Checked my probiotics and that strain is in there.  My doc put me on them, but I was already taking them.

I'm going to head off in a side direction for a moment but it's related.  Some in the altmed community believe that cancer is a fungus or derived from a fungus but researchers don't believe that at all so I don't either, and yet I will say that it seems to behave much like a fungus.  For years I've had trouble with my digestive system and things never seem to work quite like they should--that is, until I found a really good probiotic that works for me--most do not.  I've also had problems with fungus--athlete's foot, yeast infections etc.  I finally gave up buying separate products and bought a big tube of monistat cream and use that for all of them lol.  Every month after my period I itch intensely until I use the cream a couple of times.  The thing I have noticed lately though is this:  no more itchies after my period and a toenail fungus is growing out and my digestive system has improved considerably. And I'm doing great--getting lots of positive comments on my glowing skin.

I was going to say too that you often hear of candida overgrowth--not sure what I believe about that either, but I do believe, and research is showing more and more, that your gut bacteria can get out of balance and create all kinds of mischief.  They've even found that obesity may be caused by imbalance,  or maybe your gut imbalance is created by obesity and glucose metabolism problems.  Anyway, with all the reading I've been doing, I've come to the conclusion that the 2 biggest things you can do to beat this and improve your health is to get your gut back in balance, which may take quite awhile, and get your blood sugar under tight control.  My doc says mercury detox too.

Pipers dream, I think there definitely is a connection between the gut and cancer. A good portion of our immune systems is in our gut! So if our gut isn't working as it should, our immune system has to be compromised. I have Crohn's disease. Even my (very mainstream thinking, conventional) breast surgeon couldn't deny that there is likely a connection with chronic inflammation in the gut and the increased likelihood for developing cancer anywhere. She did say there is no real proof of that, but it was obvious that she believes that.

I have been taking Florastor (which is sacchormices boulardii - spelled wrong I'm sure but I don't have time to find the spelling) for my Crohn's for about a year or so. I actually found this article while doing a search trying to make sure it couldn't CAUSE cancer. So I was very relieved to find it!

Would you mind sharing what probiotics brand/formula you're taking? I also take Golden Health Probiotics, which has 15 strains and 23 billion good bacteria.

    Thanks.

vinmama, for my "everyday" pb I take Inner Eco, which is a liquid coconut based kefir, and less often I take Garden of Life Primal Defense which has the strain you're talking about plus homeostatic soil organisms--the founder cured himself of Crohn's with HSO's.  The Inner Eco has really straightened me out and made the bathroom a pleasant experience. Silly me though--I'm most excited about my toenail and hoping to wear flip-flops this summer.  My best friend also has a fungus-y toenail growing out and the only change she made was to start using grapeseed oil.  Hmm.  Hers was twice as bad as mine.

Thank you, pipers dream. The Inner Eco looks really good! I'm going to see if either our local Sprouts market carries it, or Whole Foods (which is a nearly 45 minutes drive, so not close, but not impossible). Unfortunately the other one you mention seems to have barley and oat grass in it, and I can't tolerate either. I've tried too many supplements that have either as an ingredient and my tummy just doesn't agree with it, even if it's a small part of the supplement. At least I'm getting the Saccharomieces Boulardii from Florastor. I'm going to have to look into HSO's now though, that sounds fascinating.

I get my Inner Eco from Whole Foods.  To look up HSO's, google Garden of Life and look up Jordan Rubin's story--the man nearly died from a really bad case of Crohn's--he's over 6 ft tall and had shrunk down to less than 100 lbs.

I got a small trial bottle of Inner Eco at Sprouts yesterday and will be trying it! Thanks, pipers dream! Still working on researching HSO's.

    Thanks for this article, vlnmama.

Saccharomyces Boulardii is found in Kombucha tea as well.  I just brewed my first batch.
