Beebop. Good idea to call. My incisions looked red at one point, but it was just part of my healing process. Hope that is the same for you.
Ridley
-
actually beebop....I don't think I'd panic or assume infection. Of course, I can't see your bb....
You said it was black and now is red....did a scab come off? Some newly revealed tissue in scenarios like that can look very red and angry. If you have no fever, no drainage, and the redness isn't spreading outwards from the site....you're likely just healing.
Lots of incisions look neat and thin and tidy in the early days, then seem to look worse as time passes, to eventually settle down again. Healing has many faces, and takes much longer than we ever imagine. Hope you find this is the case for you. {{X}}.
-
nihahi- it is still black but just some redness around the edges. It actually looks a little less red than it did this morning. My hubby is a nurse and he thinks it can wait until tomorrow. He suggests cleaning it and putting some bacitracin on it. That is his cure for everything, lol.
-
I agree with hubby the nurse.....lots of scabs get reddish borders, as they heal. Have a good day!!!!!!! Eat protein !
-
Beebop - my scars had small black crusty areas, they are scabs which came off and the skin underneath is pinkish, a little red but not angry red. I think this is normal, if you feel uneasy get it checked out!
I got pissed today and called the oncology clinic and left a not so nice message as they didnt have the decency to call me back last week when I left a message and my former oncologist has had my path report in his hands since last Wednesday. Fifteen minutes after I left the message someone called me back and said oh we have an appointment for you next Wednesday, Jan 29/14 at 4:00 pm.

curlylocks.............TOWANDA...!!!!
-
curly-you are on the DIEP Facebook page, right? I just saw your post there
So frustrating when you don't get the call back. Do you know what stage you are this time?
-
curly- get em girl!
Good luck to all the girls gking this week! What diep facebook page?
I just had my drains removed and ahhhhhhhhhhh it feels so good! I am having some naussau and have thown up twice in the past twenty four hours but my pain is minimal now.
-
lahela, I put "stage 2" on 3/3. Is that okay?
Ladies, if anyone needs added to the surgery list over the next few weeks, PM me so I'm sure to not miss anyone. My surgery is Friday, so I will be out of commission for awhile. Ugh! Surgery in 4 days. Feels painful just to see it in print here.
-
Good luck to all of you ladies having surgery this week. I will pray for you.
JMB5: Im especially interested in your outcome as you have DCIS Grade 2 like I did. Best of luck to you:)
-
Yes Beebop I am on the private DIEP Facebook page...haven't had scans yet as this cancer is invasive. For now it is 1cm invasive Triple negative tumour..so would be stage 1.
JMb - you got this girl!
Thinking positive thoughts for all the ladies having surgery this week!
Michele
-
Sweet, why the nausea? From the pain meds? Glad you got the drains pulled. Yeh!!!!!
JMB, no freaking out! It's all good. You will be on the other side of this soon, and will do great. Thanks for being such a great "record keeper." Don't worry about us while you are in the first few weeks of recovery. Just concentrate on healing!!!!! Adding dates to the list can wait a bit. Of course, we will be here when you wake up, and Wilbur let's you give us updates.
Curly, so glad they got back to you. Baby steps. It such a shame that even when we are at our most stressed, and need things to run smoothly we still have to fight our way through the system.
-
Curly< how does one "join" the private DIEP FB page?
-
feeling extremely frustrated!! I have 2 teenagers that are self absorbed & have really been uncooperative recently. I am tired of them constantly challenging me and the arguments that ensue. I guess I am feeling sorry for myself right now, that I should have to deal with their BS when I have my surgery on fri, that I am worried about. I expect more compassion & help from them. My DH is wonderful with everything, but is on a business trip this week. Gets back late Thursday night, surgery is fri morning. It was planned this way so now he won't need to travel for several weeks & will work from home.

Hello fellow BC SURVIVORS,
I had Bilate BX November 2012, with immediate expander placement, which unfortunately was placed over the muscle (for easier surgery and recovery and no ghost boobs .. according to PS). I have since discovered this was not a wise decision. But, onto the subject.
I live in Cal (east bay) have Kaiser Permanente insurance and luckily Blue Cross as well. I have seen Dr Ho @ Santa Clara Kaiser for DIEP reconstruction as I am giving up these painful expanders and future implants. I was a C cup before surgery and he says I have enough fat for a B cup, but may need to take some muscle, making it a combination free DIEP/SIEA. He does not want to order any CT, abdominal or chest as he says it only shows him the arteries and not the veins. A five day hospital stay with four drains is expected. This surgery will be paid 100% by Kaiser insurance.
Next week I have an appointment/consultation with Dr Gordon Lee at Stanford. Blue Cross will pay 80% of costs, and I will have to pick-up the rest. I am unsure of the cost currently.
I have done extensive research on the procedure, and along with reading all your posts (thank you) I am comfortable with my decision to move forward with a DIEP procedure. So what I would like to know is does anyone know of either of these docs? (Dr Ho @ Kaiser Santa Clara or Dr Lee @ Stanford). I hear a lot of folks mention NOLA and Dr Furman?, but I do not know where he is, or if I want to think of the added expense of traveling, not to mention flying soon after surgery.
Any feed back is appreciated.
Blessings to all for speedy recoveries and staying cancer free.
Mary

Mary, NOLA is/has been the Gold Standard in free flap procedures for years.....however, there are MANY well-qualified PS who now perform DIEP all over the US, Canada....well, the world. I am a BMX/immediate Recon /DIEP, and my PS. is in Portland, Oregon. You probably have access to some top DIEP surgeons in the Bay Area, no need to travel to NOLA....you can ask each of them for patients you can talk to, and ask to see photos of their work, as well. I know there are ladies who have had theirs done in the SF area, you may want to look at the DIEP 2013 thread, at the names, and locations, and PM them, if no one answers you. Best of luck in your recon journey.

donna- I hear ya, I have twin thirteen year olds that seem clueless or inconvienced when I ask for help. Today I lost it and sent them on the ever lovin mother of guilt trip. dh asked them if I had cleaned when he got ome because he knows they wont unless made to. They were like "no dad, mom made us feel bad so we did it". LOL
Goldie- I dunno but I feel loads better once I get sick. Im keeping an eye on my temp because I feel hot. I was 99.5 just a bit ago but I have taken two ibruprophan. I am also noticing how sore my tummy muscles are now that the drain pain is gone. Its not bad though, just feels like a heavy workout day.
-
Donna - no matter what kind of self absorbed idiots teenagers can be, I absolutely swear they will grow out of it. Now to your current challenge - might it be possible that they are a bit scared underneath and using that teenage bravado inappropriately? Just don't worry about it. Your DH will be home on Thursday and then he will be in charge of taming them before your return. Be sure to put him in charge of that task. Something about fathers putting the fear into them. Only 4 more sleeps till you get new boobs!
Mary - although I had the abdominal CT it only showed the arteries. Your doc is right, it depends on the timing of the contrast and the movement of the machine. My doc in NOLA ended up using a portable ultrasound and quickly found exactly what she needed just before surgery. Leaving the cost issues aside, besides seeing pictures you need to be sure that your doctor is preforming DIEP regularly (at least 10 a month and hopefully more). You should also ask what other flap procedures they commonly preform - GAP or PAP? If something should happen to one of the DIEP flaps (rare, but it does happen), you want to be sure that they have the skills to use fat from another part of the body to replace the lost flap (hips or thighs). Some doctors can also preform stacked flap procedures to give you a larger cup size (stacking a diep and a gap). Also ask about follow-up - who you will speak to if you have questions. If something comes up, who can you send a photo to for a quick answer. If a resident is in the room, will he/she be observing or participating.
If I remember correctly, the big daddy of microsurgery was from SF - a Dr. Buncke. My surgeon did her fellowship through the Buncke Clinic. They turn out wonderful surgeons so that might give you a good lead.

Blue willows. I highly recommend Mayo also. They are maybe 10+ miles north of I-90. Couple hours from you probably. Worth checking out. Good luck.

Bluewillow I highly recommend Mayo and they are nationally known with a stellar reputation. They are maybe 10 or so miles north of I-90 and probably a couple hours from you.
If you are a fan of Grey's Anatomy, it's the place Christina went to after she passed her boards. However, the docs are not hayseeds like they were portrayed in the show.
Sorry for all the deleted posts, girls. My computer is stuttering.

My mother lives in Madison WI and wanted me to check out the surgeons who do diep at UW Madison. I said no way, they are not as experienced as surgeons in NYC where I live. However, if I were still back in Wisconsin I'd go to the Mayo Clinic - hands down. There is also a good PS surgeon who is experienced with diep procedures in Milwaukee. I don't recall the name (Dr Henri maybe). Google diep surgeons in Milwaukee and he'll come up. Good luck sista! (I was born/raised in Madison
.
-
bluewillows-Milwaukee PS is Hijjawi (not Henri). I've read good reviews. Also, do a search across the this breast reconstruction forum using his name and see if he comes up.

thank you so much ladies for the info. I know of a younger woman about 36 i think that had a total fail with a tram out of Madison. Not sure who the dr. was....She was going through cancer same time as i was in 2011. Ive tried several times to find out from her mother how it all turned out but never get an email back. I think ive seen the name Hijjawi on a different post here...i will check into him and the Mayo... We LOVE Greys...not sure why i didnt realize that was in MN.
OK so any ladies in my neck of the woods that have went to Mayo please pm me and let me know who gave you good results there please.

Donna, all teenager's are the same way. It's the nature of the beast. Sometimes I cry when I think about how awful I was when my own mom had breast cancer. it's not that I didn't care, but I didn't understand how much she needed me to just be there with her sometimes. I now cherish the time I did spend with her, but the guilt I have now is awful. But, I wasn't doing it intentionally, nor did I realize I was even doing it. So, your kids love you, but not much is going to rock their world unless it has something to do with them. And, like Marty said, they will not be like that forever, unfortunately this is happening to you when they are in the throws of self absorbed behavior.
I just heard some wonderful things about my surgeon. I am getting excited.
-
jmb, thanks for adding me. All the best for Friday and don't worry about a thing!
Donna, I wish I had something useful to say. When mine get in that defiant state, I tell myself that at least they're not stealing cars or taking drugs... doesn't really work, but it gets so tiring always having to butt heads with them! Marty, exactly when do they grow out of it? My eldest is nearly 23! LOL! -
Lahela - mine is almost 26, but he had some personal challenges that he has over come beautifully. Definitely made him stronger. I will never forget talking to him a day after one of my Stage 2's. When I answered the phone I said "Hey, baby, how are you". His response was "Better question is how are you". That made it all worthwhile. We always told him that if he survived his teen years he was going to make a terrific adult.

Well I was up in a chair today. I should go to a room tomorrow. Home on Thursday. Everything is good. Surgery only took 5 hours. The worst thing was the nausea when I woke up.
-
how is the belly button beehop?
Congrats on the drain removal sweet. Hope you are feeling better.
Donna- I hear you on the offspring. My twins will be 21. Sometimes the only way to get them moving and helping is to totally go bat sh@t crazy. Not my proudest moments but a mom can only take so much sometimes. Try not to stress too much the next few days.
Beck- good to hear from you. Getting to the chair is a big step! Hope the nausea is gone.
-
beck - glad things went well. Did you have a delayed uni? Nausea does stink! Did they give you the patch behind your ear?
Lucy - mine are twins too - 18. I have been popping more ativan because of them. Right now being in the hospital for 5 days, with no one arguing with me, is sounding like a vacation!
