Where IS Larry???? I'm trying to find what you guys are talking about...
-
Me too Caryn!
-
Me 3!
-
Caryn and Melissa, alternate reality is right! lol! I've been following that thread since its inception (quite comical at times) and was following the other thread that is now dead.
-
we need a "like" button!
-
Me 4!

i'm going to hell...i'm ready to post on the Alternative thread that their appreciation for completely unproven hyperthermia reminds me of the belief that drinking a bottle of gin in a boiling hot bath induced miscarriage of an unwanted pregnancy...reel me in ladies before I get in yrouble with the board again with a fight...
-
Melissa, I'm right on the verge too. I have some good ones for the comments about whether hyperthermia treatment will damage the brain. Shut my mouth!
-
wouldn't hyperthermia lead to an increased risk of developing lymphedema? Why would anyone want to chance that?
-
Amy, beats me.
-
my dearest ladies,
Holding ones tongue, is so hard sometimes. I have gotten into more than one dust up over what I've read on those other threads. For me, the irony is that I have no problem with alternative or complementary tx, if there is evidence, not anecdotes, that it works ! Wouldn't we all love a natural, se free cure for cancer? However, for those of us who question or ask for evidence, anecdotes and unqualified "health warriors" are not enough. What really baffles me are those who say they don't need evidence! They are leaving themselves open to any slick huckster out there. Enough said. So, enjoy your Sunday and try to stay out of the quagmire.
Caryn
PS: Kudos to momine who navigates the quagmire so gracefully!
-
Yes, I'm just amazed about how Momine keeps her cool! For me, it's better to just STFU or stay away from those threads. Gotta go there sometimes for a good laugh, though.
-
well, I think it's kinda interesting, funny, confuzzled, and the good news is that getting ourselves asked to "leave" for being ( disruptive?) talking about food? which leads to a Delicious Discussion of all thing VAIN ( Mrs. Brown getting a bikini wax required a change of panties for me!) but the disjointed interruptions by Larry's friend go on and on and on and on and....but someone stuff is really a source of good comedy.
More comedy, a little piece on larry http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/null.html
Ya gotta not laugh too loud until you read the fan's letter posted at the very very very very very bottom, by which time, you'll have to wipe the tears from your eyes
-
Kay, thanks for the info! As Caryn said I am open to new (alternative?) treatments as long as they are science based. Looks like the hyperthermia treatment may be moving in that direction.
-
Blessings, that was hysterical! I had my head back laughing! Thanks for sharing!
-
Children, children
Thanks for the kudos, but really no need. My calm demeanor is only because I have spent way, way, way, way ... way too much time on debate boards over the years (ok, dammititall, 15 years, happy???)
-
Kayb, good to know. I was wondering because my LE therapist is getting hyperthermia treatments along with chemo right now, for stage 3 colon cancer. She is being treated in the Netherlands.
-
kayb,
I have no problem with tx that go through the scientific vetting process. I think that is wonderful. My problem is tx based on anecdotes, heresay or pushed by "practitioners" with dubious credentials. Science based medicine is not perfect either but at least there are standards and conventions that need to be met ( and even that is not perfect!).

I'm with kayb, and yorkiemom, I'd be interested in ANYTHING, as long as a reputable oncologist, cancer study center ( like Sloan Kettering, or Dana Farber, MD Anderson, etc) were studying it. Doubt if at my ripe ole age I'd be interested in anything earlier than a stage III Clinical Trial ( in my current situation) but if necessary, yup, count me in for a Stage I if my oncologist says to go for it ;-)
-
I completely understand that there is some rather promising research on it. It is just what these ladies' practitioners do with preliminary research.
-
Well crap! Philip Seymour Hoffman dead from a drug overdose. What a waste. I could still see him as a great character actor at 75.
-
Yes, just saw the Post article. Only goes to show that everyone has their troubles and that cancer is not the only thing that kills.
-
Found this very decent and clear overview of the current knowledge and use of hyperthermia: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/hyperthermia
-
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. My first thought was "what are they going to do about Mockingjay?" I know they are in post production for part 1, but is his character in part 2? Sad.
-
thanks, momine. Brief and concise! Like with most things in clinical trials, I remain hopeful. It is interesting that the therapy is given in conjunction with chemo or rads. I wonder if there are trials using it as a stand alone tx?
-
Bronx, judging from the altie thread, it sounds like there are private, quack clinics in Europe offering it as free-standing treatment.
I have read about the trick with heating the blood as a treatment for liver mets, but in conjunction with some kind of chemo (if I remember right).
It also sounds, from the summary, as if full body hyperthermia is quite extreme.
-
I still haven't found that thread. I get the jist of it though. And maybe I shouldn't say it here, here goes anyway.
Do you think people had a hard time accepting a chemo drug could be made from fir trees?
Or a drug to treat diabetes would be synthesized from the saliva of the Gila Monster?
I don't mean to start trouble. I will STFU now.
-
Oh my- I am probably going to be in trouble here but... I think people are perfectly willing to accept fir trees and gila monsters if the drugs show sound evidence of doing what they are supposed to do.
I would further say to stay on topic considering this is the "vain" thread that folks have no problem at all with botulinum toxin i.e botox ........ It does what it is approved to do. LOL

Gila Monster------Byetta, an injectable drug
Fir trees-------Taxotere

Ya know, I just hate having to remember to shave my stupid hairy big toes. It'll be sandal time again before we know it.
