How vain are you?

kay - I remember my chemo was in summer - and I learned hair keeps sweat from dripping in your eyes! and then when the eyebrow went, I had to wear a sweat band under my camp hat (hat said No Hair Day) - still worth it, as it was almost 7 years ago ;-)))
-
Kay, wanted to weigh in on mascara. Almay makes a gentle waterproof formula -- and there's no need to get special remover. You could use Jojoba oil, for example; that would work fine. Of course there's always the famous mascara in the pink and green tube -- forgot the name -- and that one's waterproof too. Natural mascara is not as waterproof, I've found. Haven't tried Clinique.
Melissa, how's the wash out going?
-
Hello ladies and love this thread. We should all find more time to primp; so good for the soul.
There are so many mascaras and I think I have tried them all. I have very sparse and light colored eyelashes, so I need to plump them up. Over the years, I have determined that the old tried and true Maybelline is the best. Love the one with the tiny cylindrical brush because it plumps up my post chem lashes very nicely. For removal, love, love love, the Neutrogena eye makeup remover wipes. Doesn't irritate my eyes and I can also use it to take off lipstick.
For making the post chemo eyebrows look terrific, I use the universal brow pencil from billiondollarbrows.com. They have lots of cool products. When I was in chemo and my brows left me, I used the brow buddy tool to define my brow shape. It was so helpful to create a natural looking brow. I used the brow pencil during chemo and loved it so much that I still use it to better define my brows now that they have grown back.
I hope all have a wonderful day full of primping. Take that last look in the mirror and take a pageant twirl, ladies.

My hair was always wavy and baby fine. Then, after chemo, I developed very curly and thick hair that I had to flat iron the snot out of to get it to lay flat. I, finally, gave up and got it cut super-short and have kept it that way. While the curl has simmered down some, my hair is still very alien to what I am used to. I like the super-short pixie. I'm going to keep it this way for awhile.
I bought one of those eyebrow power kits. SO much better than a brow pencil!! Much more natural-looking. I'm pleased. Thank you for suggesting it.
-
Selena, glad you like the brow powder! Once I started using a powder, I never used a pencil again. Now, if only I could find a foundation that makes me look 15 years younger!
-
bobo, scrubbing the haircolor down three times toned it down a lot & it looks much better.
My favorite mascara for the last few years has been the washable (not waterproof version) of Maybelline "The Falsies" . My eyelashes are really long but fine & not very thick. This goes on in nice thin coats, makes them super long but defined & not clumped.
-
Okay, NOW I gotta jump in!!! Mascara: use Maybelline with the pink/green tube. The new stuff it has doesn't smear down your face if you sweat or cry. I sweat a LOT and what it seems to do now when I wipe my eyes is just come off clean with just little flecks of black on my fingers. So no smear under my eyes. Also, I don't wash my mascara off every night as I think it's too rough on my eyes and my lashes! I let-it-ride for a couple of days, barely touching it up in between - mostly just the bottom lashes.
As for foundation, ANYTHING with "photo ready" or "light enhancing" kind of words is AMAZING!!!!!! The foundation actually has stuff in it that reflects light differently and makes your skin look flawless. And I mean flawless!!!!! Revlon has a "photo ready" product, but currently I'm using the Cover Girl one that Ellen advertises that has Oil of Olay whipped into it. Both products are either a cream or a liquid, I prefer the creams with the sponge applicator. Some come with sponges, some you have to use fingers (ugh, not so much likey). I have been complemented so MANY times at 55 using these products. So very glad I found them! I will touch up my forehead and nose with pressed powder through the day to stop a bit of shine, but I don't mind as that shows my skin is breathing. They reduce red, dark spots, dark circles (I use them under my eyes too and it's better than cover up sticks!!) and blend beautifully at the jaw and hairline. Do half your face and look in the mirror and you won't believe it!!! Do you see why I had to drop in now???? ehhehehehehehehe Hello ladies!!
-
Thanks barbe1958! I have a hard time finding a decent foundation because a lot of them turn orangey on me, or make me break out. How fair is that to be 57, have wrinkles and still get zits? Mother Nature apparently has a warped sense of humor. I've been using mineral powder foundations, but my skin is very dry right now and they make me look, well, dry. I'll take a look at foundations next time I'm out. Glad you joined in!
-
Barb!!!!! HELLO!!!!!! So good to see you! You brought up dark circles...
I don't wear foundation and, in summer, just a tiny bit of mineral powder to control shine. My question is, what about those undereye dark circles? Plus, the aesthetician who did my recent facial says that I could, also, benefit from the intense hydration of an eye cream now that I'm in my fifties.
Where to start?
-
I find the mineral products way TOO drying for me! And, I have oily skin!! So for a normal skin I'd think the mineral would be horridly drying!! On What Not To Wear one night, Carmindy told a lady to just use whatever product she uses as a foundation under her eyes for a more natural coverage. It was a bit of a learning curve as I'd used "bag cover-up" for about 35 years at that point!!!! Took some personal perseverance to not break out the cover-up, but I finally got used to the look. Now I'm not so freaked out without make-up. So when I don't use foundation I just use a powder to cover my under-eye area. It's subtle, but it's there. My dark circles are hereditary not medically caused. Make sure you aren't anemic as no treatment will benefit that except a build-up of iron in your system!
I find now if I experiment with the under eye cover stick again, that it doesn't look like me anymore. There are models making tons of money with my dark circles, so I'm just going to embrace them. I don't need to enhance the darkness like you see in some make-up applications, but by using the same foundation/powder all over it looks a lot more natural. I'd also heard many years ago that you are only supposed to cover the inner eye area with cover-up. But what if your dark circles are like mine!! Without using cover-up the bags aren't as noticeable either as they don't accentuate the wrinkles. I will use an under eye cream (Avon or something that came in a gift-with-purchase) very sporadically as the skin is now so thin and I don't like pulling on it so just gently daub it. I think that's what was bad about the cover-up stick, too - it pulled the skin.
-
I'm telling you, this is the greatest under eye concealer (plus treatment). It got editor's choice in several magazines.
-
MsPharoah - I also love the Neutrogena makeup remover wipes! Like you said, they don't irritate my eyes.
barbe1958 - Finally! I've been wanting to change out my makeup (right now using mineral powder) and kept thinking that you had recommended a product you liked... well, now I'm writing it down so I can go get some of Ellen's Cover Girl foundation!
-
I've used eye creams for years. My latest favorite is Airbrush by Dremu:
http://www.dermstore.com/product_Airbrush+-+45+Day...
I gave up on concealers. They too often end up in my creases and that draws attention to the area and just looks bad.
Barbe, some brands of minerals aren't as drying as others. I've tried more brands than I can remember. (Makeup is one of my obsessions.) Bare Escentuals dries me out horribly, but the one I buy from the online store, Lucy Minerals, does not. I wish they had a liquid or cream foundation. That would be perfect!

Melissa - I made a hyperlink out of your post

You're so vain, you probably thought this thread was about you.
Had to paraphrase some Carly. Couldn't help it.
Enjoyed reading all the unabashed vanity so far.
-
Thanks Sunflower.
Barbe, I can't wear most of those Photo Ready & similar foundations. They all have dimethicone in them which makes my face feel greasy like it is coated with silicone. Hard to wash off too. Even the mineral makeup feels greasy, but it can be hellishly hot & humid here, sometimes from April until December. Most of the time these days I just use a little concealer to even out tone & then some oil absorbing loose powder. I used to love a Neutrogena foundation in a compact that was a cream that dried to a matte finish, but they don't make it anymore, or if they do they changed the formula.
-
I'm going to get the Maybelline age rewind concealer on my way home from work today!! Can't wait to try it.
I have used a lot of expensive "old lady" face creams. During chemo I started using Nivea "Soft" on my face. It is so creamy and rich. Might not work for really oily skin, but if you have dry skin, you will like it. You can buy it in the trial size with a tiny $ commitment. I use it on my elbows and hands too and I recommended it to my daughter and she loves, loves, loves, Heavenly.

Elimar, you are making me pee my pants!
Hmm. When things got tough here I switched from dr hauschka to Caudalie moisturizers. They've got a whole sensitive and extra moisturizing line (sorry to tell you this, and I believe it's unrelated since it's a French company, but the packaging is a light pink). I actually called the Caudalie person (well, I did the live chatting) and told her about my situation, told her how dry I was, and sensitive, and she sent me a whole bunch of samples. So I got my moisturizer from there, and they have this serum -- it's an oil actually -- that's super-lovely. Swear by that. And they've got this thing called Divine Oil, you can put it on body or in hair (or on scalp). It smells fabulous.
Ms. Pharoah, you need to have your own radio show.

I reply to myself. It bears mentioning that all products listed above are natural (dr h is really natural), and there is no animal testing, no petrolatum, etc.

Hi there ladies! I have REALLY enjoyed reading this thread, it's so nice to "talk" about girlie things again! :~) I am actually trying to stay away from most of "the boards" as they tend to depress me and THAT can't be good for my skin/ hair/ physical well being, can it? But this fun board {and a couple of others!} are right up my alley!
Anyway, I see some of you talking about make-up being drying, and I never had that problem before, but I certainly have it now. I have been using Josie Maran's Argan Oil make-up and I LOVE it! I have the color match foundation, the powder foundation, the tinted moisturizer, the coconut water cheek coloring, one of the lipsticks and just the straight up argan oil and I love them all. It's crazy, here I am putting oil on my face, taking tamoxifen, just finished chemo, going through rads and I feel like my skin has honestly never looked better! Sorry if someone has mentioned this product line before, but I just thought I would mention it if you are struggling with dry skin. :~)
Now, I can just sit back and wait for my hair to get to an appropriate length/ time away from chemo for me to dye it because 35 and grey buzz cut is not really my jam, haha!
-
Hi TwinMamaHeather! I like this place too. I get tired of reading about cancer, and girlie stuff is so much more fun!
I recently bought the Josie Maran Argan Oil. I still have to use a moisturizer with it, but it really helps my skin feel better. Tell me about the Color Match foundation. Does it really match? Turn orange? Next time I'm at Sephora, I'm going to check out the rest of the line. Thanks for the recommendations!
-
bobo, Since my own vanity has me thinking I am such a wit, I am not at all surprised with your incontinence. Seriously, it is a good day if I can make someone smile or laugh.
-
Andrea ~ for me it actually matches! I have olive-ish skin, it's medium dark with "greenish" undertones, I guess that would be what makes it olive, haha.
It's crazy because it's actually white until I put in on my skin and then it just blends right in! Some crazy science going on there!
-
Heather, which color are you using? How is the coverage? I think I' ll try the light/medium. Next payday, I'm checking it out! Sephora, here I come!
-
I actually use the light medium, I am wondering if it will be dark enough when I am getting a bit more sun. :~)
-
I have foundations that look too a little too light come summer. I find that highlighting my face with a bronzer helps. Give it a try!
-
I don't know what I am worried about, it's not like I won't WANT to buy new make-up come summer. ;~)
Just out of curiosity, how long did those you you who color your hair wait until your colored after chemo {if you did it}? I finished chemo October 25th, I was a total q-ball until after thanksgiving and now I have about a half inch of hair, which is coming in really dark and GREY!!! I am not digging the salt and pepper at my age!

Just looking at an ad for a legal secretary job listing. Specifies "polished image" which is code for a lot of things, but you certainly don't see that in ads for male-dominated jobs.
Meanwhile, the partner she will be working for is bald, fat from drinking during two hour lunches and comes in in the morning for a little while wearing his golf clothes brfore leaving again.

The skin on my face, at the noble age of 57, is still quite oily despite menopause and 2 1/2 years on Arimidex. I use Boots #7 serums, night and day. During the day I use a thin layer of BB cream with bare minerals foundation. I'm still sporting a shine a few hours later so touch up with MAC powder. My body, on the other hand, has become the Sahara. I use Shea Moisture body wash and lotion (love their sulfate free shampoo and conditioner too). Paraben, sulfate and icky stuff free. It smells delicious as well. I also use coconut oil and Aquaphor on my hands and heels. As a natural curly girl, my hair is dry. I rarely wash it, but wet it and run conditioner through it everyday. I blow dry with a diffuser and gently pick out with my fingers or my retro Afro pick.
Have we talked about shaving/waxing or other hair removal yet? I think this merits some discussion. Me? Eyebrows are threaded, underarms shaved, leg hair has virtually disappeared (no idea why). Bikini area? Some selective waxing but not a Brazilian. Ah, vanity...

Somehow I knew we would get to waxing hahaha. But first the face.
I tried the Josie Muran actually went to Sephora looking for it- she did half my face with the tinted moisturizer and I did not like it- felt "pulley" and dry?? weird as I wanted the argan oil.
Next I tried Laura Mercier Foundation Primer-Radiance- WOW that stuff is great. I already have the tinted moisturizer (bisque) that I use alone in any hot climate (dry or humid) and on no-work days. Using that primer really gave me a glow and seemed to provide a bit more coverage with the tinted moisturizer- she said try it under my foundation (make-up forever HD) and I would love it- actually it was just meh. I hate feeling like full coverage and I think I am going to try the primer and tinted moisturizer and see if its enough for work. Not cheap but no Laura Mercier is but it does last quite a long time and I don't feel greasy or dry.
On to hair removal- eyebrows- thread or wax or really most of the time just pluck for clean-up too lazy and cheap to have a regular routine. Legs/underarms shave- much less hair growth post radiation thats for sure. Bikini- Brazilian wax every 4-5 weeks religiously. Its my one splurge and I won't give it up. Also I am really NOT interested in knowing that pubic hair can be grey too.....so if its out of sight its out of mind!
Love this thread
