astragalus -- safe to use?
Hello!
I have been given astragalus supplements by a naturopath to help me with some chronic fatigue. I would really like to take them but am worried because they are a phyto-estrogen. The naturopath is saying they are a lingan and not an isoflavone (like soy and licorice), and therefore not dangerous for breast cancer patients. A study I read said they are made of flavanoids and a lingan. What the difference is between a flavanoid and an isoflavone, I don't know, and my head is starting to spin! Anyone??
Thanks!!

I am also taking astragalus 900mg 2x a day. The naturapath I go to specializes in oncology. I only take this day 5-15 and just took my last dose of this cycle. I don't know the answer to you question but truly believe all the supplements he has me on is helping with energy and lessening side effects. Looking forward to seeing the responses to this.

Astragalus
Astragalus, an herb used for centuries in Asia, has exhibited
immune-stimulatory effects. Astragalus potentiates lymphokine-activated
killer cells (Chu 1988). One study found that astragalus could partially
restore depressed immune function in tumor-bearing mice (Cho 2007a),
while another concluded that “…astragalus could exhibit anti-tumor
effects, which might be achieved through activating the…anti-tumor
immune mechanism of the host” (Cho 2007b).It was observed in a clinical trial that astragalus inhibited the
proliferation of breast cancer cells. Authors of the study stated, “The
antiproliferation mechanisms may be related to its effects of
up-regulating the expressions of p53…” (Ye 2011). Similar findings were
noted in a previous experiment (Deng 2009). -
I just started using this under the direction of my naturopathic.

Hi everyone,
Has anyone with estrogen positive breast cancer been told not to take astragalus because it has estrogen?

I was taking astragalusroot but then after reading your posts looked into it further. This link says it is not safe if you have estrogen positive breast cancer. I am going to stop taking it.
