Any Hummingbird Watchers Out There?

I use the same formula but make 2 gallons at a time. Have to make it 3 times a week.
-
do you save it somewhere? if so where or how
-
and whoever said we never use algebra in our lives is totally wrong...
-
Haha. I agree with using algebra. What color is your food? I thought it needed to be red to attract birds? I only have one that visits this season. He has a blue Dolores throat. I used to have two that spent a lot of time chasing each other around the feeder. Now I have this little guy and I want to keep him happy.
-
I don't use any coloring..
-
Thanks Lisa. I will give your recipe a try.
-
No coloring in mine either. I keep it in the refrigerator. I go through it pretty fast, at least 4 feeders a day.
-
I will try to make more than I need next time...

I'm very sad today. I made what is probably my last batch of hummingbird food for the year. We're down to half a dozen young males and females a day. At least they're quite fat! I miss them terribly when they're gone.
-
I know I'm sad too, mine have been gone now for a couple of weeks here in northern ohio. I have juice out just in case there is one still migrating
-
They are still around here..
-
Lisa, I know you have Annas year round, what others do you have in winter?
-
Our hummers live here year-round. We feed them pretty well, and they like the trees, so I guess they figure that's easier than migrating.
When I had my surgery, I taught DH how to clean and refill the feeders. I get them at WalMart, they're plastic, with wide tops that screw onto the base and make them really easy to clean. Now that's one of his favorite chores!
We use 1 cup sugar to 4 cups water, and we change once or twice every week, no matter how much is left in the feeder. Leave it any longer and it turns sour, cloudy, and develops mold.
I have two hanging on the front porch, and two in the back yard, and the males will fight over them no matter what. (O.K., maybe they're just playing...)
If there are six hummers quietly feeding on the same feeder, I figure they're girls.
We've sat on our front porch (it's a gazebo) and counted 14 hummers at a time. Now there are about 6 or 8, I think. But they'll be there all winter.
-
Nance, we also have blacked chin hummers and costas...
-
And another I can't figure out..
-
I saw my last hummingbird here in central WI a couple weeks ago. I had already taken down my hummer feeder. The little hummer was drinking nectar from my zinnias where the humming bird feeder was. Sad to see them go. My summer was pretty much spent recovering from lung surgery....
Anyone know if it is true that humming birds hitch rides on bigger birds flying south for the winter?
-
It is not true.
-
I was just putting out my feeder and a beautiful Anna's hummer came right up and drank from
the feeder still in my hand..up close and personal, but couldn't get a picture.. -
That is so cool when they do that!
-
must transfer my photos of the hummingbird park in Costa Rica. Promise to do that when I get home. Did see several this morning I am just not quick enough with my camera -
just a note, I've had a ruby wintering over here in central Texas. I heard they might so I've had to deice the feeder a couple morns when it's in the teens. Can't imagine how they stay warm.
On the flip side goldfinches have completely snubbed me. At one time I had a long tube and finches top to bottom. This year a bag and no takers. Oh well.
-
Chickadee, lucky you!
-
Both shots were taken at the hummingbird park in Costa Rica

-
Stunning photos, Mumito!

-
we have one in our hummer house in the SD Zoo.
-
Maybe his cousin..
-
SoCalLisa-where is the hummer house? All the times I've been to the Zoo, I've never seen that!
-
it is next to the Childrens' Zoo by the bromeliades
-
Thanks, Lisa!
