I had my lumpectomy on Thursday, so everyone is cooking for me!

My sister brought chicken a la king over puff pastry shells. My co-workers brought lasagna, bread, salad, wine and the all time best pumpkin bars. My dad is bringing meatloaf and mac & cheese today. Tomorrow, my MIL is bringing wild rice and chicken soup. I've got them timed perfectly and I'm am certainly going to milk it this time around!

Thanks for all the good wishes, everything went well. Still waiting to exhale until I get the final pathology.  Gina

Yeah Gina! So glad I t went well. Gee. I feel cheated. You had a lx and get a weeks worth of dinners? I had a BMX and exactly 1 dinner was made for me. AND I HAVE 7 sibs! LOL ok so only 6 live in the state. That brother gets a pass. Although I did get the weeks worth of frozen dinners my daughter had sent. Those were good. LOL.  No really I am glad you don't have to cook. It wonderful to be taken care of like that! LOL

Last night I just had a Flatiron steak cooked in my caster on pan. Mashed Potatos. That's it. But it was done rare. Yum.

    Much love.

Tonight is soup, salad and breadsticks, in the style of olive garden (minestrone and garlic breadsticks.) I couldn't help it, I haven't baked anything in 5 days.

Looks yummy Nancy. We had a deli chicken, shrimp (steamed in the store) and a coleslaw/Ramen noodle salad. Odd combo but good. The deli chicken and shrimps were special grand reopening sales. DH has decided he doesn't like seafood period and these were actually pretty good. Oh well, not a big deal. We skipped going to Mex Food tonight. Having steaks on grill tomorrow and some extra BBQ chicken pieces for later in week. We may cluck soon.

Gina - sounds like you have the food orders down to a T. Yummy. Hoping path report is great.

Nance, I don't know why, but your picture had me giggling. The way you do when you know you shouldn't and can't stop. I don't even know why! It may be possible I'm losing my mind.

    They really do  look good.

Gina I hope you exhale with relief.  The waiting is the hardest part.

Here is a recipe. They put salmon in everything here. I keep wanting to rush over and say "stop! don't touch that salmon! Don't cover it with cream cheese!  It's too precious! " But there is a lot here and it's in at least 4-5 dishes at every pot luck

Here's a nice one from everything salmon. a store that tourists buy a lot of fish from in the summer

Classic Smoked Salmon Appetizer Back to Top
    8 oz. Alaska smoked salmon
    Herbed cream cheese*
12 slices cocktail-size rye or pumpernickel bread**
1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
    3 Tbsp. capers
    Lemon slices
    Fresh dill sprigs

Arrange smoked salmon, small bowl of Herbed Cream Cheese and bread on     medium
-sized serving platter. Garnish with red onion, capers, lemon slices and dill.
    Makes 6 servings.
        * Herbed cream cheese    Beat together until smooth 8 ounces softened cream cheese,
2 tablespoons milk, 1     teaspoon each lemon juice and dill weed, and 4-5 drops bottled
    hot pepper sauce.
** Six split mini-sized bagels can be substituted

I hope everyone has a nice three day weekend, especially those who work.

Bedo that sounds pretty good. We like to smoke some of the salmon we catch here.its a hot smoke not like lox. Looks cooked but tastes smoked. And I bet I know what you were thinking about the bread sticks, naughty! LOL

Joyce glad to see you again. And I hope you have a great time with Michelle's DH.

Nancy I made a brick in my new mixer. Sigh. I knew it wasn't right..should never have baked it. LOL.  I tried a second rise it was still not good. Then I looked at the comments on the King Arthur website. It wasn't me! LOL.  Something was messed up but I thought I'd forgotten how it should feel. Nope I was right. So tossed it. Went to my old recipe. It's yummy! What do you think? It's the pumpkin bread I used to make in my Bread maker. It could have used a bit more of a rise though cause I used some whole wheat flour. But it tastes great. Will be good for ham and cheese sandwiches.

    Much love to all.

OK, Nance, twisted comment or not.....your bread is definitely food porn in the most realistic way! ;)

Joyce, good to see your post. I know it will be comforting for Rick to spend some time with you and DH... and for you to spend time sharing memories with him. He is a dear man. So sorry he (and you!) has had to cope with such a profound loss.

    Lol!!

You all are cracking me up!  Just the fact that you all are making your own bread has me in awe!

    Nancy,

The breadsticks gave me a bit of a giggle (my inner child coming out... and Debbie you were not slone...lol)!  I expect that they were really good!

    Monica,

Sorry to hear about your 'brick'!  The pumpkin bread sounds really good and paired with ham and cheese for a sandwich?  Yum!

Had homemade black beans and rice with a pork roast cooked in the crockpot. nBeans and rice were good as always... The pork, meh, not so much!

So good to see your post Tazzy....:)

Last night DH and I attended a comedy night fundraiser put on by a local town group. The comedians were a riot and we laughed a lot! The food was pretty basic, chicken salad roll ups, (which I never eat due to my weird celery allergy), barbecued chicken tenders, some chinese eggrolls and fried rice. It was a mix of many of the food vendor donations.....the chocolaty desserts were better, so I departed from my healthy eating effort and had two!

Today, I made a big pot of kale soup, which has a very balsamic flavor to it, since when I went to add a splash of balsamic vinegar to it, I accidentally poured way too much in. Oy! Thus the distinctive flavor! As usual, DH was totally fine with it. I also made a crabmeat, broccoli, mushroom quiche tonight since that whole milk I had leftover from the kids' visit was burning a hole in my culinary psyche. Turned out well....but quiche is yet another departure from my current eating habits. Oh well, there is always tomorrow. ;)

    Monica, lovely loaves!

I rarely ever cook steaks at home, but local grocery had the natural grass fed beef on special, so got two bone in ribeyes and did them on the grill.  They were absolutely delicious...so tender they melted in your mouth!  I only ate half of mine they were so large (saved the rest) They were served with a lettuce wedge and baked potato.  Oh...and a nice glass of red wine to accompany.  As good as any meal at an expensive steakhouse.

I've been making dishes using the gluten free pasta.  You actually can't tell the difference and we don't feel as bloated after eating.  BF loves pasta with meat sauce or meatballs, so I have substituted turkey for burger and he doesn't know the difference...lol....as long as I spice it up.  Yesterday I made him turkey chili for the big game day and he loved it.  Me...I went for my facial and massage...using my gift certificate that I got for Christmas.  It was heavenly.

Boy we certainly are a desperate group....ooogling the breadsticks!  LOL

Wouldn't have thought of grilled cheese on the pumpkin bread, hmmmm, probably very yummy, and the loaf looks perfect to me.

Did a lasagna last night, mainly for the DH, I could live without it.  Had a big side salad, so that was my dinner.

Today I am feeling like a simple baked chicken, bone in, all the parts. Rice and vege on the side.

Last night was a Provencal chicken stew that turned out quite good. Dh thought it was fantastic and stood at the stove eating the last of the sauce and chicken bits with a spoon lol! Looks like I'll have to make that one again.

Tonight is dan dan noodles with an Asian cucumber salad.

Off to the gym today then back to make a loaf of sandwich bread for leftover meatloaf sandwiches.

BBQd some Tbones found in freezer. OK but tough. Glad I did not pay full price for them. Have leftovers for my lunch. Also did some chicken thighs/legs with a coconut/mango sauce from Central Market. I have to put them back on again in oven as I don't think they got done enough. Should have left the sauce till a bit later in cooking, that and they were straight out of refrig. Maybe should have warmed them up just a bit. So tonight is leftover night - chicken, deli chicken, steak and I'll make something to go with them. Oh and the leftover shrimp that DH has decided he does not like. Did I mention he was raised in CA and was/is spoiled for fish? I will eat just about any kind. I even got him nice Cross/Blackwell cocktail sauce for them.

Humm - maybe I can freeze the shrimps and make them back into something? Any suggestions? Prob. have 1-1.5 cups whole and pretty big ones - Lacey the quiche caught my eye but don't think DH will eat it. Not sure why - loves eggs, crust, - think it's a texture thing.

Nancy - mmm - leftover meatloaf. Think I have some of that too. Can you say I need to clean out the freezer which is once again full to the top? What goes in a Provencal chicken stew?

Luv, not much, here's the recipe:

    http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Proven-al-Chicken-Stew-237289

I added 4 cloves of garlic and a tablespoon of herbs de Provence, which I highly recommend. Also, I cooked it in a Dutch oven and not the slow cooker (which I will try next time.)

    Nancy,

Thanks for the link to the chicken recipe.  Was going to ask for it but Luv beat me to it...lol!  Sounds really good and is going on my list to try soon maybe even this week.  There's some really great prices on chicken this week!

OO - I missed that Nancy posted the recipe. Thanks Seaside and thanks Nancy. What is with the prices of chicken? We had Pilgrims Pride (Texas brand I think) bags of thigh/legs for 39 cents a pound. I had a $3 super shopper coupon so my chicken cost me 12 cents. They were 8# bags and pretty nice, not too much fat. My freezer is overstocked. I need to process turkey carcass and the deli chicken one but haven't and trash day is tomorrow. Guess they will wait until next week. Wish I had them done since cold (relative) is visiting again Thur/Fri. Maybe chili instead - have 2# ground beef in freezer.

Gosh I didn't read the recipe. Sounds like a good use for that whole chicken languishing deep in bottom of freezer. Hmm.

I made a coleslaw/ramen noodle dish trying to use up some dry roasted peanuts we have. They are pretty bad to eat out of hand but OK in dish. I put the olive oil in a bowl and was shocked it was sooo green. Prob. tells you the stuff I was buying was not so hot. Of course I could always feed the peanuts to the goats that is if they don't eat my fingers off in the process. I have a Playskool sandbox minus the lid I dump things in for them. Also a fav. napping place. Might have to do it that way - that's how they get the wilted salad mixes. Silly goats would not eat it for a long time.

I have to go to Ft. Worth on Wed. for mammo - 2 year check. I changed appt to 8:15 am - DH thinks I'm crazy. But I'm having a no shopping attack. I see TJs coming - I did not go in there over Christmas holidays - spent enough at Central Mkt. to cover it instead lol. So Wed. may be a long day or maybe not depending on how checkbook holds out.

Nancy - Italian groceries are very uncommon in Texas at least FW. I know of a middle Eastern one very tiny but more or a lunch hangout than grocery. Even on the west side of FW not a good Oriental grocery which I would dearly love. Midcities area much more common.

luv - I sometimes have cooked shrimp that I need to use and I usually sauté some veggies - whatever I have on hand - red onion, a pepper (red, green or yellow) maybe some zucchini, etc. until they are tender but not overcooked.  I will add red pepper flakes, or a sweet and sour sauce (ketchup, chili sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, vinegar, Worchestershire), or pesto, and then stir in the shrimp at the last minute just to warm them through since they are already cooked.  I serve it over rice or angel hair pasta - it is a good quick dinner and has everything in one dish.

It's been awhile since I posted.  I check here a couple of times a day with my phone--it's easy to read, but difficult to type, so I just read.

Tonight, dinner is going to be something very simple...Sharon is fighting a cold so I'll probably do a "hot and cold" thing and let her choose whatever feels the best to her throat.  Some BBQ chicken and, since we have lots of grapes, apples, bananas, pears, apricots and such, a nice cold fruit salad.  We have just enough sourdough bread left for the meal, so we should be in good shape.  I *might* even bake some potatoes on the grill while the chicken is cooking.  There is no point wasting the 70F degree weather!

I hope everyone is busy enjoying themselves.

Boy Eric, what I wouldn't give for 70 degrees. The high here today was 13, 10 on Thursday. I know the northeast folks are getting hammered with snow and cold. I need spring.

Tonight was baby back ribs in the crock pot then finished under the broiler. Pretty good.

Hope everyone is staying warm (you too Eric lol!)

Oh Eric, you reminded me of my brother in LA who loves to call during our hardy winter weather patterns to let me know he is driving around in his convertible with the top down.  LOL  Hope Sharon feels better soon.

We are piling up with snow now...  DH and I took a walk up town to do errands just as the snow was starting. Super cold, invigorating walk! Am loving those errand walks....as long as we are bundled up!

Made chicken piccata (with lots of mushrooms added) tonight served over brown rice pasta and with a cuke and tomato salad. I was supposed to go to observe a school meeting related to my volunteer "job" tonight, but since the roads were a mess I opted out and enjoyed our leisurely dinner. Lots of shoveling tomorrow.....

Wow the weather has been just crazy!! Just.so.cold here in the NE.  High today of 7!  Yikes! By contrast you are having a heat wave in AK from what I saw on the weather channel, Bedo!

The good news for us shivering our butts off.... Last time we had this bitter cold during the winter season, we had almost no mosquitos and gnats the following summer!  So lets get through this and hope for the benefits this summer!

Stay warm because Baby, It's Cold Outside!
