Any Hummingbird Watchers Out There?

this one is my buddy...comes in every day
-
Well, it's a long time from hummingbird season where I live. It's about 19º outside right now and blowing to beat the band. When I last looked, there was about six inches or more snow on the ground. We may get up to 14" by the time the night is over. I look at the feeders I do have outside for the local birds and dream about when the hummers might be coming back. Lucky you guys who have them year round!
-
I just went outside and my buddy was watching me although I couldn't see him...

up close and personal

What a beauty Lisa!
-
He is .I think he is an Anna's hummer
-
I saw this beauty this morning at the zoo
-
SoCalLisa - how beautiful!
I finally figured out that all our hummers are Annas. They are the only ones who live here year round, and do not migrate.
Luckily, it was 78 here today.
I think the most I've seen on the front porch feeders at one time was a dozen or so. They love my porch, and I've got the hummer poop to prove it!
-
I think it is called a white necked jacobin
-
SoCalLisa,
We saw him too! Later on Friday I was at the zoo with Trevor and his friend and his mom and we only had an hour at the zoo, and we went in the hummingbird house and saw that same little guy. so beautiful!!,
Just missed you by a few hours at the zoo!
-
wow. I was there til about 11:30..I love that enclosure
I talked to the keeper about that violet eared hummer. He was upset he had died. But told me this one was a new acquisition
-
SoCalLisa, I am a birder because of my son. He has loved birds since he was 2 and wore out a birding book I had bought for my husband. It has been so much fun with him, when we travel we look for birds. Of course we have so many hummers here, and choose plants for our garden for the birds.
We love the zoo and it's many birds too. We are so lucky to be close to it.

I see that ruby throats have been spotted in Louisiana and the Florida panhandle. Hooray!
-
The old timers believe that hummers arrive on Mother's Day in the North Country!
-
Teka: That photo is amazing, but I chuckled to myself as your kitty almost appears to be looking at it too and licking her lips
SoCallLisa: Thank you so much for these wonderful photos. We have hummers all summer , but our winters are just too long. They become so tame in the summer that they sip from their feeders an inch from our heads and we can feel their wings. They are very territorial and "buzz" our cockatoo when she is outside with us. Blanche gets so annoyed and it is so funny to watch them interact. I bet they could scare off a lizard. We rescued Blanche 7 years ago and although it is not quite the same as observing birds in the wild, we have been blessed to have the opportunity to form a bond with another species. She was wild, as she is one of the last captured birds from New Guinea. We think she is about as old as us . . .50's. We let her go free outside and she stays with us and never attempts to fly away. May have broke a wing years ago, who knows. But for now, she prefers to stay with us and just let those pesky hummers fly around her.

TB90,
