Donna. Great results!
-
This week I nearly cried when I finished my first workout since cancerectomy in December. Rehab paid off because I was so scared I'd never have any arm strength and today I lifted 10 lb weights, even though my right arm needed a bit of steadying help from my trainer. I hope to be as fit as possible for upcoming DIEP.
-
wow Donna, you look fantastic!
-
Goldie, For a week and three days I am thrilled. Not perfect, need to have a few tweaks, but so thankful.
Nihahi, How's your weather? Thanks for the bra info.
Janet, Love it, "What happened to my filter". A couple days ago I was visited by a bc sister I befriended when she was first diagnosed at the clinic. She looked like me at diagnosis, deer in headlights and I knew she needed a friend. We talked and kept in touch. She came to clinic for her last chemo, and she is scheduled for DIEP next month, so we met for coffee. What did I do first, took her and her sister into a handicapped bathroom to show them my new breast and incisions, and told her she would be okay. That's me, no filter! :-)
Donna, You look beautiful! So happy for you!
Marty, Thanks for info. Cotton T-shirts, so me. Comfortable.
Jmb, LoL, That's what I'm missing! McDonalds to relieve constipation. :-)

From what I've read on here, those hard spots will be fixed at stage 2 if they don't go away on their own. I actually have a spot that's like a little shelf right in the front by my arm pit. It looks kinda weird and will show in a bathing suit. Looking forward to getting it fixed. My PS said stage 2 will be about 3 months after my stage 1.
-
I just want you all to know all is well here in SA and PRMA. Everything fell into place even the bridging on the Levendox shots. Monday is a go and it is scheduled 8.30 a.m. I know Wilbur will be around but I will try to post when I am aware. Thanks to everyone of you for your support. Kat

These pics are examples of what the Vbeam laser (pulse dye laser) can do for red scars after breast surgery. I found others. I knew it worked wonders on other red scars, and now I found that they "are" using it for breast recon scars. Most big hospitals with a good dermatology dept have these lasers, and some private docs do. If you are interested, do not be talked into IPL treatments instead, they will not work nearly as well. The top pic is the after. Sorry, I loaded them backwards. This happens to be an implant recon, but they can do it on diep too.
-
Kat, glad you are doing well. I was very nervous before mine, but I kept repeating to myself....all I have to do is show up... It helped me a lot.
Kat and Rosebud, think positive thoughts and remember to wear loose pants, 'cause we're all in your back pockets!!!
-
Goldie - That laser treatment is pretty dramatic! Thanks for bring it up. I've got pretty angry crop circles still - six months after my surgery. Looks like I fell headfirst into a two-pack of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and was permanently scarred by the edges. (ok, not quite that bad). But the redness is impacting my decision on whether to have my nipples done. Somedays I don't actually see the point in being cosmetically accurate if I've got such scars, and am content to live with Barbie boobs. Other days I long for the day when I can look down and see something there.
jmb5 - I'm small busted as well, and the wonderbra is perfect for me. And I tried on a lot. I've become a big fan of any store with a generous return policy because I only like trying things on at home these days. Pre Diep I bought two bags of pants/tops at Target and returned all but two items. Same with bras. I buy a million and usually keep just one.
Kat - Knowing that 'all I had to do is show up' helped my nerves a lot too. Also, I was reminded of the excellence of my doctors, and the intelligence of my body, and how they all took care of me as I slept. Everybody in that room was working towards the same goal - health and healing, and the love of life. Considering all you've been through, surgery is time to give your mind a much needed break. Let the others do all the work for a change.
-
weird observation....since surgery, I have noticed increased sweating in my armpits. Anyone else have that issue?
-
LOL, Janet. I love the way you describe things. I remember you saying something about your tummy scar being fairly red, but you didn't mention you crop circles. Well, I know there are docs in Canada that use this laser. A lot of PS's don't know as much as a good dermatologist about the different laser's and what they can do. You don't have to wait too long after you final surgery to have the scars treated. Some PS's actually know that, and will suggest you get them treated sooner than later.
-
Since bras and crop circles are topical these days, I have a question. I'm now finding that most of my old bras have too much room at the front - I think because I don't have the projection provided by the nipple/ areola.
When shopping for new ones, I have found that the bras that don't have any padding show the outline of my crop circles through them. Ok if I'm wearing layers or something heavy, but not for thin blouses. Don't want to take my jacket off at work and run into this issue. I bought one bra with some light padding, which solves the crop circle issue, but I don't really need the padding (big enough on my own), and that style gives me a rounder shape that I don't love. I probably should go and get fitted, but thought someone here might have run into this problem and found a solution - you guys are the real experts!
Kat-ski and Rosebud - will be thinking of you on Monday- as many others have said - just show up and let the experts do their thing.

bella.....light snow and windchill of -29, I'm having a coffee and trying to catch up on things like the threads. That's awesome of you to be so supportive of your bc friend. It truly is a special connection, when you find someone who is going through the same tx and sx with you. I'm sure your show and tell helped her gain some "I can do this" momentum. Keep up the healing, and stay warm.
donna.....it is soooo not a contest, but IMHO....you get TOP marks for an amazing recon and recovery. You sound so happy and your photos show spectacular results. I'm guessing you were pretty fit and healthy going into surgery??.....makes a great deal of difference on the early outcome. Just a wee word of advice....your "inside" still has healing and catching up to do to match your "outside"....let yourself heal well before challenging yourself too much. But saying that, only YOU can know what your limits are. Again, big smiles for you and your results!!!
teacher64....it's the "little things" that can mean so much....I'm so happy you had that accomplishment.....you'll have many more in the future.
lea....no experience with that se....maybe other's have???
ridley.....bra shopping has been a challenge for me since puberty ....smaller busted doesn't mean easier fitting, and there always seem to be fewer choices. I bet the larger ladies think the same thing for their situations!!! I'm sorry, other than trying on a zillion bras, or going the "fitting" route, I have no advice for you.
katski.....enjoy the Riverwalk area....it's so pretty and vibrantly alive. We're all in your pockets.

hi everyone,
I just wanted to say that I am joining you on the flap side having had my bilateral diep on Feb 13.
Looking forward to possibly having drains removed next week since they are not draining much.
Bella, you sound great. Donna, you look great.
Curly, sorry about the chemo effects- as another two-timer I know it's not fun. small frequent protein meals helped me then and now and some Mac n cheese.
Becky, I hope you get news that you have an incidentaloma as the other women call it, but with 16 years between my first and second diagnoses I get the worrying thing. At the same time so many times these things do turn out to be incidentalomas. I'm thinking of you.
Goldie and Nihahi and Jeannie thanks for all the good advice. Even though I don't post often I have really benefitted from your sage advice. Thanks to all for posting about your experience. All the anti-constipation advice really helped me Jeannie this week. Things moving in the right direction.
And I'm looking forward to needing a new bra.
A question for those who have been through stage 2- my breasts seem too far apart. Can they fix that in stage 2?
Best of luck rosebud and Kat-ski.

I had my pre-op yesterday and then did the pre-op at the hospital. Was impressed with the new surgical hospital I was assigned to. It has 6 operating rooms and only 12 overnight rooms (private only). Surgical patients only, no illnesses allowed. Hospital is owned by a group of doctors mostly plastic surgeons and spinal surgeons. They also have 2 surgical rooms for outpatient procedures and a recovery area for those patients. Went up to the overnight room area for a tour, it was so quiet great for healing. Ready to roll for March 10.
-
Bailey... About compression, I don't think any doctor has women compress their flaps. I know I had a surgical bra that I wore for 2 weeks, but it was very loose. The compression was for the donor sites for me. Is there anyone who has compressed their flaps?
-
Goldie, Thanks for the info on the red scars, that's great to know!
-
Good Morning Everyone! This is my first login after surgery, I made it! I was discharged on Friday evening and have been very groggy, so sorry I haven't posted.
Surgery went well, I ended up having a SIEA flap on the left breast with the Prophylactic Mastectomy. I was surprised about this as I was not clear that this would be a possible option but apparently, they don't know until surgery day if this can be done. I did have the Diep Flap on the right breast. My initial surgery was over 10.5 hours but had to go back into surgery on the SIEA flap as they felt I had some leaking they tightened up. All is well, just very swollen. walking okay, today feels better than yesterday. They have me in a binder with 4 drains.
For those that have upcoming surgeries, this went better than I thought overall as many of you know I was very nervous. I will try to catch up on the posts and how you're all doing
My boobs are just very swollen, when will they start going down?
-
I forgot to say, most important than anything else, my path reports on my right breast came back clean!
-
Good luck Kat-Ski and Rosebud14! My thoughts are with you!
-
Wow! Donna, you look great! Congrats!
-
Yay, jazlaumir! Congratulations on the clean report!
Katski and Rosebud - thinking of you and sending prayers for good results and quick recoveries.
-
BeeBop, my thoughts and prayers are with you , I pray that everything will be ok, waiting is definitely the worst! Sorry that you are going thru this but I pray that your results come back clean!
-
Jaz, good to hear you are doing so well. Sorry they had to take you back into the OR, but that is better than losing a flap. I hope it is all good from here. As far as the swelling, somebody else will have to speak to that since I have not had my surgery yet. Some people do swell more than others. Hang in there! Keep us posted.
JBdayton, the place you are having your surgery sounds like a dream. I keep thinking about what you said, "quiet." What a concept?!!!! I hope your surgery goes just as well as your tour. I can't wait to hear everything.
-
Jaz so glad everything went well with your surgery but most importantly the great path report on your right side.
Kat-ski and Rosebud best wishes for tomorrow. I will be in your pockets and praying God is in your surgeons hands. Get a good nights rest and talk to you on the other side.
-
Thanks jaz! Glad you are on the other side! So happy for you on the clean path reports!
-
sending hugs and positive thoughts to katski and rosebud. Safe surgeries and gentle healing to you this week.
jaz.....wonderful path report....glad the issue with the flap circulation got caught and cared for. I had lots of swelling not just in the flap, but "whole body" for the first few weeks, then most of it quickly resolved, except for the flap itself, which took about 6 months to slowly reach it's final size. Everyone is different, no way to predict how it may go for you, imo.
deb....I'm sure some of the ladies that have had significant flap revision done at stage 2 will be able to advise and reassure you. It seems that LOTS can be done to make flaps look and feel better for all kinds of issues. I bet you will be helped too.
goldie....that's interesting info on the laser. Amazing what can be done for some issues. Are those results/photos from your PS??? Just wondering about details like how old were the "red" scars when the lasering was started, how many laser tx to get to the "after photo", etc. Anymore info on that you can share? I've been trying the silicone strips for about a month.....I think there is some benefit, but, I'm also another month out from surgery too, so hard to tell what is having the greater affect. Today I decided to try just using the strips in a control area to see if that shows any difference. I'll let you all know how it goes.
-
I think I had more swelling and bloating in my abdomen, than the flap. 4 weeks out and I am still no where near able to put jeans on due to bloating & sensitivity of incision. I am very comfortable in sweatpants & yoga pants. I had some swelling to the flap, but I don't think much.
How many of you are still taking ativan (or something similar) for anxiety? I never took it before diagnosis & have been taking it off and on for the past 15 mos to get thru treatment. Now the only treatment I have left is tamoxifen, stage 2 diep & tattooing. Should I at this point be trying to do away with the ativan? I don't like taking anything that is not necessary, but at times I feel anxious, when my mind goes to a dark place - and I worry about my future. My prescription is for 3x a day (as needed) & I average 1x day. Should I make an effort to try and not take it? Or, just continue with it?
-
donna.....now that you have gotten through the BIG stuff, why not try to focus more on "lifestyle" alternatives to handling stress, and if you start before you wean yourself off the med, you'll already have a better option in place once you no longer take the ativan! Ativan certainly has its place in this bc thing....but I'm like you, I don't want to take something longterm, if I can find a healthier alternative, and it makes me feel like less of a "patient". Dark thoughts and worries about the future are part of the "recovery process"....no point in denying we have those feelings, but finding tools we can use to minimize the impact of them goes a long way in making you feel more "in control" of this wild ride.
-
Nihani, NO, that is not me....lol. I don't know how old those scars were, but according to what I have read, it doesn't matter, they just need to be red to be treated with that laser. You can start treatment on fairly new scars (3 months old), if you want them gone faster, and old scars that will not go away.
Kat...good luck tomorrow.
Donna, I weaned myself off of everything because I was afraid when I really need it, like hydrocodone, or Xanax, etc.. it wasn't going to work. I could feel myself becoming immune to them. I could take a hydrocone and not even feel tipsy, and the Xanax was not cutting the anxiety anymore. At one point I went up to two Xanax, and then I realized this might not be a good thing. So, I slowly reduced all drugs till I am off everything. So, when I have my diep and I need pain relief the stuff will work.
