Antidepressants

Options

I have my first scan and an oncologist appt later this month and am wondering if I should ask about an antidepressant.  I'm on tamoxifen, so choices are limited - and effexor sounds too scary.   I've only been on tamox since mid November.  At first the only side effect was occasional hot flashes, but now I'm growing increasingly irritable and have very little motivation.  I really don't like being so crabby and impatient - and I'm afraid that this is the new me.  Should I wait it out?  Maybe it will pass?  Is there another antidepressant that is safe with tamox that isn't as scary as effexor?  I hate taking meds, but I'm getting sick of feeling like this.  Just wondering if there is something else I should research before my appt... Suggestions?

I have taken Effexor for over  two years. It is very effective and I have no se's. I am curious. What is scary about it?

I keep reading about how hard it is to get off of, that it gives you brain zaps and that your brain feels like it's skipping.  And that if your body gets used to it, the same thing could happen, causing you to keep increasing the dosage.  I know I read scary things about tamoxifen too, and it hasn't been that bad, so maybe it's the same with effexor.  It's just that I keep thinking I can do without it because of what I've read - but feel like I should try something.

So if you've been on it two years, did you notice any improvement in energy or motivation?

I have also been on it for over two years.  No side effects for me and it has helped reduce my hot flashes too.

I was on it for 2 years also. I stopped because it wasn't working any more and I cross-tapered to another antidepressant. I had no SE's getting off Effexor, but some people seem to. You might not need as high a dose as for depression, so getting off would be even easier. It is given to help with hot flashes, so getting rid of them might improve your mood.

this is good to hear.  Besides the hot flashes, what other benefits have you noticed?  I can live with the hot flashes, but it would be nice to know that it will improve my crabbiness and help me get moving again!

Hi Sophiamarie, I think you are doing the right thing investigating if anti d's are right for you. I'm in Australia and it seems that they are prescribed a lot less often here. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing! Personally, I don't want to add another chemical into my body, particularly with all the other stuff running around In me. In saying that though, if it was necessary I would of course take them.

I believe that all antidepressants have the same side effects if you were to stop suddenly.  You need to taper off when stopping to avoid any of those listed nasty side effects.  I get the whole "adding one drug to counteract the side effect of another drug", but I do feel that under the right circumstances antidepressants can be a life saver.  One must judge that for themselves.  Best wishes!!

Check it out; the good and the bad. I slowly worked up to my current dose and have never needed to increase it. No brain zaps or skipping. If I choose to stop taking it, I'll do it under my psych's direction. No cold turkey. Ultimately, it's up to you. As with all of the other medical choices we make, if it's not for you, then you simply stop.

i take celexa and have since I was dx.  After about 3 weeks on it I stopped crying daily, became more productive and just in general was able to cope easier with making decisions.  I decided I was doing so well i would stop taking it and started crying again over everything and was going to very dark places.  Once I started again everything leveled out.

    Good luck!

I'm not on Tamoxifen, and Zoloft has been a literal life saver for me.

I've been on Arimidex for 10 mos and Effexor for 7 mos. when the Effexor kicked in, it was like someone opened the blinds and let the sun in. It wasn't such a struggle to join the world. My hot flashes eventually eased off too. I'm an advocate for antidepressants. You don't have to live like that. I talked to my GP last week about weaning off them but she recommended waiting until I'm done reconstruction as it is such an emotional roller coaster. In the end, you'll do what you're comfortable with. All the best to you. J

My endocrinologist recommended me taking Cipralex 10mg. An antidepressant.

Just because my heart rates were quite high the past few months. I had an ECG, ECHO and all other tests.. all showed up normal. So he suspects it been the anxiety I take to be the culprit. For that he put me on Lexotanil which made me full drowsy.. so I wasn't even able to overthink on stuffs or react Loopy and i had no side-effects. Felt really good throughtout the 10 days of Lexotanil.

Now he wants me to take Cipralex.. of which I have read so many scary side-effects! I never find antidepressant so helpful as i'm a highly sensitive person and my life/family/health problems can't get suppressed so easily just by a pill and due to a medication I don't want to live like half-dead! BawlingHe is an endocrinologist, so should I trust him much enough to take an antidepressant from him?

What should I do, guide me please. If anyone has taken, or is taking or has any idea about this medication do share your views! May be they will prove some help!

    Hi ladies,

Just jumping in here regarding antidepressants because I am such a believer in taking medication for depression and anxiety. Depression is a serious illness and comes with a list of issues. It rears its ugly head whether you are sick from this disease or not. It doesn't discriminate but there are some that think it's just an attitude thing.

I've been on Cymbalta for several years. If I had SE from it I didn't know it. I do know I was having some difficult times dealing with issues, crying a lot, isolating myself and everyone else. I was so unhappy. One day, I was in the middle of one of those crying episodes when my daughter really spoke firmly to me, not mean, just firm. I knew I needed to get help. So, I did. In 2013, I lost a very dear friend to liver cancer. I was crying a lot and they upped my dosage. Ironically, I was diagnosed with BX two months later and that dried up my tears. Now, I'm dealing with my own cancer. Cymbalta has helped me and I feel it has helped me not to spiral down into that blackness. It's a very dark hole and just waiting for you. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Even if it's another pill...

Sorry, I meant BC instead of BX!  I just get on a soapbox sometimes and can't quit.

I've been on Effexor Xr for several years - 75 mg. - a low dose - helped immensely, and eased my hot flashes.  I could not have managed without it.  I have been off Femara for nearly 2 years, all is well (7 1/2 years out!) and am going to wean off the Effexor this spring/summer, under the supervision of my GP and my homeopathic drs.  Can't think of any s/es from the Effexor, had many from the Tamoxifen and then the Femara, but I did my 5 years combined of those 2 drugs.  About 6 months after finishing the Femara, I started to feel so much better - more energy, no more joint pains/muscle aches, ankle swelling gone etc.  Now it's time to let go of the Effexor.  I am ready.   Remember that you read mostly the horror stories of meds on the internet, as mostly people who have had bad reactions/issues complain - people who are doing well normally do not have much to say.
