nihahi - I'm waiting for authorization to view the picture forum
Lahela - Good luck tomorrow! Excited for you and hope it all goes well.
Well, I finally feel like I might be starting to feel better. Good thing because I am starting back to work tomorrow! Still very tired, but luckily I work from home, so if I need to rest I can.
-
Drains are an inconvenience you will be happy to get rid of, but they are the worst part of the surgery.
Lahela, I am praying for you tomorrow. It will all go perfectly, no complications, and hopefully, this will be it for you!!!! You have been through a lot and deserve a a smooth stage 2. Please let us know how you are as soon as you feel up to it.
-
best of luck tomorrow Lahela
Thanks Janet, Lahela and Jeannie for your words of support. I think you are right and that patience is the key right now. That and just recovering.
Lemon, I went home with 4 drains, hubby emptied them for me twice a day. They are a nuisance but manageable. I ordered a drain belt from the TLC site which I did use. Had mine removed twelve days after surgery, but who's counting and everyone is different.
Good luck with your return to work Beebop.
-
Beepop, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow! Good progress!
-
Thanks for the well wishes, ladies. I've decided I won't get the sideboob lipo because it's virtually gone now (I think it must have been persistent swelling from the abscess) so it will just be crop circle revision under local - no biggie. Then nips in June and tatts after that! It feels good to have a solid plan!
-
Lemon - Wilbur is our mascot who first made his presence known in the hours following Jeannie's DIEP surgery. In the most adorable post ever, she let us know that she was well, and then 'Wilbur' came up amongst a few other happy thoughts with very creative spelling.
He was quickly adopted as the spirit of surgery, and is credited for holding our hands as we drifted off and protecting us while we sleep. Wilbur visits us when we need him, and has done so much bed hopping that he's getting a bad reputation.
Someone can probably tell you exactly where to find that post, and it's a good one. For me, Wilbur helps to take things less seriously. Often we discuss how us girls are the only ones who 'get it' , and we also get scared. Wilbur keeps things lighthearted for me - has special status as also being part of our club.
I think he's in Switzerland today.
-
I think Wilbur was in charge of the music in the OR today - he played loads of my favourites and gave me and the PS something to talk about!
It took two hours and I'm bandaged up until dressing change on Friday. Back to the bathroom sink bathing routine. PS still wanted to do the lipo and said "but there's 20 grams difference in volume" but I pointed out that my originals were 200 grams different so she let it go
And I discovered just how much feeling I still have when they were doing the local... a lot! Ouch!
-
Lahela - so happy you finished today in only two hours. Glad Wilbur was there to direct the music choices.
Rest up and hoping for great results on Friday at the revealing. Interesting to know there is still feelings, sorry you had to find out during the local.

I am almost 5 1/2 weeks post surgery, and am feeling better each week. I'm pretty upbeat about everything except the abdominal swelling. It's a drag to not be able to fit into any of my clothes. The black yoga pants are getting old. Is there anything I can do to help get rid of this fluid? Last night I was going to try sleeping without the binder. (I feel better when it's on but am sick of wearing it.) I rolled to my side and all that fluid went to the side of my tummy. It was the freakiest thing! I got up and put my binder back on. Haha.
-
Lemon, I came home with four drains, and could have cared for them easily myself, but my DH LOVES this kind of stuff, so I delegated it to him. He built an excel spreadsheet to track the output, had a clean white towel laid out with all the drainage and dumping equipment, and just crowned himself the Drainmaster. It pretty much cracked me up, but I'll take the help!
Wilbur is our anesthesia/narcotic mascot. Wilbur was born when Jeannie had her DIEP and was messaging while she was still pretty out of it, and we got a long string of gibberish. In it was the name "Wilbur." A tradition was launched!
Laheha, we're all in your pockets today!
-
jmb.....hmmm that doesn't sound like plain old post surgery swelly belly. Could you actually see a shift in where the swelling is, in a short span of time? If you tap on the swollen area, can you see ripples, like water moving??? It could be you have a seroma. That would mean either aspirating it, or constant pressure for a length of time, and hoping it resolves. When did your surgeon last check your swelling????
Lahela....woohoo.....so happy for you. I hear you on the "sensation thing" too....a wee bit of OUCH anticipated!!!!Just got off the phone with my PS office. I have an office appt booked for April 2, possible nip date April 21....sooooooo ready to be done!!!!
-
jmb5, we had surgery the same day.... I still have some abdominal swelling. I just feel bloated and "heavy". Weight wise I am 4 lbs heavier than before surgery, but I have been sitting around for a month, not doing much. I put my jeans on the other day but could not zip them. I then decided that even if I could get them zipped, they would press on the incision and not be comfortable. I went out last week and bought another pair of yoga pants since it seems like I will be wearing them for awhile. I have never worn a binder, my ps doesn't use them. I can't feel any fluid sloshing around, like you described.
-
nihahi, I have my nip date for 4/24. So excited! I am even booking my tattoo date too - just like to plan ahead. I was told for best results to wait 4-5 mos for the tattoo, even though my ps said 1 mos was fine. I am booking with vinnie for sept.
-
donna.....that's great news....we can hopefully be "nip buddies"! I admit to being envious of the ones who can get to Vinnie, given his reviews, but, I also know there must be more than one spectacular tattoo-ist in this world. Just have to find out how others in my area have made out. I have a massage appt tomorrow with a MT who had BMX with implants, nip recon and tattoo done locally. I'm going to ask her the "inside scoop" for us Alberta gals. Gotta get going ...... already behind in my day. Hope everyone is doing well!
-
hi all, they sayi am doing great and may be discharged tomorrow (only 3 nights in the hospital)! I am going to have to try acting unwell so they let me stay longer! V. Slow and sore but improving hourly. Having some joy buzzer sensations in reconstructed breast! Bizarre!
-
Beebop I have been waiting for authorization for a couple of weeks now

Concerned and anxious about DIEP scheduled for March 18. Several issues...1. I've seen pictures and realize that everyone is different, but I don't want to continue looking like the bride of Frankenstein. I know to expect swelling, scars, drains, and temporary pain but just hope to eventually have a more "normal" figure like I had before (tho smaller and more uplifted!). It will be better looking than now with expanders, right? 2. Due to cording on right side, it has been a challenge gaining flexibility and strength that will be gone for a while again. Dr. said "there are too many moving parts" during the DIEP and I will need a third surgery, not just a "fine tuning." An issue that my pacemaker monitor picked up is making everyone move to a conservative stance. I am concerned that the cording could get worse. My dr and his staff have been great about answering all my questions, but they haven't been through this and right now I value viewpoints of those who have personally been down the road, not led the guided tour!
-
jmb - hmmmm, that does not sound good about the fluid. Have you checked in with the PS? I am almost 8 weeks out and still having a lot of pain and swelling. Trying to figure out if it is actually swelling or if I have a 'bulge'.
Annajo - Glad you are doing well. They were going to send me home after 3 nights, but I asked to stay one more night because I just didn't feel ready to go home.
-
For those of you that are curious where "Wilbur" came from, here is the original posting by Jeannie after her surgery. It left us all scratching our heads, and of course, a good case of the giggles. Ever since then he has been the Patron Saint of this group. Below is the original post hours after her stage 1 surgery. It speaks for itself.

teacher64.....As any of the veterans here will tell you, "concerned and anxious" at a few weeks out from surgery is very much the norm.
I went into flap surgery with significant shoulder issues, had some cording post surgery, and major regression on shoulder mobility and pain.....but.....with time, patience, daily exercises and a great physio..... at almost 1 year post, I have full ROM. It can be so disheartening to keep gaining mobility, then losing it, then having to work to get it back, repeatedly. I admit to shedding more than a few tears that I would never get my "shoulder back".....but, it can be done. Did you have rads? I can't speak to that scenario, but I'm sure some of the rads veterans here may have some words of wisdom for you, if that applies to your mobility issues.
The "frankenstein" fears do fade, as the scars fade. Again....it takes time, different for everyone, for the physical scars to fade, and the emotional "refocusing" to happen. imo....almost anything looks better than expanders! Been there too. There is nothing "natural" about that look at all.
hugs....you can do this, and come out happy on the other side.

Rosebud & Debwarrior- hope you are feeling ok and continue healing well
lahela- glad to hear your step 2 went well today
jmb5 -hope the fluid dissipates soon, can the dr. remove excess fluid?
annajo - glad you are doing well, hope they let you stay another night
nihahi and Donna - hope you both continue to do well too, waiting to hear about your nip experience (hope they are fantastic when done) who and where is Vinnie the tattoo artist you mentioned?
bebop - thinking about you as you return to work today
Janet_M and Sbe - thanks for explaining Wilbur ( I was wondering too)
Goldie thanks for sharing Jeannie's Wilbur post, it did make me laugh
I have my initial appt with the PS on 3/11 and will find out if I can be scheduled for bmx with immediate diep - I have been trying to gain a bit of weight (which isn't a hard thing to do, just wish there was a way to direct it all to my stomach only
I am not skinny, but would like enough tummy for 2 breasts!)

Hey Sisters!! First, thoughts of healing to the gals that had surgery this week. Second, calming thoughts to the gals that are preparing to get it done! My doctor told me that any ladies getting reconstruction done are very courageous and strong.
I have last week behind me and do not wish a re-do. My doctors are great surgeons. The hospital rating, I am withholding until the revision. My husband has been wonderful as usual. The surgery took longer than expected and only because it was into the extra second hour did he get concerned. He wanted an update b/c of the extra time and there was no one that did that for him. My b-i-l said he called him twice and he never heard my husband upset.(i am the one that gets the emotions counts). Anyways, They finally did update him and told him that there was extra scarring from the previous c-sections and the right breast really gave them a challenge from the previous PS surgeries before placing the flap. I was in from 8.30a.m. until 7. Then the recovery room was another 3 (which I watched the clock tick those hours) and hubby wanted to see me then and wasn't allowed. So finally at 10.30 p.m. he came into my room looking concerened but relieved as I was talking away.
I have two mounds with cleavage from what my breast navigator said and I have not looked because I am afraid to jinx them. lol. I will see them today since hubby is doing shower detail.
We have figured out the binder and bra compression thing and he has the 4 drains under control.
I told the nurses that I had about ladies in my pocket during surgery, yeah I got the look like what? Thanks everyone for being there for me. I do feel well and ready to get the next few weeks of healing here in SA and then to go home. I really miss my animals but from catching up on reading, we left Monday afternoon when the flakes just started to fall and I am hearing from family how lucky to have missed the storm.
I just wanted to catch you up. And I wasn't even anxious Monday a.m., just want it done. Take care. You all are strong for just being here. Kat
-
nihani, I did not have rads, close call, but no. Hoped to avoid rads due to heart issues and fortunately it has worked out. I had had foot surgery a week before that awful phone call. Two surgeries in less than two months were a challenge but thankfully my cardio and other drs are working closely. I feel stronger going into DIEP than cancerectomy and I can walk now, so recovery should be a lot smoother.
-
teacher.....yep....look for the "positive".....there's always something in that category! Glad to hear you feel stronger now, and have a good team looking out for you.
katski...Yeah! Keep up the healing. Can't imagine being awake/aware enough in recovery to be watching the clock.....I was out of it completely....no memory of recovery at all!
-
sunone, vinnie is a little northwest of Baltimore, MD. I hear he is good and he is only about a 2 hour drive for me, so I plan on using him. If you go on the reconstruction forum, there are threads for vinnie.
Teacher64, everyone is different & has different experiences, but I am very pleased in how I look! I think I have (or will have) a better body than before this whole mess. My stomach is flat & my breasts look great. A lot of it is genetics, but my ps does not think my skin will scar very much. I am now using silicone strips to reduce the scarring even further. I have straight ones cut to go around the incision on my diep breast, a lollipop shaped one for my lifted natural breast, a very long one for my abdominal scar, a small square for my belly button & another for my chemo port scar. It is a "process" each day - taking them off & washing them, drying them and then reapplying all of them in the correct spot. I will do it every day for 12 weeks. Actually, I think the thing that looks the worst for me is I have "spider veins" above the flap, where my radiated skin is. However, my ps said not to worry - after stage 2 she will have a laser doc get rid of them.
-
Nihahi, I wondered if this might be more than just swelling. My tummy is firm and does not jiggle around like there's fluid in there when I touch it. It was just weird when I layed on my side and everything moved down. Maybe it did that when there was fat in there and I didn't notice?
Last time I talked to my PS was about 3 weeks ago when I was just noticing the swelling she just said it would be smaller in the morning and more swollen in the evening, which most days seems about right.
Beebop, I don't have pain, just the swelling. Could that be a hernia? I saw someone post that they thought they just had swelling and it turned out to be a hernia.
Donna, what you describe is pretty much how I am. Lay on your side and let me know what happens. Lol. Interesting that your PS doesn't recommend a binder. Now that I've used it, I feel better when it's on. I wear spanx when I leave the house and they feel good too. I feel less "heavy".
-
goldie, thanks for sharing the Wilbur post. I've heard the story before, but never saw the post. Too funny!!
Congrats, lahela!
Annajo, glad all is going well for you. Hope your transition to home goes great.
Kat-ski, the waiting for my family was hard too. I told my mom 8-12 hours and when it got past 8, my hubby said she got pretty nervous. Mine took about 11 hours. Glad the first week is behind you. I had drains removed on day 11. At 14 days I started to feel human again.
-
jmb5, I just laid on my side and did not notice any difference. I almost feel like when I was first pregnant - my stomach is extremely firm and does not have any extra skin to "pinch". I am close to being able to zip up jeans, so I don't think it is extremely swollen. It's not really that bad to live with - I just have 4 pairs of pants I can wear & I just keep washing them. Also, I know that it is only temporary.
-
Thank you all for sharing your experiences with the drains. I think like some of you my hubby will enjoy feeling like he is helping. He is already nervous! Waiting so long I know will be hard on him. I got confirmation today I am now officially scheduled for May 5th! I am so excited but now its seems so real. I am scared of the long time being under. I continue to be so amazed at how brave you all are, and so jealous I haven't already done this.
Wilbur- when I read what Jeannie had written I laughed out loud. What a great thing to think about while going under, makes me feel like I wont be so alone. I just watch some videos my BS sent me, discussing all the risks... wish I didn't know now.
jmb- As you know I am following in your foot steps here in Cleve. I hope you feel better soon and get this swelling ( or fluid) looked at.
Here is my question of the day- The swelling I understand can last a long time. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy in Sept. I was swollen for at least 8-10 weeks maybe longer. Are your pants not fitting due to the change in body shape or the swelling? I have looked at hundreds of picture of this surgery and some of them are a drastic transformation in the belly. I am not thin, really about 20 lbs overweight but I do have enough for C's. I currently have D's. I am fine with that. Were all of you thin or in shape before the surgery? If not how flat is your stomach? Okay so I am asking multiple questions now.
-
Lemon - I have answered your questions below:
Are your pants not fitting due to the change in body shape or the swelling? I think my pants don't fit due to swelling that will resolve itself in time.
Were all of you thin or in shape before the surgery? I was thin and in shape before surgery. I had lost 40 lbs and got in very good shape in the 6 months leading up to surgery. Eating well and lots of time at the gym!
