Weird symptom
I have been posting with rib symptoms which occurred on my left side (pain, discomfort) eventually it seems to have resolved with occasional twinges, but nothing like it was. My GP said it was from chemo.
However, I now have an odd feeling under/around my right rib (mx) side. It feels like 'something' is moving in there, almost like babies feet or bum! It is so similar to that.
However as I am 52, with both ovaries out, clearly it is not that. I am thinking is it my liver? I have had scans fairly recently for a gynae op and my MRI was clear. This feeling is more annoying then anything but of course as I am stage iii, the thought of some kind of recurrence is ever present.
Anyone else had anything like this? and should I feel concerned?

Definitely get it checked. It could be nothing at all...or it could be something you need to take care of. Several years ago my mom said she kept feeling something moving around in her abdomen and the dr sort of laughed at her. A year later they finally discovered a malignant tumor in her colon. I learned from that to be aggressive regarding my feelings.
-
wintersocks I had soreness of my ribs last year also. It kind of resolved but was on and off for a few months. I also experienced the "air bubble" feeling at times. The closest i got about the rib pain was that I believe it had something to do with Tamoxifen. Throughout the last year I've had joint pain 3-4 times - lasting only a few days, but once it's there it has been really bad and impossible to ignore. costocondritis was another possibility but i'll never know for sure. What calmed me down was that it seemed to be related to muscle/soft tissue. When I pressed hard on my ribs there was no increased sharp pain. It always got better when I was more "stretched" it felt like it had been started off by me sitting and the ribs pressing down on my abdomen (sounds crazy

ladies,
Thanks for your replies. There seems to be a number of us around who seem to have rib issues of one kind or another, New direction I understand completely that your problem seems 'better' when you are s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d. I have that too. It's as if my ribs 'cut' into my abdo when I am sitting. The 'movement' feeling is continuing for me, it's like a kind of 'squirming', with occasionally jags of pain, more twinges than anything. When I had horrid rib pain on the other side my surgeon seemed entirely unconcerned. Perhaps I will mention it to my GP......
-
Hi wintersocks I hope you find out what it is - would be helpful for me as well. My oncologist is also unconcerned as long as the symptoms dont a) last more than 3 weeks b) get worse over time.
I actually forgot to mention this last time I went because there were so many other things we had to discuss. It had disappeared but I was VERY concerned when the symptoms were there...
The thing you said about babyfeet was something I thought as well in the beginning. I was actually a little worried I might be pregnant but of course knew with the non-existent sex-life that it would be kind of spectacular -
I have had this exact symptom. Felt like a baby kicking. I think we are maybe hypersensitive to every feeling in our bodies caused by worry. I assume that maybe it was gas. It was over a year ago that I had this feeling, which is now gone. It seems like for the last 3.5 years I have always had a symptom somewhere. I hope that this resolves itself in your case as well...
-
new direction,
Yes, Lol! same for me, a non existent sex life plus no ovaries means (despite it feeling like a babies kicks) there is no baby for sure, but it absolutely feels like that (I remember the feeling even tho my youngest is now 16)
Kathleen, I am glad you have experienced it too! cos I felt a little odd, posting such a strange symptom. I wondered if it might be gas also, but pre-bc, I never had this. I agree that we are very likely very sensitive, where we might not have been before. However, I seem to have symptoms based around the rib area post bc. I see that a lot of other women have too.
I guess if our oncs/surgeons seem unconcerned then maybe we actually shouldn't be?
Thanks for posting girls, I now know I am not the only one with this.

Huh! I have the same thing too - my hypothesis: intercostal nerves along your right side are irritated - and regrowing/re-enervating and when digestion occurs and moves through the part of the intestines right under the ribcage, the nerves fire and we feel it. It was always there, but since mastectomy the nerves are wacked out. I've begun to note timing of the feeling - and it's usually about an hour or so after I eat and when I am sitting down - so squished ribcage on intestines = weird feeling. I also have made myself feel better because the pain is really superficial - pushing on my ribs doesn't increase the pain - but a light t-shirt brushing against the skin there irritates it more. Thanks for posting this.

Dear All,
I am so comforted by others sharing this symptom. I am lying down in bed whilst on my computer and I have the 'baby in there' feeling now. my eldest son is 20 today! (13th) and I so remember the feeling of his moving/kicks, and it really does feel the same. Lojo your nerve re-generation/gas idea sounds entirely plausible as this feeling is on the right side, which is my mx side. The awful pain/discomfort (now gone) was the left.
As others have reported same on here, I now do not feel so bad mentioning it to my GP.
Thanks or sharing x

wintersocks my rib "ache" was back again yesterday. I noticed it was after a day where I had sat down in a bad position most of the day. While I was lying in bed just before I fell asleep I tried to fill my lungs as much as possible and tried to "stretch" the ribs. It seemed to help a little.
At least it does bring about the great memories of being pregnant - and this time without gaining 40 Pounds or so... -
newdirection,
Have you talked with any medics about these symptoms?.
-
wintersocks, no i haven't. They are kind of vague, hard to describe, and the really bad pain i had last year, that I thought was due to gallstones have not returned (i did mention this to the onc and he also thought it was do to diet changes). It does feel a Little like that pain just 1/10 and I Wonder if it has to do with the omega 3's im consuming (started on flax oil, now im taking hemp seed oil), i know im a cyp2c19 slow metabolizer but havent been able to find any information as to whether or not it could affect the metabolism of those oils.
A part of me is embarrassed to have "all these symptoms". I used to never complain about anything, but now I just tell everything that come to my mind. I will give onc a call if it continues... But the fear is there. What if. And im trying to let go of that. Accepting everything in the future is out of our control, and accepting there will always be unanswered questions.
What can be changed is what is there and that is now. And finding motivation is key. Let go of fear. I think these fears and worries should not be ignored but i must try to find a way to let go of them. The immune system Works only when not in fear. It's really a hard process. I almost never cry anymore but I think what it all comes down to is the fear of not seing my kids grow up. I want to do everything i can. And that is taking good care of myself, taking signs and symptoms seriously and letting go of fear. Sounds very easy...
I will post if i find answers about these symptoms but otherwise I think i should try and stay away from this forum because although i think - well if i do the research now i am better prepared IF i have an recurrence - this is not being proactive. This is fear of something that hasn't happened. -
off topic but in relation to what i just wrote found this very interesting article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3695326/

Hi everyone. I have pain in my lower left rib cage also. I have been trying to narrow it down. I had bilateral mastectomy 7 years ago, lymph nodes removed, chemo and was on Femara for 5 years. I complained about this last year and they did a scan and didn't find anything. I am hoping it is not in my rib bone and just feels like it is perhaps muscle cramps. To me, it feels like I have a sore muscle there. -- Doesn't really feel that "internal" to me - more like a muscle. I look on anatomy charts and your spleen is sort of near there. That is the only thing really near there. My pain has gone from an occasional cramping feeling to a constant dull pain lately. I am going to make an appointment with the oncologist. I probably won't be able to get in to see her for a week or 2. I'll post back here and see if they can figure anything out. I hope others post here if they have similar pain and perhaps we can figure it out.
-
hope your appointment goes well and you get an answer soon.
-
footsox,
I initially had a very bad pain on the lower left side under the rib. I too had all the scans and nothing was revealed amiss. The spleen is there you are right. I was told that there was no other organ there that could give me this pain. It did go eventually, but it was pretty insistent for longer than 3 months. My GP told me it was likely from chemo (mononeuropathy). I am still however, having the 'baby kicking' feeling in the right side. I was supposed to see my GP and was going to mention it today, but I cancelled my appointment as I just couldn't face it. There is this and a few other threads where women refer to pain in/around the rib area following tx, it appears to be fairly common.

Helloladies, i have pain on my left side too(left upper tummy), had CT n PET scan did not see anything. i have that pain sine early Dec 2013. My MO told me it could be heartburn or gas. I took prolesec not working. My pain is not bad, but i just hate knowing that it there. I am trying not to think too much about cancer but how could i not when that pain is still there.
-
I, too, have that pain! It has reached a point where I am getting an ultrasound just for that area as I have even gained weight and seemed to be bloated. Over the past, I've considered bowel build-up as it transverses the upper bowels, and have even been diagnosed with Costochondritis. This area feels like liver/kidney and that something is about to burst. I have to actually lift up my right arm to release pressure under my ribs now!! I fell at work last week and as I'm flat, it was my ribs that hit the ground first. I didn't get more rib pain, but the jolt really HURT my organs inside and I was expecting the pain to escalate to an emergency but it didn't. I'm on daily Morphine, so when any pain breaks through I take it pretty serious. I told my doc about it in January and we just kind of looked at each other, but when I saw him last week and asked for blood-work, he felt the area and decided on an US instead. I'll keep y'all posted.....
-
i think i need to see GI dr. I released so much gas when I walk. LOL sorry TMI.
-
soriya, this may sound dumb, but do you chew gum? I have to pretty much all the time due to a dry mouth from one of my meds and finally googled enough to guess that my gratuitous gas is from gum chewing!! Apparently you suck in air in little bits as you chew and it exits the same way....
Now, if you have gut-ripping odorous gas, are you constipated? I had stomach surgery (Pyloric Stenosis) at 10 days old and have become a guru of the gut over the years. I'm very aware at all times at what is going on in my digestion system....
-
barbe, i didnt chew gum, but if i need somehing for fresh breathe i eat mints candy.lol My tummy started sometime in december n i noticed i was constipated. Then my mo told me that it sounds like gas since it travel from one place to another on the left side. i took colace for 3 to 4 days and it help with constipation but my tummy gassyfeeling stll. there. i took prolesec didnt help. i noticed whenever i took fiber choice tab i released so muc gas. my NP told me to take pepcid, so will see if that help me or not.
-
Releasing gas is GOOD though, soriya, you don't want to stop it as that will bloat you and be painful. You need to find out WHY you are getting the gas. Dr. Barbe signing off...hehehehehe
-
barbe1958,
Oooh your fall sounds so painful. I hope you are fully recovered by now. I have all those symptoms, you describe from March the 7th. My tummy is so bloated, I have my laptop resting on it now and it rocks from side to side as I type lol! There horrid ' baby feet' feeling continues and I feel like my guts are all squashed, around my ribcage, it so uncomfortable. I am a Coeliac so need to avoid gluten, perhaps I am eating it by mistake (I have become a bit slack lately). If you have an ultrasound I would be curious to know if they have an explanation.....
-
winter, the gluten thing could be a valid reason as gluten is in almost everything we eat now!!! I'm glad to see it coming to the headlines, though, as perhaps it can be "backed out" of all those foods. No one needs gluten and those that have a reaction to it are in a lot of discomfort for the gratuitous use of it in our foods!!! People are getting smarter about what they put in their mouths. Now here's a shocker; some medications may have gluten as a "filler"!!!!!!
-
My "liver pain" has been gone for a while but I noticed it slightly the other day when I drank a large glass of lemon juice (when it was at its worst i drank lemon juice, green tea and did the budwig)...
-
newdirection - could it be the acid that is irritating your gut? Gallstones?
I asked my PCP for blood work to be done, he felt my liver area and I got an ultrasound thrown in the mix. Just had it done yesterday with blood work done today. I'll keep y'all posted. I'm hoping for a pissed off gallbladder and not a kidney issue.

Hi everyone. It's been a while so wanted to see if anybody had found out more about their rib pain. Mine has been gone but then slightly back the last couple of days. I just googled rib pain and found this site and it does sound like it simply could be from sitting too long in a bad position:
http://www.sayerclinics.com/conditions-treated/mid-back-rib-chest-pain/
"Rib pain is often due to years of poor rounded posture where the middle thoracic spine becomes rounded (kyphotic) with the chest dropping vertically while slouching at desks, laptops and sofas. This kyphotic, rounded posture has become "normal" in the last 10 years due to laptops, iPads and nearly everybody sitting badly all day and working at computers."
For me it does take some of the worries away because I already thought it might be caused by bad sitting positions.
Hope this helps some of you too... -
Thanks newdirection! I still am bitching about my rib pain though....but just found out I have a bladder infection, so maybe that's causing some of my flank pain. I told my doc it felt like I was going to "burst" so he did blood work.
-
newdirection,
Thanks for that. mine has largely gone too, but with occasional twinges. However, I think it has migrated to my shoulder now as that has started aching.
Barbe, bladder infections are just awful, I hope you are not feeling too bad with yours.
-
winter, I actually got fired from a new job because I couldn't stand for 9 hours on cement!! It was in a furniture "warehouse" and it just killed me. I was popping morphine like TicTacs and was still in agony. Now I'm jobless.....sigh.
-
How is everyone with rib pain doing? Mine has decreased. It's still there from time to time but it has become so obvious to me that it's related to sitting for a long time/bad posture.
I've gotten massages every 2 weeks and there were so many muscle knots in my back and neck. It seems like it has reduced the problem. Easy and very comfortable solution - so I thought I might suggest it if others are still plagued by these symptoms...
