I received this info from ARMY of Women today if anyone is interested in participating: If you are premenopausal; have been diagnosed with atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH), lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS); and are not currently taking tamoxifen, we need you Flaxseed is a natural food that contains healthy fats, antioxidants, and fiber. Laboratory and clinical studies have found that flaxseed can slow the growth of breast tumors. Research findings also suggest that eating flaxseed may reduce a woman's breast cancer risk. This study is investigating the changes that occur in the breast cells of women who eat 25 grams of flaxseed daily for six months. The findings will help the researchers learn more about whether flaxseed can be used for breast cancer prevention. Please read on to learn more about what is involved and who can participate. And please don't forget to tell any of your family members or friends in Chicago, IL or Columbus, OH about this study! |
What's the study about? Scientists are investigating whether flaxseed may have a role in breast cancer prevention. This study, which is being conducted by a research team at the University of Chicago, is exploring if and how flaxseed changes biological markers (biomarkers) associated with breast cancer risk in the breast cells of women who have ADH, ALH, LCIS, or DCIS and are not taking tamoxifen (a drug that can be used to reduce breast cancer risk in high-risk women). what's involved? If you sign up for Flaxseed Alters Markers of Breast Cancer Risk, the research team will contact you to confirm that you are eligible. If you choose to participate in the study, you will be asked to: • Have certain screening tests to make sure the tests and procedures are safe for you to take part including, a physical exam, a review of your medical history, blood tests, a breast exam and a random periareolar fine needle aspiration test (RPFNA), where you will have cells removed from your breast using a needle. • Be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to eat 25 grams of ground flaxseed every day for 6 months or to maintain your usual diet. • You will be asked to provide a first void morning urine sample and blood sample. • Complete an interview about your diet, medicines and lifestyle. • If you are taking flaxseed, you will be asked to record the times you take flaxseed in a diary. The research team will also call you periodically to ask you everything you ate and drank in the past 24 hours. • You will visit the clinic after one month, three months and at the end of the 6 month study. At these visits, you will provide a first void morning urine sample and blood sample and have your height and weight checked. • At the 6 month visit, you will also have a breast exam and a random periareolar fine needle aspiration test (RPFNA), where you will have cells removed from your breast using a needle. who is conducting the study? Swati Kulkarni, M.D., University of Chicago, IL where? University of Chicago, Chicago IL and Ohio State University, Columbus, OH Who can participate? You can sign up for the Flaxseed Alters Markers of Breast Cancer Risk Study if you meet ALL of these MAIN criteria: • You are a premenopausal woman over age 21. •You have any of the following: - A history of atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) with or without a family history. - A history of atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) with or without a family history. - A history of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). - A history of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). • You are not currently taking tamoxifen • You live near or are willing to travel (at your own expense) to Chicago, IL or Columbus, OH. |

Sorry, I copied and pasted and wasn't able to remove the errors from my original post, but it seems to be mostly legible. You can contact Army of Women if you are interested.
