Hi. This is my first post. I have just been dx with DCIS for the third time. First time was in 1994 right breast. I had a lumpectomy & radiation. Second time 17 years later 2011 left breast. Once again had lumpectomy & radiation. I just got biopsy results yesterday - left breast DCIS. I am seeing PS next Wed. to discuss next step.

Just wanted to say hi.

Alice

I'm so sorry to hear that you find yourself dealing with this again. Since you are seeing a PS, I'm assuming that means you will have MX this time. I wish you the best in all the decisions that come at this point and hope  you find a great team for your treatment.

Thank you. MX is my only option because I can't have radiation, having already had it. I know I want reconstruction, not sure what kind. Also, thinking about MX on my right breast also. Hard decision.

    Hi Alice,

So sorry ya have to go through this again.  I'll just share a tiny bit that might help with your very personal decision.  I had dcis 4 years ago and had 2 lumpectomies and went on Tamoxifen.  Last Apri dcis returned....my friend who had stage 3, chemo and rads told me dcis was like winning the lotto, it's a huge warning flag...she told me to take the 'sign' and get rid of everything.  She also happens to be an ooncology nurse.  I took her advice and had a bmx in May with recon.  Turns out after the reports came back, that the right decision was made...dcis was all over the one side!  I am so happy with my decision.... Life is too short!!  Hope this helps!  Good luck!

Thanks to all that replied. It means a lot!

I've made the decision to have a bmx. penquin, your friend is so right about DCIS being like winning the lottery. I've won 3 times, it's time to quit pushing my luck. Waiting for the last biopsy results about did me in.

I thought I was meeting with a PS yesterday but turns out she was the surgeon that will do the bmx & I now have to consult with the PS, so I don't yet know what my recon options are. I'm sure, I'll be asking for input on that. Also, might need to borrow some courage, if anyone has any to spare.

WOT - Hi, Alice.  So sorry you have to be here again, but it sounds like you've made peace with your decision.  And that's a great thing.  You're going to have a hundred questions along the way so please know that all you have to do is ask and someone in here will be along to help.  Sending you a hug and a prayer - good luck to you!!

The Breast Reconstruction Handbook by Kathy Steglio is a good place to start. I went into fact-finding mode when I decided to reconstruct, and I ended up going a very different way than I had planned. We get a little more time to decide with DCIS, so take time to make the right decision for yourself. That little voice inside will not steer you wrong. Best wishes!

I chose a BMX after being DX'd with multifocal DCIS in the right breast... mine was er-, pr-.  I felt like if I was removing one I might as well remove both so I never have to worry about it again... best decision, never had a regret and feel as good as new.  In fact, I am 7 weeks pregnant!  Life is fine after a BMX...  GL to you!

Just wanted to update - I did have the BMX and tissue expanders (even with having had radiation on both sides). Have had some minor bumps, nothing too serious. Almost 5 weeks out & still have burning, hate TE, etc. Ever once in a while I have to get out my final pathology report to remind myself to count my blessings. laura11103, many times I have reread your sentence....best decision, never had a regret and feel as good as new.
