How vain are you?

Hi all
I have been off spending the weekend in Newport Beach so missed the posts.
First off- I have no idea why my son can eat some gluten things and have celiac- possibly because the celiac happened in conjunction with his diabetes as an auto-immune thing? If he over does it he pays with several trips to the bathroom and stomach cramps- usually this happens with good NY bagels with that extra-high gluten flour hahaha.
I wonder about the BB tinted moisturizer- I have the Laura Mercier which I love for summer or any trips to hot/humid climes but I don't seem to get any real coverage versus just sort of evening out.
Last about the allergies- I had a good friend tell me you have to ingest >>read eat local honey and if you do you can build up some natural immunity to all the pollens and allergens in the area where you live. I have done this for years and I think it makes a world of difference because of course the local honey is made from all the pollens flying through the air in your geography. If you go to farmers markets and such you can usually find a local honey source.

He trained as a short order cook?!? What is his PhD in?
Mardibra... here's another pic of my late Malcolm. Man! Just looking at these pictures makes me miss him so much... He was a foundling; appeared on my front porch one night in November - I think it was 1992? 1993? It was a brutally cold night and he was really tiny, hungry and sick. Couldn't leave him out there. Had him for nearly 19 years. He was an Old Soul.

Selena, here ya go:
"Null says he holds an associate degree in business administration from Mountain State College in West Virginia, a bachelor's degree from Thomas A. Edison State College in New Jersey, and a PhD in human nutrition and public health sciences from The Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Two papers he co-authored during the early 1980s identified him as Gary Null, M.S," but I have seen no information about the source of that credential.
Edison State is a "nontraditional" school with neither campus nor courses. It is accredited but awards accredited bachelor's degrees based on career experience, equivalency exams, and courses taken at other schools.
[...]
The Union Institute is also accredited, but its degree requirements and standards for health-related doctoral degrees differ greatly from those of most traditional universities. Students design their own program, form and chair their own doctoral committee, and are required to attend only an introductory colloquium and a few interdisciplinary seminars. Null's thesis, entitled "A Study of Psychological and Physiological Effects of Caffeine on Human Health," was approved in in August 1989. The approval document states that his PhD committee was composed of a "core faculty member," three "adjunct professors," two "peers," and a "second core reader." The "core faculty member," Peter Fenner, was a well-credentialed academician whose expertise (in geologic sciences) was not related to Null's topic. One of the three "adjunct professors" was Martin Feldman, MD, a "complementary" physician (and "clinical ecologist") who has pinch-hit for Null as a radio host, and helped develop some of Null's books and supplement formulations. The other two were Philip J. Hodes and Elayne Kahn. When I asked a school official about their background or location, he replied that information was in storage and was too difficult to obtain. In 2005, I located mention of "Dr. Philip Jay Hodes, Ph.D, Ed.D., Practitioner Holistic, Health Detoxification & Orthomolecular Nutritionist, Consultant" on a Web site that sells "natural tropical herbal medicines." [7] I also discovered that Elayne Kahn is a psychologist in New York City who coauthored a book with Null that was published in 1976 [8]." http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/null...
I have noticed that quacks with Ph.Ds usually have them from outfits like the ones in the above.

Oh, Selena, that is one gorgeous feline creature, wise, wise, wise. He knew where to go when he found you...
I have heard the virtues of local honey, definitely trying it this year.
COLD. that's the only word, tho the weather is using frightening ones like frigid, dangerous, hibernating sounds like a good idea....
-
What the hell is an "orthomolecular nutritionist"????
Ah. So not an academic PhD then. That explains a lot.
-
Sorry to butt in here, you can be gluten intolerant and not have celiac. There are specific tests for celiac.
-
spookiesmom - YES YES YES YES - there is such a range of reactions to gluten. Several articles online now about how the WHITE's change so quickly to sugar, and effect many with pre diabetes. I've noticed feeling SO much better not having any of the 5 Whites: flour, rice, bread, pasta, sugar.
There is now an accumulation of evidence stopping gluten has helped reduce joint pain in so many women taking AI's.
-
Just love Malcolm! He does look like an old soul.
In defense of Larry/Gary, while his "degrees" are probably worthless, you know he must have learned a butt load about nutrition as a short order cook!

Yorkie,

Have I mentioned how much I love this thread?
Ohhh... Malcom.... kitty love....
-
and such beautiful eyes.
-
I like that cat- lots of personality just looking out at you!! Thanks for sharing Selena
I am not quite sure how you can go from BS to PhD without a masters- sounds a little sketchy because a masters is usually a pre-requisite to a doctoral program (legit ones anyway). There is a lot of accredited and respected on-line education now but not back then....hmmm
-
tee, hee...hmmmmmm, indeed....

I have lost track of this thread for several pages! Here's my two cents:
Shellac is a brand of gel manicure. It can only be cured under a UV lamp, whereas most of the newer brands can be cured under LED lamps. Shellac was one of the earliest gel polishes.
Tans? I'm usually pale and happy but got a spray tan for dd's wedding. I had a "custom" job meaning it was sprayed by hand by a nice lady who did contouring and was able to go lighter/darker in some areas for a more natural look. Like human airbrushing. Nice, but it smells metallic to me as do all self tanners.
Mardibra- cute pup!
Cats? I 'm so allergic that I sneeze during cat food commercials
Eyebrows- I get mine threaded a few times a year. Lots of grey coming in but I swear by Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel.
Larry/Gary? What else can I say. The only person more bizarre is Mike Adams, the health ranger (he's a Holocaust denier in addition to his um, other pursuits)
Good to catch up with you all!
Caryn

I love gel nails. I get them done at a salon, however, as I do not trust my somewhat shaky hands to put it, or any polish, on.

Well, last night I had a mini-spa: pedicure and facial. I was so relaxed when I left the spa, I just about slithered to the car. Although I had no idea before I went, this spa specialises in "natural" treatments, i.e., my facial was primarily steam, cucumber eye slices, face and scalp massage (oh, lord!), a sea salt exfoliation and a honey mask. I haven't quite bought into the whole parabens issue (my research has shown that we eat more parabens in our food than we'd ever metabolise from beauty products), so if they had used fancy-schmancy products with parabens, it wouldn't have concerned me. But this was a nice surprise. I'm all for "natural" as long as people don't make ridiculous claims to what "natural" can achieve. And, it means, that I can replicate the experience at home without having to spend a fortune.
The pedicure consisted of a milk- and honey foot bath, a sea-salt exfoliation, and foot massage (#blissfulwriggle) and polish. I chose a lovely toasty-almond colour. While my toes were drying, I got a hand massage (absolutely drool-worthy given that - in this bitter cold - my arthritic knuckles have been swollen and sore) that left me limp. Yes, I must do this sort of thing more often rather than my usual twice- or three times yearly.
My fingernails look a bit better. The last manicure I had, the aethestician worked really hard, shaping and buffing, and the ridges are not quite as pronounced. And I've been using Burt's Bees lemon cutical cream on the nails to keep them moistured and it seems to be working. No so many splits and peels in the last few weeks. OoooRAH!
-
Selena, sounds heavenly! I get a facial, but not as fancy as the one you described, about every other month. My esthetician uses Image products, which are paraben free. I think most of the better product lines are paraben free now, but really don't know if it is such a huge concern. I'm getting new gel on today and think I'm going for a wine/burgendy color.
-
Selena, your spa day sounded fab! So relaxing! Your Malcolm was a gorgeous boy. So regal looking. I just wanted to share a picture of the queen of our house, Hermione. She is three and a half years old and quite a prissy girl. lol!
-
Amy, what a doll!
-
Aw! Hermione! What a great name! And doesn't she look all duchess-y.
Yorkie... I researched the whole parabens issue for months, then I researched several cosmetics companies; those who use parabens and those who don't. I found one site - damned if I can remember which one - that didn't use parabens in their products, but admitted on the websight that, while they were convinced that parabens were completely safe, they were providing products without parabans because of the prevailing public perception that they are not. I found it interesting that a parabens-free company was publicly admitting that, in essence, they were only paraben-free in order to reach a wider market.
So while using products with parabens doesn't overly concern me, my personal preference is for simple products that - if I wish - I can make at home for myself. I mean, the aesthetician literally scooped warm honey out of a bowl and put it on my face, cut cucumber slices for my eyes, and had a bowl of sea-salt which she mixed with a bit of milk. It doesn't get any more basic than that.
Enjoy your manicure!

SPRAY TAN! I did it! And sooo didn't take photos because I gained 12 lbs during chemo! Yuck! Anyway it looks great! I am super happy I did it and now I am wondering why I never have before! Way easier than dealing with the tanning beds or sitting at the stupid beach all day!
She went medium on me and I think that was enough. Just a FYI, I went to The Tannery in Newport Beach if there are any Orange County people on here. She was great!
-
Selena, that sounds about right. If something keeps getting publically touted as BAD companies have to eliminate it to keep customers, regardless of the science. Maybe this is a case of mass hysteria.
-
Thanks ladies. Hermione is my baby. I know in her own little cat way she loves me. I just wish she was a bit more cuddly. ☺️
I'm finally watching part 3 of Downton Abbey, series 4, and oh my! I'm in love with Mary's dress! The scene in which Tony comes to Downton to propose to Mary. ❤️ it! BEST.SHOW.EVER. Mary has the most gorgeous dresses.
-
I got Seasons 1, 2 and 3 for Christmas and have worked my way about half-way through Season 1. I know, basically, what's been happening on the the show, but - since it was aired late here - I never got a chance to watch it, although I kept up with the storyline. Now, I'm WALLOWING in gorgeous dresses, gorgeous hair, gorgeous jewellry, gorgeous table settings, wonderful manners and I drool everytime I see Lady Mary riding side saddle. I've always wanted to learn to ride side-saddle.
I LOVE riding habits...
-
I went paraben and petro chemical free immediately after diagnosis. I'm very careful about what I put on and in my body now. Maybe a little too careful. The only thing I haven't really given up on is my hair color and my Yuko straightening. After struggling for years with curly, unruly hair I decided several years ago to permanently straighten it. Best decision ever. Best money spent. Also must keep those grays away! lol!
-
Oh no! Selena! Apologies for the spoiler! Will keep my mouth shut from now on about DA, except in discussing clothes, hair, or makep.
-
Amy ... I've become a compulsive label-reader now and, for the most part, tend to avoid products (and food) that has a list of ingredients a mile long, most of which I can't pronounce. I prefer simple, basic and natural, which means I end up not using too many products that have parabens in them, but if there is something out there I am interesting in trying, having parabens on the label won't deter me from trying it. About a year ago, I just reached a point where I accepted I simply couldn't micro-manage everything and embraced moderation.
I still colour my hair too. I'm a natural blond, but I'm always switching from blond to brunette to red and back again. I'm interested in trying the new colours that use oil instead of amonia... anybody tried those?
Don't worry about spoilers!!! I pretty much know what's been going on all along, I just haven't actually seen it myself. And, I must admit, PURE. EYE. CANDY.
-
OK, I'll admit it - I'm getting very BORED with downton abby...feel they're really scratching bottom for "story lines" - but I'm LOVING the ew Sherlock ( he wasn't dead, we knew that!!)
-
I'm watching Sherlock right now!
