Sharon, I love that you love your  boobs.  I can't wait for my turn.  I am still waiting to hear back again about my CAT scan.  I warmed them already about the incidentomas on the liver.

Good morning ladies. Had my pre-op physical yesterday. Everthing looks good. Going to see Dr. Djohan tomorrow. He has the OR booked for 6 hours, thats less than I expected. But i'm happy about that. Trying to think of questions for him. I don't know if I have a choice of size or not. I'm thinking a B cup would be nice,  my right is barely an A cup. I will have to have an implant on the right to match them. Less than a week to go. I'm very nervous but reading all these posts has really helped a lot.

beck.....at this stage, if you haven't already done so, I'd probably be asking questions about "post-surgery" protocols/expectations, since they seem to be the most variable amongst all the different surgeons. So things like: bras post op, tummy compression, return to exercise/activity, followup schedule....stuff like that. I'd specifically make sure you know the "bra answer", since you will be two different scenarios post-op.

If he is needing to recon only one breast, you should be able to "aim" for the size/fullness you want to eventually end up with. Your PS should be able to also guide you, as to what would best fit your bodytype/frame. Some people want as big as they can get, some go in the opposite direction. It's a personal choice. Glad to hear the pre-op went well and you're good to go!!!!!! Getting nervous....yup, sounds like you're right on schedule!

Beck, make a list of questions so you don't forget to ask all the things you have been thinking about.  I always get to the PS surgeon's office and forget about half of what I wanted to ask.  You are going to do great!!!

These days I am more of a lurker here, but I do read everything, and think of you gals in your various stages of recovery.

Curlylocks, big hugs to you! Yes, waiting and uncertainty is the worst, and I hope those docs get their act together very soon. Then you will know what you're facing. Maybe take that car for another spin? It helps to stay busy, but I'm preaching to the choir here. You know all these things, being around the block before. You are in my thoughts - best wishes!

    Ladies,

Thanks for answering my questions about what you can feel in your stomach after the surgery. I appreciate all the insight, although it seems like everybody is a little different.

I am trying to get our "nook" together so I can take it to the hospital with me, (I don't want to take the laptop) and download some applications on it so I will still be in touch when I am in the hospital....I tried to post something yesterday, but couldn't get the letters to come up on the thing! Oh well, I guess I will either figure it out or I won't.

I have a week and a half to go, so I can't say I'm getting nervous yet. I'm at the point where I still am thinking it will a break from work...and isn't that just sad....! I suppose I will start to panic next week.

Thanks for all the help and support.

TBerg - I totally saw the surgery and recovery partially as a break from work.   Diagnostic testing, first surgery, and uncertainty around chemo/rads meant I  canceled the  vacations I had scheduled last year.  Except for a couple of weeks for my first surgery and all the appointments, I worked (sometimes seemed like I showed up more than worked!) and I was totally ready for a break by the time this surgery rolled.

As I'm sure you have read on these threads,  you don't have to be brave - you just have to show up and let your team do what it does best.  Doesn't mean panic will stay away, but I found it was a nice thought to have firmly planted in my brain.

tberg - I am doing the same thing!  I am getting my ipad in shape to take with me - downloading new apps, deleting old ones, etc...   I also plan on watching the Grammys from my hospital bed Sunday night!  I have made a pile of things to pack & keep adding to it as I think of things.  I know that I will way over pack, but I like being prepared.   Also, not sure if I want people visiting me (other than my hubby & kids). I think it may bother me to have people there when I look & feel horrible - may stress me further.

Donna, I love that you are thinking of all kinds of fun things to do from your hospital bed, but if you sleep through Grammy's don't be do disappointed.  I just know from experience that after 10 hours of anesthesia I was sleeping if there wasn't somebody there poking me for something.  You might want to tape it at home just in case you miss it.  I didn't want anybody but my husband coming to see me after my bmx.  Luckily, my hospital was quite a commute from where I live, and nobody was just going to pop in while they were out running errands...lol.

I love how you guys are acting like this surgery is a break from work.  I am going with that attitude too.  I like it.

my PS and the nursing unit discouraged any visitors other than my hubby, for the first 4 days. They wanted me to rest, knowing that I would be sleep deprived from all the flap checks, and also wanted to minimize risk of infectious "visitors"....I was totally on board with that....didn't really want to be socializing either!

Sharon1942 and goldie4040 thank you so much for the info. about Dr. Saint-Cyr! It helped both Ann and I.

Curly, thanks for all the great information. When I had my axillary lymph node dissection they put me in a binder ( blue material) with Velcro in the front. It did not seem like cloth or cotton, and I broke out in a rash everywhere it surrounded my body. Is this what they are using after surgery?

Bella, if something they used before caused you discomfort, or you had a bad reaction to it, let them know.  There is usually an alternataive that might work better for you.  There is no need for unnecessary suffering.

I traveled for surgery, so had no visitors except my hubby. That was so nice. Wilbur was with me and who knows what he would have made me said. I also looked tired, pale, etc. I would use your PS as an excuse and say NO to visitors until you FEEL like seeing them. My hubby sent out a mass email letting everyone know how I was doing and gave updates. I called my sister and a couple of close friends after I got out of the hospital. It worked out great.

Haha! Evidently I had visitors after DIEP but have no memory of it.....that Wilbur. I would suggest no visitors except family. I know my daughters were there but don't remember that much, either. Hubs, yes.

8 days post-op.  yesterday was a rough day for pain.   Went to see the PS today and he removed 3 of the 4 drains.  Woo Hoo!   One left in the abdomen, darn.  Made a Target run on the way home.  I realized I did not have the right pants.  I have yoga pants but they are tight.   I picked up some looser ones and a long dress that was in with the athletic wear, I guess for lounging, and I think it will be perfect for lounging and I won't have to worry about pants hitting the incision.  Glad to be back home in bed now!

Had a LONG day of tests and blood work yesterday. That CT scan was weird. I was not a fan of contrast going into my blood vessels. Strange feeling. I haven't heard from my PS, so I guess that's good news. All the blood work and heart stuff was fine. One more week until surgery! I'm still living in denial, so I'm feeling pretty good about it. :)

I have a couple questions... I am assuming there's no reason to take any facial cleansers, make-up, etc. I won't have the ability or desire to use any of it, right? I really like my make-up, but dumb question, I know. The other thing I was wondering was about visitors. I saw some of your previous posts on visitors. I'm wondering if I'll feel like having my daughters visit... ages 15, 13, 11. My surgery is on Friday, so how soon do you think I'd be feeling up to them visiting?

JMB, I brought the olay facial wipes with me to my bmx, and I did bring a hair brush, dry shampoo,  lipstick, chapstick, a little bare minerals powder, and of course, tooth brush and tooth paste.  You don't need the make up stuff, but it made me feel better to not look totally ill when I went home.  I am bet you are happy to have those tests out of the way.

Iowa, Wilbur is a figment of Jeannie's imagination. When she was having her diep she tried to send us all a message that didn't make much sense, and it trailed off towards the end with the name Wilbur. So, we all found it very funny, and teased her often about it, and then somehow he became our anesthesia Mascot.  Sometimes he is good, and sometimes he can be naughty, but he is usually watching and taking good care of us.

jmb  My 9 year old son visited the first night, but I was very groggy and slept most of the time.  I had a couple of visitors the 2nd day.  But honestly, I spent most of the time sleeping because they have to check the blood supply to the flaps every hour so you never get to sleep any longer than an hour at a time.

I brought face lotion and lip balm and that was all I needed.

jmb5 - I am packing facial cleansing wipes, body cleansing wipes & some make-up.  After my uni-mx surgery, the only thing that was really bad was the nausea so I didn't care how awful I looked.  With this surgery I am getting the nausea patch, so I am thinking if I do not have nausea, I may not feel horrible.  I can deal with pain and tiredness but not nausea!

It seems like everyone gets a ct scan pre-op, I did not.  I had blood work done and an EKG.  What does the ct scan show?

Donna, no worries.  The CAT scan is to show the vessels in your tummy, but a lot of PS's don't use them.  I know Bailey's didn't, and Deb's didn't, and I am sure other's will chime in that their surgeons didn't use them either.  It might also be that you have not had any tummy surgeries before?  That way they can be almost positive you have good vessels.  I had a c section and a hysterectomy. That could be why my CAT was ordered.

jmb- if your kids are sensitive maybe don't have them visit the first day after surgery since you will still be hooked up to a lot of stuff and that may scare them. The third day they start disconnecting you from everything and you will feel more awake. I really only needed toothpaste/brush and I did bring travel, size stuff to wash my face. I also brought travel shampoo and conditioner since I showered before I left. Hair elastic, Chapstick. You sound like you are doing well. One step at a time.

Donna-the CT or MRA helps the surgeon find the best blood vessels . This is suppose to help them plan things in advance and decrease OR time. Maybe ask your Dr why he doesn't do it. I also had a c section prior.

    Thanks Lucy!

Donna- my PS wanted the CT since I had had previous abdominal surgeries, so sounding like that is why they do it.

I highly recommend the patch and don't take it off until you are going home.  I had one tiny bit of nausea first thing in recovery, but after that I was fine.

    beebop,

That is what I am hoping for - no nausea!  With my uni-mx there were 2 bad things - nausea & the compression.  I was wrapped so tight that I thought my ribs were bruised.  It was absolutely awful - I stayed completely awake for almost 36 hours & felt like I couldn't breathe.  They explained that it was important to keep the compression on & they would only loosen it if I truly could not get air in my lungs, which was not the case.  I had them give me lots of drugs & sleeping pills, hoping to fall asleep & get some relief, which didn't work.  The only relief came when they FINALLY loosened the bandage - which felt sooo good!  I know I will not have any compression this time (I asked) and I will have the nausea patch, so I am hoping to be in good shape!

ugghh...Donna that sounds awful.   Will you not even have the abdominal binder? It's very annoying, I took mine off today to wash it and it has been a nice relief.
