Read the book, "Salt, Sugar, Fat" by Michael Moss  You will never eat processed food again, LOL!!!  The stuff food manufactures not only put in the food, but what they do to sell it, get people hooked on it............YIKES!  Very sad.

I had just gotten my boys Subway subs for lunch the day I heard about this on the news. Disgusting that a company founded by doctors would allow this. Bet they don't eat their own crap.

Yeah, Leggo, my son loves Subway. Really disappointing that they put that crap in their food.

How completely disgusting! I know many of us agonize over what foods to eat to prevent more cancer, or at least I know that I have. After going through various phases and cutting out various foods or adding others, I am more and more inclined to think that the real issue is simply eating real food. When I buy bread I want to see the following ingredients on the label: water, yeast (or sourdough), flour, salt (optional) olive oil (optional) and nothing else, thank you very much.

What Michael Moss wrote about, also Dr. David Kessler in The End of Overeating.  Once you read Dr. Kessler talking about how chain restaurants and GMA ( grocery manufacturers of America) plan for "HYPERPALATIBILITY" - you won't eat anything EXCEPT pure, organic unprocessed food which YOU or someone you know ( well) prepares.

BTW, Dr. Kessler was head of FDA when he took on the Tobacco Industry years ago, and is now focusing on improving FOOD SUPPLY as he knows well the dangers of what we eat today.  Mark Bittman also focusing on this issue.

Falleaves, after I threw the 16 bucks for 2 sandwiches in the trash, I did a little more reading about them. They really are scum. Poor Jared....remember him?.....ate exclusively Subway to lose weight and probably ate his way into an early grave in the process.

I'm really going to have to go looking for a substitute. There's no way my boys are going to give up fast food subs. Must be the sauces. Homemade subs don't cut it.

This information should not only be on the Alternative thread but belongs EVERYWHERE.

Did a quick search "azodicarbonamide nz" and hit the 1st link (below) - USA seemed to be the only country where its "approved" (without clicking on the "more" link)

How's this for an easy to remember list (NOT) when youre searching labels usually of unintelligible print.  (Don't forget to shop with that microscope. )

Looks like the Environmental Working Group put together a list of 500 bread products that contain azodicarbonimide:

    http://www.ewg.org/research/nearly-500-ways-make-y...

The whole wheat sandwich bread I buy isn't on there (phew!)

Musical, it drives me nuts the way the EPA and FDA ignore what other countries do in banning certain chemicals (as if American bodies work differently). Subway produces bread without AZ in other countries. So obviously they CAN do it and still be profitable. I wish our government cared more about protecting our health. I'd love to see a law that any product banned anywhere in the world would trigger a review by the FDA or EPA, that shifted the burden of proof to proving it WASN'T a health hazard, before it could be used in the U.S any further.

Leggo, I'm really disgusted by Subway's other practices, after seeing what you posted. Even Burger King was willing to pay an extra penny a pound for tomatoes, going to the extremely poor field workers who harvest them, but not Subway.

Horrible. This is what my kids have been eating, thinking they've been making healthy choices. I'm enraged.

"Despite Subway’s marketed image of being the healthy alternative in the fast food industry, several of its products include questionable ingredients and chemical preservatives that most do not know about. Subway’s 9-grain what bread, a seemingly healthy choice, does contain all 9 grains, but only contains 2% or less of 8 of the 9 grains. The bread also contains high fructose corn syrup, which outnumbers the amount of all 9 grains in the bread, and a plethora of other artificial ingredients. The bread makes up for this lack of hearty and healthy grains by artificially coloring the bread with ammonium sulfate and caramel color to produce a misleading image."

Doctors????? Phhttt. More like money-grubbing a-holes sitting around a boardroom laughing at how they got away with it for so long. I hope someone starts a class action and sues their sorry asses.

Ugh. The last sandwich I had at Subway, I picked the 9 grain bread, thinking I was making a healthier choice. So much for that....

Most things that are advertised as "whole grain" are the same. Don't just be mad at Subway. My experience is also that the whole grain and whole wheat bread is almost always sweeter than regular white bread too.

Yeah, MelissaDallas, it is a very widespread problem. It's very confusing for consumers. The first ingredient in multi-grain is almost always "enriched flour" (aka, white flour). And even if you do manage to get 100% whole wheat, you still have to watch out for high fructose corn syrup!

Falll, after reading your link from the other post, I got to do a bit of digging. Somewhere I'm pretty sure I saw mentioned US eats 70%  GMO. I'll try and track down where it was.

Anyway any GMO IS DISGUSTING! Obviously the higher the percentage, the less chance you you have of finding healthy food.

It's all about lies lies and more lies, some blatant, some with plenty of subterfuge, like using words, "pure" clean and green" even "organic". I wouldn't trust my own country as far as I could kick them either....for example, they supposedly say we dont allow GMOs here, BUT in reality the fine print allows it to come through our borders in other ways aka "made from local AND imported ingredients" which manufacturers dont have to state their presence if theyre below a certain amount or already processed like pasta. We've also got plenty of camels noses in the door....like some oops moments from lab experiments....

If you really want open a can of worms try looking up the HORRORS of Codex Alimentarius which is purported of course to be safe but has a much more sinister agenda...heres a taster (excuse the pun)

Disclaimer: if you dare to enter into this minefield by google searching or whatever, be aware, there's plenty of controlled opposition. That is, people planted on blogs, comments, forums et al, to provide the "favourable other side" so the people will be confused, or listen to the more "authentic voice". Goal is to DISCREDIT any "unfavourable" discussion about the agenda of the powers that be, who have put this in place. Of course the favoured taunt is "conspiracy theorists" (aka nutters).

In the document from the NSFSA (New Zealand Food Safety Authority ) Domestic Food Review,  Quote..."Note, in this context and all further references to ‘food’ in this document is meant ‘food and food related products’"  Unquote

Heres an interesting link, with much to say about the pharmaceutical side to this nightmare.

I also received the email from ewg.org...

And I also found out the whole foods market sells conventional produce and GMO stuff as well. Am I the only one that was this ignorant?? I thought the wholefood was my grocery store and I just go in and pick stuff but no. Now I have to read all the ingredients. This is just so insane for a simple grocery shopping activity. I am completely disgusted.

No, but a lot are. That's why this info should be everywhere.

Even so, youre always going to get downplayers, naysayers and the willfully blind. Thats why this rubbish has gained so much traction.

I also think real food is important. Unfortunately, many real foods like wheat flour are contaminated with GMOs. I avoid that too. As a follower of a Paleo diet, I am very much aware of just how difficult it is to avoid chemicals, sugar and artificial crap in our diets. I can't believe all the stuff I used to eat! Ugh! I buy our meat from a local farm (grassfed/hormone free), our veggies locally (CSA). Fruits remain problematic, though we grow some of our own.
