So...whats for dinner?

My guess and that's all it is...A guess....heat travels through the muscles of the different cuts of meat....differently.
I must have been posting while others were too....
Honeycrisp and Jazz apples are my favorite ones. I'll *have* to get 5 pounds each Sunday.
-
laurie- I HAVE NO IDEA. There that's my input! LOL
Bedo I love Honey crisp apples. I really don't like the taste of delicious. I like Jonathan or any of the tart ones. In other words if it's a cooking apple I love to eat it! LOL.
Went to Chinese with DH before he left for work. Looks like hell be getting sent to work in Florida after all. Who boy. Well see h ow it goes. Not the first time in 40 years of marriage he had to work out of state. He's been in NC, NV, GA, CA, and IL. Sometimes for months. But I'll miss his weekends with me. His parents passed last year; I'm not in tx (kept for the darn magnesium) so it's probably a good time for it. Our daughters wedding will be in May and it's looking like a June will be the move. Anybody down there want a visitor? I'll probably drive down a couple of times to visit. Nothing is ever easy. He still has a couple of years before retirement. Sigh.

I am not much of a meat roaster, so I don't really know the answer to your question, Laurie.
So last night after touring 699 Boylston st. with DS2 (he is dying for us to try to understand what a commercial real estate asset manager does) we had a nice dinner at a newer restaurant in the Prudential area. Had lobster popovers for appetizers, and roasted kale salad with scallops for my main. Both were yummy. Stayed away from ordering things people complained about on Yelp since all dishes were pricey, and it worked out well. Very little news on the girlfriend except that she is coming into town over St. Paddy's Day weekend. We will just be patient, and when he's ready to, we'll be happy to meet her! He's a good guy....and I know he feels a bit "watched" by his many married friends as well as relatives, so patience is the key here. I love that your son made the recipe SOS call, Carrie.

Nance, that cake sounds wonderful. I think I might plan a dessert party.
I have a terrible sweet tooth so could down a couple pieces of that! Chocolate heroin!!Tonight I made a toss of chicken, broccoli rabe, red pepper, onion, capers and orzo. Sauteed some extra chicken pieces so we can have chicken parm one day this week.
-
moon - where in Florida is your DH going?
-
wherever Florida Power And Light has its office. He actually works for a division of that Company - Next Era. I'll find out where. Just hate all the uncertainty.
-
moon - FPL is all over the state, as is Next Era from what I can tell, lol! After 30 years as a military spouse I am a pro at uncertainty, but there is no doubt that change and moving is very stressful!

When I moved to Texas, I was given this Cookie Sheet Brownie recipe. Interesting to compare to the Texas Sheet Cake.
COOKIE SHEET BROWNIES
1 stick soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 lb can of Hershey’s syrup
4 eggs – beaten
1 cup flour
Beat together & pour in 10x15 pan
Bake 350 for 25 min
FUDGE FROSTING
Boil together:
1 stick butter
1-1/2 cups sugar
1/3 cup whole milk (I always use 2%)
Take off stove & beat in
½ cup chocolate chips
Pour over cake
-
Oh my goodness - Page 600. Laurie - way to go starting this thread.
-
Minustwo-holy moly!!! that recipe is downright sinful
-
Okay, I just went back and looked at the Pioneer Woman's recipe...and that one is ridiculous too! They are very similar
I like the addition of the nuts! -
So more on the chocolate sheets - USPS just brought my new Penzey's magazine/catalog. On page 41 is ... Chocolate Sheet Cake. The only difference from the one Nance posted seems to be this lady uses half butter & half shortening and adds cinnamon. I need to find a group who isn't on a diet and will eat cake if I make one. Bought a couple of triple chocolate cup cakes at the store today, but I just know they won't be the same.
-
Minus, that's the reason I made the cake in the first place, the penzey's catalog started me thinking about it!
-
Minus, the scales zoomed up when I read the ingredients in your recipe! Sounds delicious and I'm sure I would indulge if tempted to do so. I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate.
We're having turkey carcass soup and a tossed salad for dinner. I got out the frozen carcass (from Christmas dinner) and stuck it in a large stock pot this morning to start thawing. DH took the hint and oversaw boiling the carcass with veggies and canned tomatoes. It was all cooked when I got home about 4 pm. So I fished out the bones and cooked some cavatelli to add to it.
I did some shopping in Hammond, about 30 min. away, following a dental apptment. There's a great produce store there and I bought fresh okra, yellow squash, cauliflower along with staples like onions and potatoes.
I went back to WW this morning. Since the last meeting I attended in April, 2013, I'm up about 10 lbs. It was good to see some of the same women who have stuck with attending meetings. The leader is outstanding and I enjoyed the meeting and found it motivational. I'm hoping dh will drop some lbs, too. Wish us success! There are so many temptations.
What really sent me back to WW was seeing the photos from our recent trip. I couldn't believe how fat I looked!
-
carole - looking at pictures of myself was what prompted me to do this food sensitivity diet too! I see it immediately in my face - I was the same weight I was on the day I delivered my firstborn - not acceptable! I was eating 1200 cals a day and exercising and the scale would not budge, I was so frustrated. This eating plan is not for everyone because it is really hard, you seriously can't eat much that is fun, but it is working and I feel better, so I'm doing it! Good luck - WW is a great program and it is nice that you get to see some familiar faces at the meetings. I am fortunate that my DH also did this diet and my former boss is on it too - it helps if others are participating too.
-
Sharon and I went running tonight. I've been jogging for awhile and she started last week. We go up to the school track and run until she gets done...usually about 30 minutes. I do 3 miles and she does about 2 miles. Exercise helps, but it's very easy to eat more than the exercise burns. I figure about 110-120 calories per mile and that doesn't equal much food. Next week she's going to increase the distance she runs by 1/4 mile
34 years ago, I could do 5.25 miles in 30 minutes and consider it a nice slow warm up pace....not now!!!!!
-
Eric, is Sharon sticking with WW? My difficulties with weight control began in 2009 when I started taking arimidex. I'm hoping that things will improve come September when my 5 yrs. are up.
Dinner tonight will be warmed up turkey soup and a salad. I'm looking forward to another bowl of the soup. It's very good. We'll be eating earlier than usual, about 6 pm, since dh has a woodworkers' guild meeting.
Moon, couldn't you go to FL, too, and live with your dh in a small apartment or rented condo?
-
Thank you everyone for your ideas as to why my roast didn't turn out well. From now on I will only roast eye of the round- sales be damned.
Last night DH said he wasn't very hungry as he had a late lunch. So we had BLT's for dinner. I hadn't had one in so long, it hit the spot! Tonight is eggplant parm.
So I am at the end of day 2 with 4 kids. We have done scavenger hunts, hide and seek, arts and crafts- you name we have done it. Today I broke out the board games. It looks like tomorrow I will only have one additional child as the other was invited to a play date. I wonder how it will be with the dynamics changed?
-
I also can't believe that we have 600 pages and almost 18,000 posts! And no drama or bickering! A group of people from different states, different points in their life and ages, different cooking abilities and we all enjoy each other. Amazing.
-
Laurie...I cook roasts like you described...but instead of turning the oven off at the set time, I set it at 200F and let it cook until the "stick in the meat thermometer" says "medium rare".
That is a lot of posts with no drama. Awhile back I was looking through some old posts and saw Apple's and Michelle's posts....... Thank you for starting the thread.
Sharon does WW, but isn't as diligent about the meetings when school is in session. Her aggravation about weight also started with the Arimadex...It sounds like she is not the only one so aggravated.
-
I also have struggled with losing the chemo weight gain since being on either Femara and Arimidex. This new diet is the first time I have been able to successfully lose, it has been so frustrating!
I love this thread - we talk about BC and lots of other things - happy and sad, funny and scary, and we are bound together by talking about food and cooking, and we really care for each other! It is totally awesome!
-
SpecialK, are you doing the food sensitivity elimination diet? I just read an article about it. The beginning phase sounds very restrictive but doable.
-
carole - I am doing the J J Virgin diet (the nutritionist's last name - you don't get to be a virgin again, lol!) and you give up corn, soy, peanuts, dairy, sugar, gluten and eggs for 21 days. You are supposed to add the items back in separately, a week at a time for each, to see if you are sensitive to them. Her theory is that these foods can cause sensitivity and inflammation and make weight loss difficult. We eat lean, grass-fed beef/pork, hormone free and antibiotic free non-GMO fed chicken, olive oil, low-glycemic fruit, lots of green veggies, beans and salads, nuts, etc. The biggest issue is reading labels and knowing which ingredients might be hiding the listed banned items! I have found it is easiest to eat almost nothing that is processed - I have made my own salad dressings, and try to eat food in its whole and un-processed form as often as possible. I found that completely cutting out sugar has allowed me to lose the craving for it and I have not really been all that tempted following this plan. I am not really adding any of the banned foods back in yet - I did try some scrambled eggs though - I thought I missed them but I really didn't.
-
Holy crap Special K- That sounds HARD! No dairy? And no sugar? So no carbs. WOW.
-
yeah. Not sure I could make it without eggs and dairy and sugar all at the same time. But if it works for you.....
-
Count me among those who really appreciate this thread and those on it. Thank you Laurie for such a fun topic.
-
It is a challenge! Lol! The funny thing is that I can still cook with that stuff for everyone else and not really miss it. My DH has lost all the weight he needs to so now he needs to be careful not to lose any more - so he is adding the things back in to see if anything bothers him. DD will be home the first weekend in March for a fishing tournament so I will be cooking as she is bringing a couple of fishing buddies (guys!) with her. It will be an interesting test - my former boss who introduced me to this diet purged her house of all of the banned stuff, but I didn't. I am doing OK just ignoring the stuff I can't have, and since I have cut it out I don't crave it. I had already been avoiding soy and most dairy, and had been avoiding sugar as much as possible. I really like fruit and vegetables, so it is not too bad.
-
Ditto on loving this thread! Thanks Laurie!

That sensitivity/elimination diet sounds interesting. I might want to try that if I don't soon move off this plateau. I have ten-twelve lbs left to lose and those are the hardest for sure.
-
Nance thanks for the update on that cake. It would never get eaten here in this house..hubby doesn't like sweets and I don't need them! It would be great for a get together though, where other people will eat it all. We have a friend that proclaims after every meal "I need some chocolate" his wife always keeps some in a kitchen drawer for him.
So impressed by all of you monitoring your weight....I just cant get on the wagon. Planning a lot more exercise when we get south, our community has an indoor pool and offers all kinds of classes.
Rough day yesterday....took my mom to docs as she has lost about 45 pounds and is vomiting continuously. This has been on-going and they cant seem to get to the bottom of it. Scheduled several invasive tests in the next couple of weeks, but the internist was throwing words out like...pancreatic or liver cancer? Maybe intestinal blockage? I cried all the way home.
Oh.... and did salad for dinner.
-
Oh Carrie, I am so sorry. I went through this with my mom three years ago and I know how hard it is. (((Carrie)))
