My mom had a mastectomy a little over a year ago at the age of 75.   She was offered reconstruction, but chose not to, because they told her that they would have to lift the remaining breast to match because as she put it "they don't make saggy old lady implants".   For her, that just seemed like too much surgery - she is small breasted to begin with and comfortably goes without a prothesis most of the time, but has one for special occasions.   It was her choice though - the doctors would have been happy to do it.

Your mom made the right decision. I was offered a lift for the other breast and took it. Have been sorry ever since. I was 46 at the time and wasn't really saggy yet, but the surgeon talked me into it. That breast has been tender every since and there is an ugly scar because he moved the nipple as well.

It was definitely not worth it; especially since the implant on the other side encapsulated and now sits almost in my armpit!  I am seriously thinking of having it removed. Just before the lumpectomy (3 years go) they found a tear in it. It is not a problem (they said) but what if it becomes one?
