Anyone adopt or thinking of adoption?

I am about 6 months into my Tamoxifen... still got awhile to go! More and more I am thinking about adoption, because I don't want to wait so long to start my family. I am so ready to move on with my life and my plans. Even though it's still scary for me to think about the future and I'm anxious about recurrence, it feels good to plan a bit and dream about positive things that could happen.

Anyway, I've done a lot of research online about adoption, but I find there is very little about adopting after a cancer diagnosis. Would love to hear if any of you have been through the process and what types of obstacles you had to face as a result of having had BC. Was there a restriction on how long you had to be "cancer free" until you could adopt? And how did they judge that?

Also if anyone is from Canada (specifically Ontario) and has any great resources or any practitioners they could recommend for a consultation or some advice, that would be great too. Hoping to connect with someone who's in the same boat, or has been there done that! Thanks!

well, my son' adoption came out of my first breast cancer diagnosis!

Amazing but true story.I had breast cancer in Feb 2001 and he was born in August .  All happened because my oncologist asked me about family plans.  i told him we wanted to adopt, he told me go ahead.  We were there for my som's birth,, it is the most amazing story.  We had no trouble, I did have to reveal my diagnosis to the birth mom.  A neighbor of hers had breast cancer 9 years before and she adopted twins, so the birth mother didn't care about my situation.  She appreciated my honesty.  She is adopted herself and her adoption story is also amazing.  Her mom adopted a boy from Jewish family services as she had some health issues and they were willing to work with her.

Point is, it can be done, may have to look at many different avenues before you find the right path.  But that is true of adoption regardless of any health issues.  Put it out into the universe and you never know what can happen.

I just had another breast cancer diagnosis, had double mastectomy.  My son is 12 and has handled it well, as he knows mommy survived before and will be fine again.  I feel so very lucky and blessed to have him in my life, and I wish the same joy for you.  Do not be discouraged if one group or agency says no.  Then it will come about in some other way.  Just keep perusing it if it is what you want!  It has changed my life forever for the better and I appreciate every day with my child.

Ps funny thing is he looks like me! And people comment on it all the time!  Life is sometimes very amusing.
