93 year old Mom Triple negative
My 93 year old Mom has been diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer . She is scheduled to have a mastectomy February 20. The Dr's all feel that she shouldn't have any problems, because she is health for her age. This is all so new to myself and the family, Can any of you give me your thoughts on what we can expect.

jocruiser, welcome to Breastcancer.org.
Until you hear from members with their experiences and support, you can learn much more about Mastectomy at the main Breastcancer.org site. The site can also provide information about Triple Negative Cancer.
Best wishes to your mother and you.

wow!!!! i'm so sorry for your mom's diagnosis. i was 41 at the time of my diagnosis, so i don't have much to offer in terms of what to expect. i would think that age would make a huge difference.
does she have any additional information from her pathology report? will she have to do chemo, radiation, etc…?
kind hugs,
lee

Jocruiser, sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis. Glad to know she is healthy otherwise.
Lee, I am 44 and was just diagnosed with breast cancer in January. we have very similar diagnosis, actually except for mine is Grade 3 and that i do not know about the lymph nodes involvement until my surgery. I see you also had chemo before surgery. Can you kindly tell me if the chemo shrank your lump or not? I would expect so, if so how much? I am about to have about 5 months of chemo too - already had two rounds of AC and 2 more then 12 weekly sessions of Taxol and carboplatin. How are you recovering from our mastectomy? Did you have the BRAC1, 2 gene test? i did and it was negative. But i am planning on doing the bilateral mastectomy like you did for many reasons including the fact i have dense breasts and instances of TNBC coming back in the other breast. I dont know if you have had reconstruction but i am not planning to do reconstruction. Was the surgery hard to take physically or emotionally? Can you kindly share with me some of your feelings and thoughts regarding surgery and reconstruction/non reconstruction? I am a little bit not so sure about my decisions and the possible mental and emotional affects? Thank you very much. take good care, love and light. Leanne

jo, perhaps read the mastectomy threads or post a topic about mastectomy to get advice on that treatment. (I have not had mastectomy and not triple negative so can't advise you).

Jo, I had only a double mast with no reconstruction (I'm assuming your Mom is not getting recon...). Because no organs, bones or muscles are involved it is a fairly painless process!! I was very surprised and pleased. The hardest part is about 10 days after when the nerves start regenerating and she will get a lot of zings and zaps across her chest. It is a good thing and shows recovery. I wish someone had been able to warn me as I went home without pain meds as I wasn't in pain!
Her restrictions will be on picking up weight, but I found my worst restriction was bending over. Getting in and out of bed and taking care of her drains my require a bit of assistance. Recovery from the anaesthetic alone is hard enough. I wish her all the best! Please keep us posted.
