Tamoxifen Takers - Please Read and See Your Dentist !!!

Options

All,

I have been on tamoxifen since December . I am not complaining as there have been few side effects thus far. I just came from my dentist and he stated that tamox alters the acid content in your mouth, making many women prone to rapid gum line tooth decay.  He stated he has avoided this with his BC patients through the use of nightly fluoride treatments .  I was fitted for fluoride trays and will start the nightly treatments for the duration I am on the tamox.    I am starting this new thread as I want to make sure no one is caught off guard. Please see your dentist to determine your risk and if these treatments are appropriate for you !

I consider my civic duty complete !! Have a great weekend !!!

I'll ask about this because my gumlines are lower than I'd likeScared. Another dental related matter. In the 10-15yr prior to BC(dx@52), my teeth were spreading apart. I developed a significant gap between my 2 front teeth. My dentist suggested I have it filled in from both sides(fillings of some sort). Since starting Tamox, my front toothy gap has closed. My lower teeth are now moving around & getting crowded. Hoping maybe there is a dental hygienist out there to help me understand. My dentist just shrugged his shoulders.

Thanks for the heads up ...I just googled the subjet as well ..and found that you can counteract the acidity by rinsing with baking soda .

    Fiaranch1,

Thanks for letting us know. I just want to warn that I have read somewhere fluoride is not good for cancer patients. For example, the drinking water has fluoride and is not safe for people with cancer. I guess be careful not to swallow it if you are using the treatments. I will visit my dentist in a few months and will ask him about it.

    new2bc,

Every cancer just like people are different so yes please ask your dentist and MO what is right for you . My dentist and MO discussed jointly discussed my treatment plan .  I have  both BC and lymph node cancer.  I feel like I am already dealing with enough and if fluoride will help me keep my real teeth as long as I can I will do it . :-)

Interesting.  My dentist never mentioned this the entire 5 years I was on tamoxifen. (and they ask about your meds every time you're there). Fortunately, no problems at all with any decay here.  I had mild gingivitis and receeding gums many years before ever starting the tamox, so unrelated.

Interesting. I've been on Tamoxifen for 1.5 years and my dental health has actually improved. No cavities since chemo (many before) and my gums are now normal.

Hi! I saw your post about the fluoride treatments that you were doing several years back. Did they help with the gum issues? I'm just noticing issues after being on Tamoxifen for the past eight years. Just curious how it worked out for you. Thanks for any input.

I did end up with gum line decay while on Tamox. My last cavity was when I was a teenager. I felt like a failure. I really do take care of my teeth. It was not just one tooth, but 4. Two wisdom teeth & the molars in front of them. So maybe the Tamox had something to do with it.

    Dear Friends,

Am a new member of this group.

I have been detected stage 2 of breast cancer in 2015, and i underwent six chemo, and left breast from inside was removed keeping the outer area and then implant was done successfully.

its been three years that am under Tablet Tamoxifen tablets , now i realized that my hairs are getting very thin and my scalp is visible. i also get hot flush during night.

am not yet reached menopause stage.

My doctor suggested that in case he prescribe alter native medicine then either i have to remove my uterus of will have to take injection since am still in pre-menopause stage.

If anyone can suggest if am continuing Tamoxifen , what other methods i should use to protect my hairs.

    regards
