What was your Vitamin D level when diagnosed?

Options

Mine was 27.  My MO said that was fine, but I don't agree.  It seems like a lot of us had low Vitamin D levels at diagnosis.

    when i had the bloodwork done, the doc told me 50 is the min for normal range.

    mine was 13.7....LOW 

    found out BC in Nov and the bloodwork was done back in Mar...in 2013. he told me to take vit D but i didn't listen to him.

    Mine was 7. Funny, it was not my MO that tested it but my allergist! Sometimes I think he is much more up on things.

    Mine was 12.  Only up to 18 after taking prescription dose for 8 wks.  I may need to move?

    Mine was 30 now 58 after several months of 6000 IU's.  I take liquid Vit D under the tongue.

    After 3 1/2 years of supplementing with 4000-5000 IUs per day plus a prescription for a year, mine was recently tested and was 52, only 15 points higher than when I was diagnosed.

    It seems that some of us have a hard time maintaining a good level, whether from the sun or supplements.

    I read that women who have had breast cancer should aim to get their levels between 60 - 80, much higher than what is recommended for the general population.  So she's giving me another prescription, but probably because I whined for it. She's kind of argumentative, LOL.

    Mine was pretty low as well but didn't have it tested right away at Dx. Its almost a given that optimum levels are understated worldwide but there's a growing recognition of the link between low levels and BC. It would be VERY interesting to know the figures on how many of those Dxd w BC and had low D3 (Cholercalciferol)  levels.

    Mine was 8. And i live in sunny CA and work outside every day! I do wear a lot of sunblock but was surprised it was that low! my doc says there is a link between Vitamin D deficiencies and breast cancer but they are not sure if it is the chicken or the egg. like do low D levels have a causal effect on breast cancer or does breast cancer have a causal effect on making low D levels.

    I was diagnosed with a level 15 two weeks before my May 2012 BC diagnosis (DCIS).   I was put on 50,000 units per week for 8 weeks.   I then had my D3 level tested 6 months later and it was up to 40.   That was over a year ago.  I take 1,000 units daily although with this winter being so harsh I have taken 2,000 some days.   All of my doctors (Onc, GP and neurologist told me it was important to stay on the D3).

    I was 18.  Have been take 50,000 IUs since the end of November and was just retested.  After all that I'm just up to 28.  So he has be on it for another 3 months and we'll check again.  Not sure how high he's aiming for though.  I'm going to have to do some reading.

    Mine was a 5!!!!  5!!!!  I began taking Vit D3 immediately - have taken it every day since (been 5 years since my diagnose) and it averages around 55.  It does take a while before you see it go up and I still take it.  I was taking 4,000 units per day, dropped to 2,000 units about 6 months ago on the advice of my primary care doc.  Having it retested on March 12th when I next see my onc and it it's dropped any, I'll go back to the 4,000 - if it hasn't I guess I'll stay with the 2,000 units.

    Mine was 27 and my doctor said he feels most people should aim for 75 providing the most benefit.

    mine was 11, but it was the beginning of February in the northeast.  Took the megadoses for a couple of months and it came up to 35, now take 5,000 mg per day, need to get it tested again

    Mine was 14. Take 5000 daily for 16 months. It is now up to 32..

    i want to add what my integrative doc told me, he said about 90% of BC patients have vit D deficiency. 

    just want to put it out there.

    I still don't know. I am the laziest BC patient on the face of the planet. My MO said I should request a vitamin D test from my PCP, and I still haven't gotten around to doing it (4 months now). But I am taking 2,000 IU in the morning and 2,000 IU at night.

    Probably best to disregard anyone telling us to get our "vitamin D" from direct sun exposure (" 15 minutes 3 times a week") - all the other "may helps" aren't much help either.

    One of the first studies of low Vitamin D in women came from a group of women doctors in SOUTHERN CA who saw this as such a frequent problem for their patients.

    For those with E+ bc, do check to make sure your supplements are in bran oil, NOT SOY OIL, for a start.

    I was 17 at diagnosis, now 68 by taking 7,000ius daily.  Also find liquid drops under tongue best for me.

    Why Sunflower?  Maybe I am missing something. As stated in the article ...

    Winter is a different story. I am south of the border mentioned, and still with near constant sun exposure during the winter cannot get my levels out of the 30's, so I am obviously not processing something correctly. I am going to get my levels checked during the peak of summer this year just out of curiousity. Maybe I need to switch brands up again and go for your liquid d.

    i was reading something my friend sent me. it says if you are taking vit D supplement and the level is not up, it might be liver disorder, blood pressure med and diuretics also interfere with vit D absorption

    summer - AND it depends upon where you live...in many places, the angle of the sun is not good for getting the "rays" you need.  To each her own, I definitely think it's important enough for me to be taking the highest quality supplements I can get.

    4 years before diagnosis, I was 25. My PCP thought I should be higher. I live in sunny California, but I had the test in February. I started taking Vit D, so my levels were around 50 when diagnosed. 25 was considered low at the time of diagnosis(>30 was considered sufficient). The bar has been lowered and now <20 is considered low. I continue to take Vit D. Some believe this is some kind of miracle supplement. I have my doubts. I'm an outdoors person & so are most of my friends. We all came in between 25 & 30 when Vit D levels were checked. I also think I might have been higher if I was checked in spring, summer or fall.

    It is hard for me to ignore some of the studies on BC & Vit D. So I take Vit D.

    I came across some information about how they determined what a normal Vit D level was. I look for it & post if I can find it again. It had to do with the level of cadavers(or maybe autopsied). Going to look for it......

    Mine has always been low.  But in Jan '14, I was at 20.  My integrative doc said he would prefer me to be at 75-95.  Mercola's blog said to treat heart desease and cancer, an optimum level is between 70-100.  Im taking 10,000 units daily, for 2 months, then we'll check again.  I take a white, thick liquid. Place 5 drops on back of hand and lick.  That was what was recommended.

    My MO recently put me on 50,000 i.u. of Vit D each month.  I'm thinking what good does that do?  My daily intake adds up to way more than that.  Unless the prescription is better absorbed.

    I think I'll look into the drops some of you ladies are taking.  They also seem to be more easily absorbed.

    some folks are not good metabolizers of vit d, i live in texas and my job of 15 + years kept me outside in the sun for 8-10 hours,my level was 23 when diagnosed, tried for 2 years to get it to at least 60 on 5k but never went over 30, onc bumped me up 10k in Jan (actually he bumped me last oct but i forgot and kept taking 5k) so i am curious what my next check will be....

    I seem to be doing better with sublingual Vitamin D.  I've had a slight increase over oral capsules and getting nearer to the level I want to be.  There are drops and tablets for this purpose.  I'm not sure where the metabolism of Vitamin D takes place though.

    I'm interested in Vit. D also.  Not sure what it was at Dx.  I got tested some months later and it was 36, I think.  That was(*) "normal" but on the lower end.  After about a year of supplementing with 2,000 IU daily and getting some natural sunlight over the summer, it had gone up to near 60.   Now, haven't been supplementing very regularly this past year and I'm having my levels checked next week.

    As NadiaT has posted, although there is a link between Vit. D levels and BC, there is nothing conclusive about cause/effect at this point.  However, we all have, or have had, BC and a recent meta-analyses has shown increased survival for people with higher (high normal) levels of Vit. D.  There are some ongoing studies being conducted right now, and the findings should be out within a few years.

    (*)  Normal levels used to be listed as 20-75 ng/ml.  Now, it's 50-70ng/ml, with he recommendation to go to 70-100 ng/ml. if you have certain cancers or heart disease.
