JMB - I brought throat lozenges, lip balm, iPhone, toiletries and hand cream  I also brought facial wipes but never used them.  Anything else you need they should have in the hospital.

About visitors...I had my DIEP in a hospital where I know and work with a lot of the nurses and administrators (I don't actually work at the hospital) and I had a lot of visitors.  Fortunately everyone knew to stay a moment or two, say hello, and split.  I was pretty drugged, but I'm sure I greeted EVERYONE with, "Hey, you wanna see?" followed by a flinging up of my hospital gown.  I was happy to see friends, and I knew they were expecting me to look pale and wrecked with dirty hair.  I didn't disappoint.

There was just one thing I wanted at the hospital I didn't bring, and I sure didn't bring much.  I needed some shampoo.  The "general cleansing gel" they give you for face, body, hair, feet, and enemas...is just worthless.  A little travel-size bottle of shampoo would have been heaven.

I second Sbe......EVERY time someone walked into my room, I threw off the covers (buck nekkid underneath) and said in a loud and VERY obnoxious (Wilbur -induced) voice:    "Hey!  Wanna see???!!? LOOK at these things!" My good friend's DH is  a surgeon in that hospital...he was on rounds, and stopped in to see me......he still can't looked me in the eye........

I had a girlfriend visit who always came at lunch time, right when the PT was there for lymph draining massage, so she saw everything, too! Apart from that, just family. My DH hurt his back and couldn't come for a few days, so my 15yo DS came and entertained me with card games and youtube videos and took me for walks - it was lovely to see him every day. I was in hospital for 2 weeks, so I was bored out of my mind and desperate for company, but not from outside the "inner circle".

Lol! Now I'm thinking I need my husband or mom to be with me at all times so if visitors come, I don't fling my hospital gown and lay there in all my glory. Aren't drugs the best? Loopy

I'm feeling a little pissy today. My youngest  (11 years old) cried last night. She's worried about me and the fact that I won't be home for a week. It broke my heart. Then a facebook friend (not a real friend) posted a video about how sugar causes cancer. I commented that I hate articles like that and she made a totally offensive comment back. So smug. Don't people know not to mess with me right now? Lol!

I can blame the dilaudid for being a flasher in the hosptial but what's my excuse now!!?? Hmmm I seem to show my 16 inch scar and foobs to whoever wants a peek. Like it's not a real boob so it somehow does not count as indecent! Haha

Hope your daughter feels better about things jmb. My older daughters were very stressed and I encouraged them to tell their friends and talk about it....that made them feel better. My 10 year old niece had her whole class pray for me during school ( she goes to a religious school).

Finished pre-op this morning and got all my questions answered.  Ready to rock and roll at 7 am on Monday.  Mani/pedi today, hair cut and facial tomorrow.  I can't believe I'm going to have a rack (kinda) on Monday.

jmb, I had a facebook "friend" post an article about how all the toxins we eat cause our cancer.  She added a note of her own, "time to cut the crap!"  Her post wasn't directed at me, but I "unfriended" her fast.

This was also the person who, at the beginning of my journey slogging through BC treatment, encouraged me to look into bathing my breast in a silver solution to kill the cancer.  She also stated that the "Big Pharma" actually have the cure for cancer but won't tell anyone because it's some simple vitamin or something and they wouldn't make any money."

Urgh.  They should develop a sensitivity vaccine that is given with all the childhood shots!

Hey, Movie, laughing my socks off here...I can just imagine the scene.  But you know, at this point, I don't think of them as breasts--they're works of surgical art!

Good luck, jenjen! Hope all goes awesome for you! (I'm jealous of the mani/pedi. The nurse at my consult said no polish on fingers or toes.)

lucyv, my sweet girl wants me to tell her youth pastor at church about my surgery so all the 5-6th graders in her class (about 100 kids) can pray for me on Sunday. She also said she doesn't think she can go to school on Friday while I'm in surgery. I told her whatever she needs to do, is fine. At this point, I'm more worried about my girls than myself.

sbelizabeth, the sensitivity vaccine made me lol! I admit, I could probably use one sometimes. And I love the "surgical works of art" comment too! I like that better than "foobs". What does that stand for anyhow? fake boobs? I'm new here. I can't figure it out. Haha!

You guys are funny.  My hospital put about an inch of gauze that they use for burn patients on top of each foob or surgical work of art and just taped it at the top.  I was also in a hospital gown all the time, so every time someone came to check with the doppler, they carefully lifted everything and listened in.

On the visitor front, my best friend, who is like a sister to me came on day 2.  She wasn't sure she could wait until then.  But she and I can sit and say nothing very comfortably, so no pressure on me there.  She and another friend came on day 3 and then 3 others on day 4. Plus my parents were there every day (I'm single -  no husband or kids).   It all worked out fine.  Except for my Mom, no one stayed that long.

Good luck Jenjen - you will do great!

I'm five weeks out - just waiting for a friend to pick me up to go for lunch.  Put my jeans on.  Would rather  be in yoga pants!  It's a bit weird to see what fits how now.  I guess my body is still a bit swollen, even though I can't see it.

    Have a great day everyone,

    Ridley

jenjenl- sounds like you are in good shape! Mani/pedi/hair on the weekend to-do list sounds perfect! You are going to do great.

Jmb- yup....foobs= fake boobs. I sometimes call them my mini muffins since they arose from my muffin top.

Lucy. I love the term mini-muffins!  I still have some muffin top, not at the front of my stomach, but where my abdominal scars end on each side.  I have a little muffin on each side.  I guess those are mine to work on or actually off :)

Hahaha! Mini muffins! Again, I'm laughing out loud. Mine probably will be mini, according to my PS. Is there a clever name for them before the nipples are added? I chuckle every time I think of the weirdness of boobs with no nipples. I suppose laughing about it is better than crying.

jmb, I prefer noobs - new boobs. Sounds better to me than fake, in my attempt to accept them as the new me. But my DH calls them my boobs, because he says they're still me  :)  Call 'em what you want!

I had my surgery on August 8, so I'm... *counts* ... 5 months plus out and I still can't wear jeans! The ends of my scar are still soooooooo sensitive and feel irritated really easily, and the hard waistband feels uncomfortable on my belly. I used to absolutely live in jeans, so you can imagine I'm eager to get back there!

sbelizabeth, I noticed your link, so I went to your blog and read your speech. It brought tears to my eyes. Absolutely beautiful! Your husbands comments reminded me of a book I read before Christmas called "You'll Get Through This" by Max Lucado. It goes through the story of Joseph and is about how God uses our hurts for good. It gave me so much encouragement.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. ~Genesis 50:20

    Jenjen,

They cannot see the colour of your nails re: oxygen levels if there is polish on them.

I think it is because the clip they put on your finger, to measure oxygen levels, cannot "read" thru dark nail polish.  I was told real dark or black won't work.  I am just going to have a clear color with a tinge of pink put on.

I am going for a brow waxing and a mani/pedi too.  I am contemplating the hair thing.  My "before chemo" hair was shoulder length & brown.  I now have about 4" of hair (which I am THRILLED about!!), but it is now messy and unkempt looking because it is getting longer.  I'd like to have it trimmed to neaten it up, but do not want to lose ANY length.  I am considering just sticking with it the way it is & maybe going for a trim post diep.  I figure I should have another inch or so by then.

Jenjen. Good to hear your wait is almost over.  Best of luck on Monday and may the new rack be "absolutely awesome"

Sbelizabeth.  I was the second woman in my immediate family to get BC. I told one of my sisters that she needed to be diligent in keeping up on her mammos.  She said that she ate right and exercised so she didn't have to worry. And yes, sadly she should have been worried because it wasn't a year later that she got her DX.  Glad you had the ability to unfriend that woman.

Lahela. Maybe you should try the stretchy "PAJAMA-jeans" they advertise on the late night infomercials!". LOL

JMB: I see your Stage 0 and Grade 2 are the same as mine. DId the dr. suggest or push for the BMX or was that a personal decision? I had a DCIS lumpectomy in 2011, but cant tolerate the Tamoxifen, so Im considering a BMX with DIEP as Im fearful of BC coming back.

Im seeing a fair amount of DCIS patients getting BMX  on these boards this week...is that becoming the new standard? or is it a geography thing? or other reason?

bluewillowskys, I am having a BMX due to a DCIS recurrence. My first diagnosis was 4 years ago, and I was diagnosed with a recurrence (same breast, same spot) in November. You can't have radiation to the same area twice, so the treatment for a DCIS recurrence is mastectomy. It was my choice to do both sides. I know I scare people who have had DCIS before, but a recurrence is actually pretty rare. What does your oncologist think?

JMB5: I have appts with a PS on the 23rd, my BS on the 28th and my onco(onco and mammo on apri 1stl). Im debating doing a fat grafting procedure to fill in a dent and even out both OR if the onco thinks its reasonable a proactive NSM with immediate DIEP on both sides.....the reason being I cant tolerate tamoxifen and had to stop it after only 1 year and ive been reading about a lot of DCIS recurrences or new cancers after having just lumpectomy and rads like i did.

Thanks sweetpickle - they are doing mine as well.  We have a lot on common on our dx.  who is your MO?  I have dr limintani and concidering a different doctor for my ongoing treatments.

Regarding the haircut...hairdressers suck at knowing what a 1/2 an inch is.  I left with super short hair and again look like a boy.  It is styled now so when it does grow it will grow the shape i want. The facial on the other hand was dreamy!

jenjen1 and beck0806, Good luck on the 20th! I have heard wonderful things about both Dr. Robinson and Cleveland Clinic, I know you will be in good hands. Just watch out for Wilbur, I hear that he causes a lot of mischief after surgery!Nerdy
