How vain are you?

Beesie did a good post explaining the weak research/correlation on moderate alcohol consumption. I'm not going to worry about it if I want a glass of wine.
-
Selena, Run, do not walk to an excellent Mexican restaurant or good bar and get yourself a refreshing, delicious Margarita! This should be on everyone 's bucket list!
Caryn
-
Mmmmmm if I could drink a 'Rita would be a first choice. Or maybe an aged Scotch on the rocks. I can only dream.
-
Selena, good question about alcohol consumption. For me, alcohol consumption went up after my DX and I didn't feel the least bit guilty even though it was a crutch to help me sleep and act somewhat normal in the evenings. (Sigh!) Now that I am on Femara, I have reduced alcohol to 1-3 glasses of wine/week. But not because of the BC/alcohol connection. I do so because I need to control my weight and these are calories I can do without. Just FYI, I picked my onc because she was the only one who didn't have a problem with an occasional glass of wine.
I definitely won't feel guilty about drinking. Wine is just one of life's pleasures!

Yes, Momine, come here right now and help me kick some a$s. I am weak. And then it will be a big mean girl slumber party! Agree with everything, actually -- I think there is probably a link between drinking and some forms of bc (but for other forms they have not necessarily established a strong causal relationship) -- and, yes, I think drinking is essential at times. I have to work at it -- I don't naturally drink much. But I am having a beer right now, in fact.
And I haven't had a margarita in ages, but agree with Melissa and Bronxgirl that it is necessary that you should have one, Momine. But here is my further advice: have a shot of tequila first, the old fashioned way (tequila, a really nice one, then salt off your hand, then bite on a lime). THEN have the margarita. It should not be a blended one -- those are difficult to drink.
Have two seven year olds and do not get out much for margarita night, that's sure. But, you know, I probably should. Occasionally. I only wish I could be there when Momine has her first one! Tequila is a drink for special occasions. There should probably be dancing.
Melissa, it's a mess. This is a thread for vanity, and I do not want to go OT and be a bummer. But my PT, each time she massages my Frankenstein-like ruined 'area,' purrs softly to me about recon -- 'Don't decide now -- you have time -- you can always do it later -- you are so young --' etc. So today I started crying while she did it. And she read this as my being so sad about my recon issues, which is not untrue, but I just wasn't crying about that at that moment. And now everyone is launching into action -- I need a 'counsellor' to deal with my issues regarding reconstruction. I need to be able to look at my terrible and botched emergency sx gouge job in the mirror more. Also she forbids me to do yoga or run. And I issued an ultimatum -- not going back unless things change.

Hi! I'm new here and have never posted on any discussion. I love the topic.
How vain am I? I can't believe that I took my 9 year daughter to school and went for a blood test, looking the way I do!
I am on my 5th of 8 chemo rounds, but have managed to "save" my hair with an ice cap. Okay, it "saved" my hair, so far, for my daughter's sake, but my naturally wavy hair is now the texture of a Jack Russell terrier!!! Its a pixie cut, but I look like one of my daughter's brunette Barbie dolls who "got a haircut". You know the way that Barbie hair never actually lies flat EVER AGAIN once it goes in a bathtub???
Then there is the makeup. I was a model in my 20s and was NEVER seen without at least the makeup basics. Today, I had the Barbie "haircut" hair, no makeup (I still have eyebrows, but the eyelashes are constantly sticking me in the eye), a huge herpes blister on my lower lip and that's before I let you in on the wardrobe choice today!!!
Here it goes: a red cotton turtleneck (I slept in), a "vintage" (another word for should have been donated years ago) red Gap sweater, black yoga pants (yes, with visible panty lines), white sport socks and a pair of navy blue fake Crocs bought at the local Chinese shop.
I laugh at how much I have changed with cancer.
Thanks for letting me put that out there!

Athensamazon. So, so funny and so true!!! Love the way you write. I had a few days when I did my morning walk in my jimmie jammies.....somehow wearing my sunglasses made me feel anonymous and made it "all right" . LOL.
Love and hugs, we're all working back to mascara.

Cider, so glad to hear you're NED! That's great news!
Momine, I love that dress! You look amazing!
Welcome to this thread, athensamazon! I used to never be seen without makeup either, and now there are days I do nothing more than curl my lashes. I always have to do that!

I called today and was enrolled in the look good feel better program. They only accept 10 in the program. This one is in 3 weeks the next one is in May! Thursday I will go to get my nails done and will try to talk with the tech to see what they do with others like me. This may be a hard conversation given some language barriers (she is from Vietnam). Otherwise is will talk to chemo nurse next week when I begin. I will let you guys know in case anyone else has the same questions. Maybe I am super vain if I'm the first to ask! I got my last drain out, so now it's back to putting a sock in my bra until ps starts fills. I hate the uniboob look!
-
Momine - I like the dress, and I ADORE the shoes - oxfords, with a stacked heel - perfect, just perfect. Looks like you're ready to walk into the conservatory at a country house and serve tea to your posh friends - I'd like lemon in mine please.
Bobo - I implanted ( got talked into it, and that's RARE for me, just couldn't fight the pressure of the surgeon who "really didn't want to do the BMX if I didn't first talk with "her" plastic surgeon. Well, they put in expanders, and the #$%#%^$%# hospital got to charge a LOT more $$$$ cuz 2 surgeons working - seriously, this is SO true - and I HATED them ( expanders and both the surgeons, women too!). Finally went to a different PS at a different hospital who would LISTEN to me, and put in very VERY VERY small silicone implants. As long as I'd already had the damned expanders, I figured I might as well implant silicone. I HATED THEM, how they looked, like "man boobs" and felt - AWFUL under the pec muscle. After I got thru my 5 years of Arimidex, I decided to have the implants removed - so I was EXPLANTED, PS who is a sweet heart, if I'd gone to her FIRST, she probably would have agreed with me to stay unreconstructed! So she removed the implants in her office, didn't make me go to hospital, local anesthesia, one of the phuquers had ruptured - and I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE being Cute & Concave, cuz I ain't Flat & Fabulous as many are. EXPLANTATION - thank goodness.
Try to follow your gut, and do what YOU WANT TO DO - don't be talked into ANYTHING, NADA, NOTHING, NEVAH ( that's Bawstan for never)
-
On drinking; I have a drink, perhaps, twice a month. I drink whatever I'm in the mood for. Wine while hanging with my daughter, artisanal cocktails at a great new bar with my teacher friends. At stage IV, though I am doing well, I've decided to fill my life with joy and pleasure, so I don't give a second thought to the drinking. Cheers!
-
I am very naughty tonight- if Selena is adding all those "D"-words which I love can we push deconstruct a bit further and add debunk as in myths, legends and other unproven "things" LOL
-
oooooowwwwww...naughty, sit near me!
-
but promise me that we will never add "deny"!

athensamazon - herpes blister get thee to the health food store and buy LYSINE tablets. In the vitamin department. Ye Olde Herpes is often caused by stress, and an IMBALANCE of amino acids - too much L'argentine ( chocolate, almonds, brown rice, etc) and not enough LYSINE.
At the first sign, that annoying tingly almost hurts but maybe it itches feeling on your lip, or near the lips - LYSINE. ;-))
Back to our regular programing -
-
LOL- I was "that kid" growing up I have to say- I was always nearby when there was trouble of any kind. We won't add "deny" in my view.
-
Momine - you are lovely and graceful in that beautiful dress!
-
I do support Lysine based on my own anecdotal evidence but you are right- must catch it early. I know some take Lysine regularly at least when traveling or stressed.
I finally let my frustration overcome my better judgement and posted to the Compl. thread- I never liked it when people speak for other people- just have to speak for yourself- thats enough
-
Thank you for all the sweet comments. Those shoes are from my favorite Greek shoe maker and I love them.
Speaking of boobs and foobs, I did not reconstruct and although I am now cleared to go ahead, I am really not keen. I have mild LE in the upper arm and trunk, so if I wear a tight bra-band, I get a large swelling near my arm pit (lymph pools above the bra band). This makes wearing foobs a challenge. I have experimented with various foob arrangements, and they keep getting smaller and smaller . They may well get chucked all together one day, but we shall see.
In the picture with the brown dress, I am wearing a yoga top "stuffed" with a pad from a genie bra topped with a silicone bra-cup liner. The latter is meant to "enhance" but I use it as a foob. It is not a "cutlet," but instead looks like a bra cup made of about 1/2 inch thick silicone. The set cost 12 bucks in the bra store. I realize most women would not consider that "breasts," but I always liked being an A-cup (which I was until my mid-20s or so) and it gives just enough "bump" to make clothes hang right as well as make people think that there must be some sort of boobs in there.
-
Wyo... thank you. DEBUNK has now been added to another post. Caryn... never. I will never add DENY.
So, here it is:
We on the "How Vain Are You?" thread recognize that our sense of fun- and humour is not to everyone's taste. Hence, we have chosen the "Humour and Games" forum to let our hair down. Although swapping "vain" stories, style tips and beauty secrets are always eagerly welcomed, going off-topic is not a crime. Neither is bad language or differing opinions. We recognize that each- and every one of us is interested in conventional, complementary, holistic and alternative treatments as long as there is science-based research behind each- and every one. [Like someone said above, if honey badger pee as a treatment for breast cancer had hard science behind it, I would be the first in line.] We reserve the right to honestly discuss the strengths and weaknesses (and dangers) of everything, and laugh at the ridiculousness of life.
This thread is for sharing and laughter, but it is also about the freedom to DISCOURSE, DISCUSS, DECONSTRUCT, DEBATE and DEBUNK the various- and sundry myths out there about breast cancer and breast cancer treatment no matter what they are. But don't forget to recommend your favourite lipstick shade along the way.

Addendum to Selena's excellent summary - in honor of the, ah, older woman who might be reading this thread, and hasn't been doing her Kegel exercises, maybe we should have a little warning "sign" before inviting each other to watch Mrs. Brown do a bikini wax, hhhmmmmm, wonder what the sign might be?
Expect one of the brilliant women could come up with something? I still haven't mastered ( among many things) posting pictures.
Still DROOLING over those stacked heel oxford shoes, really, drooling. I can only wear flat shoes ( with good arch support) and would LOVE to find something a wee bit more, well, elegant than my Beloved Keen Presidios. Also might mention, in addition to no arches, some great bunions! Used to adore, drool over when I just looked at them in my closet, Joan & David brown oxfords. Guess others have noticed feet seem to get bigger, wider, well, bunions are a hoot! ( especially on hairy toes) as we get older - so even if Joan & David are still made, my feet said bye, bye to them a long time ago. Way, w-a-a-ay b4 bc.
I also miss my old brown & white saddle shoes - but that was more than 58 years ago ;-)))
Yeah, selenawolf, thanks for "defending us" in the other world
-
Sunflowers, I have always loved oxfords, flat, heeled, whatever. Sadly, my left foot now has a bunion, on TOP of the joint, which Mr. Google tells me is caused by having high arches (check) and wearing flat, unsupportive shoes a lot (check, love my leather flip-flops in the summer and flat boots in winter). So I got some arch supports and bought my first pair of Adidas (gah!) to wear in the gym and for other exercise.
-
LOVE oxfords!! Especially with high, stacked heels and spectator-style. Love saddle shoes, but have never been able to find any. When I find a pair on-line, they are always out-of-stock, so they must still be popular.
I don't have bunions, but do have corns between my toes from wearing sky-high stillettos for years. Regular pedicures are a must.
PS. And for the record? I take offence at being called "polluted". I hereby declare to all and sundry, that I do NOT smell. I shower every day. And wear Chanel #5. Religiously.
-
Edited the original post to contain the "vain" mantra.
-
ah, perfume. I'm allergic to musk, so that eliminates a lot of them. Other stuff makes me sneeze, haven't LOVED a perfume/cologne since the 1970's when Bigarade ( was it Elizabeth Arden?) was available citrusy, orangey, clovey - does anyone remember Tweed?
-
My mother wore Tweed. Next to Chanel #22, it was her favourite. She smelled DIVINE!
-
and Shalimar.....
and Obsession, until I got tired of smelling like a vanilla bean
-
Thumbs up to your addendum Selena!
Re: Mrs Brown ~ funniest shit I've seen in a long time! Loved it soooo much I streamed the first episode while on the treadmill this morning and nearly peed my pants more than once! Can't wait for episode two tomorrow.
Re: perfume ~ I'm a huge fan of anything Burberry. Love Touch and Weekend! My mom used to wear White Shoulders. Lovely.
-
Selena - saddle oxfords might be available in sports stores - cheerleader style.
A quick check found some on Overstock and Zappos. Know nothing about whether they ship to Canada but have heard good things about Zappos. Noticed they now carry many other things besides shoes, bags. Current TV ad running.
OOO - favorite shade of lipstick. Saw that Maybelline has a new line called "The Buffs" - nudie colors but some a bit darker. Intend to look for them tomorrow when I go to town, that is if snow doesn't get me. This is North Texas and I don't drive on snow esp. 45 minutes for an eye doc. appt that is easily rescheduled. He should be used to it - he's a glaucoma doc who better to deal with "old" people. Ha Ha.
Can you have bunions outside little toe or are they always big toe? Sunny - ha ha hairy toes. One more thing to remember in summer.
