thinking of dropping down from 75 to 37.5 but am afraid the dark clouds might come back. Anyone done ok dropping down?
-
When I was diagnosed three + years ago, over the course of several months, I tried several different antidepressant medications. Effexor, prozac, zoloft, Remeron. It was not a good experience for me. They increased my anxiety level so much that with one prescription, all I did was sit on the sofa trembling and could barely get a thing done other than staring and waiting for night to come so I could sleep. I told that to the nurse practitioner who was working with me to find the right meds. She said, "we call that 'flat'...the medicine made you flat."
I had been such a jumble of emotions upon my diagnosis that it took me several months to figure out what I was feeling and I realized I was not depressed; what I was feeling was great anxiety. I spoke to the np and she was able to prescribe Buspar, an anti-anxiety medicine only. It was a Godsend and it gave me my life back. I take a very mild dose every day and have been able to pack a lot of living in these past three + years because I can keep the anxiety in check.
So, my advice is, if the effexor doesn't help, continue to seek to find what works. So glad for those to whom it does help.
