Breast MRI results

Since I have a very, very high risk of breast cancer (lost Mom and daughter), my doctor ordered an MRI of my breast as part of a wellness check for Medicare after turning 65 last month. The results came back as:

both breast have small amount
of glandular tissue

small nodules in both breast,
left more than right

left breast has clumped area
of nodules seen on MRI images

MRI guided biopsy of this area is recommend

My question is, why would I need to fast and have someone take me home and it take 2hrs. if the radiologist didn't think it was serious. I've researched the surgery biopsies and the needle biopsies. I'm surprised...has anyone else been through this type of situation?

Or should I be posting on another thread?

Thanks, X3sMom

i've only had the mri & not an mri guided biopsy, but it sounds like they are maybe going to sedate you a little, probably because you have to be still for so long for it to be successful. Without a biopsy, by the time they start the biopsy & do the mri it usually takes about an hour, so I can see where you might be there two for a biopsy. Fasting will make you much more comfortable lying on your stomach so long too.

I too was told to fast and have a ride home.  I agree that you'll probably be more comfortable laying still without a full stomach.  I had the MRI guided bx (and had had a stereotactic about 3 years ago, which was much faster).  The MRI bx did take about 2 - 2 1/2 hours start to finish. I was a fuzz dizzy when I first sat up from the table and so I would guess that they just want to make sure you don't have to worry about driving afterwards in case you're not feeling quite up to par, especially after having fasted.  Best of luck to you!

    Thanks Ladies,

I've read that those things (fasting and a driver) weren't necessary for a needle biopsy, only an excisional or incisional biopsy. I'm hoping they have a cancelation and can get me in sooner than Mar. 13th.
