    Hahaha....guys! When we last spoke with DS2 we asked about the gf (whom he was heading out to see  for Valentine's Day and her birthday) and how serious he might feel, he said there were " lots of hurdles" yet. So we thought......maybe this is a "hurdle dinner" (meeting her). But no such luck! 

    He selected an expensive restaurant, so we texted back, asking if there was a special reason to go to a high end spot. He replied that there was nothing special happening....he was just free for the weekend....with nice weather forecasted so we could  walk around Boylston Street and check out "his" building (the one where the 1st Marathon bomb happened, on which his company is doing renovations....and has been an ongoing headache for him). So we will just enjoy our time with our son. Laughing at ourselves.....such torture for us old folks waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop! Meanwhile, we are pleased that he wants to take us out. Just have to lower our expectations about his life!  ;)

    Enjoyed your trip down memory lane, Eric!  :) Those events are always such punctuated times!

    Special....your experience sounds more like our dealings with DS1......fortunately DDIL fills that gap!

    The only cooking I've done today is a loaf of artisan bread for sandwiches. Tonight is frozen pizza and a salad. At least the pizza is from an excellent pizza joint in Columbia, MO. They've just started selling their pizzas in the st. Louis area frozen. Easy peasy!

    Nancey- Sounds good!  Your bread sounds wonderful!

    Boys----is this what I have to look forward to?  Mine NEVER stop talking, both my boys are super chatty and actually tell the other it is their time to talk.  I know the day will come where they will change but I can not imagine it.  Special K and Lacey I could not imagine my sons not answering a text or wondering what is going on in their lives.  Again....I know there will come a day and I will be on the outside.

    DS1 woke up with a fever so it was another day sitting around in the house.  OMG- I am so sick of being in this house!  Lucky me- next week is school vacation week and I am watching 2 kids for the week on top of my own to make some $.

    Dinner tonight is American Chop Suey.

    Agree about sons.  My son was "chatty" as a child.  When he left home for college, not so much.  Then when he started work out in the "real world", first on the East & then the West coast, I used to hear from him regularly when he wasn't involved with a girl.  I mean really, who else was he going to call since most guys (don't/can't/won't) talk about their thoughts & feelings & dreams.  He's been with the same lady for 13 years now.  So of course he calls her instead of me - as he should.  But she & I have never bonded so essentially I've lost a son & not gained a daughter.  Sigh.  He does answer emails, but she doesn't respond for 2 or 3 weeks - if ever.  Sadly we don't talk on the phone very often.  When he called out of the blue last Sunday I was so surprised. And we talked for an hour.  Nice treat.

    Thought I'd try to chime in on the dinner thread......love to cook but not so much lately. Dh wanted beef fajitas, so got take out from our favorite place. However, my taste buds are not being nice and the food just didn't taste right.

    Carol, I like "confetti" mashed potatoes and carrots, just boil them together then smash them with butter, salt and pepper. Good way to get kids to eat carrots too

    Or just carrots with "parsley sage rosemary and thyme" I can remember it from that old song. But this looks pretty good too, although it's not a soup

    For dinner. Tomatoes and beer. (Hey, it's Friday, and I'm going hiking tomorrow) And yes, I'm putting plenty of salt on the tomatoes. I have to go shopping

    Lacey, I am glad it's just a fun visit! LOL

    Specialk and Minus, I've got to agree with you all about the boys. My DS1 lives in town. If I didn't ask him for help to put out the garbage cans once a week I wouldn't see him for months. His wife is lovely and tries to get him to call but it's as hard for her! LOL.  DD2 lives in Madison.  I have left messages that say just call and let me know you're alive..... i even told him to just hit my number on the phone and hang up. Then at least I'd know he was still exsisting. LOL.  DD 1&2 call every week. 

    Bedo I can't believe you can't dance. You can do anything! 

     laurie, maybe it will be different for you. Your boys are growing up with the phones.  Maybe they will think differently! And I hope next week is going ok for you with the extra kids. The good thing about adding kids to yours is that when they leave, it seems so easy with just your own! LOL

    Nance you make so much bread. You have to post your favorite recipe. 

    Carole, I love butter flavored grapeseed oil. I also love the lemon flavor. Is the store Olivia by any chance? 

    Eric, you really did wait til they asked that question, right? That just shows you're not stupid. LOL.  As for Mickelson dad, yeah I can see that, my dad told us to move up the date if the wedding cause he knew we weren't gonna Wait! LOL.  Dads..... Hope you are writing down the suggestions fir when you need them for your DD! LOL

    Supper was a Wisconsin fish fry. Whitefish and I chose German potato salad. My DH went with the fries. Yum.

    Hi Tang....Welcome from the guy on the thread.  Sharon (my wife) said nothing tasted right during her chemo.  Stuff tastes OK now , she says....so her taste buds came back.

    Yes, I waited until after we crossed the border..but it wasn't because I was afraid.  It was more of a timing thing.  Her folks lived just 3 or 4 minutes from the border crossing, so there wasn't any time before the border to bring "it" up.  

    I kid DD about having the M60 (machine gun)

    I am in nc.  70 degrees when we got in Thursday night. Yahoo!  Unpacked then headed out for a bite to eat but totally forgot that they roll up the sidewalks at9pm  hit the grocery store to find some grub  got fried chicken and Mac salad.  It is like camping g with no furniture in the house.  No tv painted one room today then shopped and got the carpet ordered then Marti Gras party at the Marina rest.  Had gumbo soup. Just ok

    Did have an awesome turkey melt for lunch though

    Off to bed. More painting tomorrow

    Carrie, you must be loving your temperate climate! I remember when we first moved into our bare lake house, it was like camping for a while....Air mattresses on the floor, a card table, no TV. Puzzles tho. The kids were young and it was fun. When the carpeting was put down it felt like a palace! It's fun to create your new space. Enjoy your time there!

    Moon, butter-flavored grapeseed oil sounds delicious.  I'll have to remember that for the next trip.  This store is just called Oil & Vinegar.  It's a good place to go and graze because they have samples of dips and pestos and oils and vinegars with little pieces of bread or crackers.  There's a big selection of jarred and bottled fancy snack and appetizer foods, all quite pricey.  I haven't bought any of them.  I buy the oil and vinegar in the vats that they pour into your bottles.

    Michigan has the Fustini's oil & vinegar stores, which are very good.  Before our local store opened, I checked out Fustini's online, but the shipping was too expensive.  My first experience at shopping at this type of retail store was in Holland, MI, where I bought a Meyer Lemon flavored olive oil that was really good.  Our store just has lemon flavored. 

    I had 4 bottles filled yesterday and it was $48 including sales tax, but the bottles last for quite a while.  I sauté with the plain grapeseed oil and use the flavored oils mostly in salad dressing.

    I think tonight's dinner will feature a steak and roasted asparagus.

    Carrie, it's so much easier to paint in an empty house where you don't have to worry about the carpet and don't have to move furniture.  Good luck with your project. 

    Laurie, the two extra children may help to entertain your boys.

    Eric - good for your DD.  Sounds like you've already done more than your share today.

    Tang - I too have lost my taste again since i've started back on Herceptin for a year.  I know how discouraged you are.  The worst part is many of my favorite things still taste like cardboard - bread, pasta, rice.  Yesterday I decided to try deviled eggs - another old favorite.  Nope.  It gets discouraging even bothering to cook but we just have to keep trying.  

    Bedo - liked your "confetti" idea with carrots & potatoes.  I always liked carrots & turnips - grated and steamed w/butter & salt - a veggie dish once served by a lady from England of the WWII generation.

    laurie - I couldn't imagine not knowing what my kids were doing every minute either, but you do find that as their world enlarges, they are less focused on us - and this means they have been successfully raised!  In my son's defense, he is busy!  He is a firefighter, also works three 12-hour shifts as a tech in the emergency room, and goes to school full-time for sports medicine.  It is interesting though - if he is hurt - I am his first phone call.  He has had a sprained ankle, a separated shoulder and a relatively severe allergic reaction within the last year - he was immediately on the phone with me.  Not his dad, definitely with me!  Some things don't change!

    It's been a very lazy day for me. The sciatica is getting better, the exercise really has helped. I'm dicey on stairs but at least I can stand and walk fairly straight (if slowly.) Haven't taken any Aleve today at all. Yay! Progress!

    For dinner tonight I'm making  Grace Young's kung pao chicken, my favorite takeout dish. Quite impulsively, I made a Texas quarter sheet cake on a whim. Some friends are coming over tomorrow so I'll feed the remains to them so as not to overindulge in my cake obsession.

    Auntie I am glad hour sciatica is better! 

    Olivada is the vinegar and oil store. I have tried the butter flavored, lemon flavored and garlic flavor for cooking. I love the apple maple vinegar. My daughter bought me the sample pack with 6 oils and 6 vinegars to try. It was fun pairing them up. 

    SpecialK and Eric they do remember Mom when they need her.

    Nuance. What is a Texas quarter sheet cake?

    Funny my son called me today to ask about cooking his turkey they gave him at work for Christmas. His girlfriend is working and he is in charge of dinner. Those are the random things I get from my son

    Travelling home today. Will be road food blah :(

    I like the sound of those oils  just saw an oil store in our new town. Maybe investigate when we go back in march

    Carrie, it's a Texas sheet cake made in a quarter sheet pan lol! A Texas sheet cake is a simple chocolate cake, sort of like a cakey brownie made with cocoa and buttermilk. It's disgustingly sweet and will cure any chocolate craving you might have. I've never seen a church cookbook without a recipe for one and it seems like every family has someone who makes one.

    DD has an amazing sweet tooth!  I think she got it from Sharon's dad.  He could eat peanut brittle a pound at a time.....

    The quick chocolate cakes with vinegar also taste great. They are also known as Depression cakes or wacky cake.  And most of them make an 8x8 pan so a nice small size. LOL

    Ok- I have a question.  When I cook an eye of the round roast with the 500 degree oven method, 5 min per pound turn oven off etc. ( we have talked about this a bunch.)  It always comes out a perfect medium roast.  BUT when I do a shoulder roast the same way it comes out very rare.  WHY?

    What is a round roast? Why does it have an eye?

    The shoulder is muscly. 

    And taller?

    Maybe?

    I am making a bucket of split pea soup for the week. It called for dry mustard. That should be interesting.

    And I bought the most beautiful apples from Washington State, They are huge. Honey Crisp
