Concerned about lump that was not part of biopsy.

Hi!

I'm not sure if anyone can answer this, but it is bothering me.  I will find out soon enough as I meet with the surgeon on Thursday, but has this happened to anyone.  I was dx'd with DCIS this week.  Never expected this nor did the Dr. doing the biopsy as she said she was pretty sure it was benign.  However, after they found the microcalcs and I needed a biopsy, I started feeling around and found a lump right near the calcs.  Before biopsy I had the Dr. feel and asked her to check the mammogram.  She did and said she didn't see anything, but based on biopsy I could get an U/S afterwards.  I know she thought it was benign so didn't think it was a big deal.  So, I ended up with a huge hematoma from biopsy and you can feel the lump even better now.

This will probably change things a bit, since it was not part of the biopsy.  But, will the Dr. do an U/S or something before surgery to try and figure out that piece of the puzzle that was neglected?

I have my complete pathology and will add that info in the signature line soon.

Thanks!

do not depend on the Dr. to initiate the ultrasound esp if she said "you could get an ultrasound", remind the doctor to do the ultrasound or perhaps an MRI? before your surgery. Unfortunately 1. many things don't show up on mammogram esp if you have dense breasts,   2. you are worried about this and need to put your fears at rest  and 3 it might actually be something and why not have it dealt with in one surgery???

hope it isn't anything and that your surgery goes well. sorry about the hematoma

Thanks Jelson. Actually the Dr. who did the biopsy and I asked to recheck the mammo was at the imaging place I was sent to.  I am now set-up with MD Anderson and will meet with a surgeon who will be part of my team on Thursday.  I believe I will be in good hands and they do more additional testing that a lot of places and it is multidisciplinary so all Dr's are working together in the same building.  And yes, I do have dense breasts so am fairly confident this was missed and no one did an U/S.
