Hi All,

My wife was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2012.  It was IDC with lymph node involvement.  She went through neo-adjuvant chemo with Taxol + herceptin for 12 cycles and then 4 cycles of FEC + herceptin.  Surgery (prphylactic mastectomy and reconstruction ) followed by radiation.  Her 52 doses of hercepting ended in August-2013.  However, she started seeing rash on the radiated area and we went to the oncologist yesterday (01/14/2014)  and they did a fine needle biopsy and confirmed they saw cancer cells in the rash.  They did a punch biopsy and we are awaing results.

She is recommending Taxotere + perjeta + herceptin as treatment.  Is this common to recur so soon?  Has anyone experienced this?  Should we take a second opinion?

Thanks in advance for the answers and suggestions.

I am so sorry  you find yourselves back here again.  I have no experience with recurrence but it never hurts to get a second opinion.  I wish I could offer some great information or advice....sorry :(

Her2+ recurrence can be very rapid - if it recurs it is generally within the first 2-3 years. Are they doing hormonal/Her2 testing on the punch biopsy? I am also wondering if it is IBC, rather than IDC recurrence this time, because it presented in a rash.  I am so sorry you find yourselves in this situation after just finishing treatment.  Wishing you the best.

Yeah they are doing hormonal her2 testing on punch biopsy.  It is not on the breast directly but it is on skin above the breast in the line of radiation.

They did not mention it as IBC.

Hope you have answers and a plan soon - again, sorry you find yourself in this boat.  Hoping the Perjeta/Taxotere/Herceptin combo will be the ticket to getting rid of this for good!

Not only should you get a 2nd opinion from another onocoologist, but once the pathology is in from the biopsy, you can have those slides sent for a 2nd opinion too.  Johns Hopkins has information online about getting 2nd opinions on the bioposy results.  I wish you both the best and hope that it is not a recurrance.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your wife but happy that she has such good support.  I had my first beast cancer in 2006 and a recurrence in the same area in 2010 with a rash and breast cancer cells in the skin.  A local recurrence doesn't mean that the battle is lost.  I have been doing well since my 2010 chemo and surgery.  I have read that often times when cancer returns to the same breast area it simply means they didn't get it all the first time.  I had all of the skin removed in the area and replaced with skin and tissue from my back.  Hopefully, it is all gone this time and I hope your wife has the same experience.

    Good luck,

    Nancy

Thanks IllinoisNancy, your post made my day.  I was not drawing courage before reading your post.

RockyM, I am going to send the biopsy results for 2nd opinion, I researched on Hopkins university site.

Have a CT scan today, please keep us in your prayers.

    Thanks all.

IllinoisNancy,  Would you mind letting me know what chemo drugs you got second time around and how long was that for?

    Thanks

    Ajit,

Will be keeping you and your wife in my thoughts today. A second opinion might not be a bad idea.

sending hugs to both of you,

    Bren

I have had two recurrences within  a 5 year window.  I was first diagnosed in 12/2008.  My first recurrence happened 4/2012, just a little over the 3 year mark.  I had a lumpectomy the first go round it it recurred right around the scar.  My second recurrence came just a year later and was in my lymph nodes.    This past November my MO declared me NED again.

My first round of chemo was Taxotere, carboplatin and herceptin.  This last round is taxol and herceptin.   While it can be very disheartening to have a recurrence, do not think for a minute that you can not beat it again.  I am keeping score and I am up 3 to zip!

    Hi All,

So the good news is CT came out good.  The Dr said it is local to the skin area. This time around I want to be aggressive in my approach to all of this with the doctors.  Can somebody let me know what the treatment options are?  Doctor is suggesting Herceptin+Perjeta+Taxotere for a total of 6 cycles( once every three weeks ).

Can somebody let me know what needs to be done after this?  Surgery? radiation?  follow-up?

    Thanks

    Hi Friends,

Should I get a PET/CT done or is just CT good enough?

    Thanks

Hello, I just want to share information with anybody that will listen. My mother had a very large breast tumor about the size of a fist that was about break through the skin on one of her breasts. She started taking fucoidan and curcumin 3 times a day along with vitamin c, d, e. Her tumor has shrunken drastically. Every day we can see a visible difference. I just want to let people know what is helping her so drastically, in hopes of helping someone else.  These are natural supplements that you can buy from the store or online. Please research fucoidan and curcumin. I just want to help others to get the results she has gotten. God bless you. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. She only started taking these on new years 2014 and has already gone down about half the size.

hey there newhope4u   Was wondering if there was any good in taking these supplements if you have already had surgery , waiting chemo , and want all that can help you get through this ugly disease without all the other drugs out there to poison our systems more.  Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Looks like there is already research being done to use supplements to fight cancer.

wifessupport - regarding those scans, you should ask your wife's MO and see which scan to do. those scans are very harmful to the bodies, so doctors might not incline to scan very often on a patient. how is she holding up so far?
