How vain are you?

Selena, I love Jane Iredale eye shadow (think they're matte, but haven't really noticed). Here's one I just ordered:

-
Selena - I'm a huge Mac eye makeup fan. They have tons of colors and many are matte. Price is reasonable and their consultants are pretty good at helping pick colors. I use both matte and shimmery (is that a word?) shadows usually in shades of purple, brown, and plum. Those work best with my coloring. I'm very fair skinned, blonde, and blue eyed. The Mac mascara is great too. I use Lancôme foundation...I feel that works best to even out my skin color which can get red. Chanel makes a great brow pencil (taupe? Blonde?) but it's a little pricey. The pencil adheres to your brow hairs so it looks more natural. I'm not interested in a brown stripe across my forehead! Almost forgot one of my favorites....Mac bronzing powder. Keeps me from looking like a corpse!
-
Sunflowers, agreed, and lol on the tits.
-
Momine, tho we miss knowing what "larry" has to say.....
-
Sunflowers, GARY! Sheesh!
I still read Abigail's posts sometimes for the entertainment factor. -
Bren58... Cuppa Joe.... THAT'S IT!!! That's the one I have. I really like it, but would like to have an alternative to switch to when I want to "glam up".
Great suggestions, ladies. There is a Sephora here in town, but it's always packed, so I've never ventured in. Will have to do so and see what they have.
Yorkie... that's a lovely combination, I'll keep my eye peeled for that (pun not intended
). Those are all colours I'd like to try.Mardibra... I've never tried MAC, although I do use Chanel. Who carries it? And you have a lovely eye... Mine are more a "smokey" blue, more "greyed".
Sunflowers... I'm with you. I'm entirely open to alternative/complementary treatments, but I do want to know if there is solid research behind them done by people with solid credentials. It's one thing to try something innocous, that may not help, but won't hurt either. I just get so concerned when I read that someone is doing something potentially dangerous and encouraging other people to do so. It's disturbing and irresponsible.
Momine... LOL! I took a look at the Gary stuff a few months ago and decided that anyone who could only publish his findings in Penthouse magazine was, probably, not worth listening to when it came to my health.
You ladies ROCK!!!
-
Selena, my eyes are a medium green. I thought that combo would look nice on me. I have another combo that is a violet. I tend to use eye shadow to match my clothes and nails, rather than specifically compliment my eyes. Probably a mistake, but it's all part of my obsession with coordinating everything.
-
Eye color, interesting story....mine are kinda bluish gray with a LOT of "gold" I call it yellow around the pupil. YEARS ago, seeing a very good eye doctor in New York, he said to me, "You must've had very, very serious jaundice when you were born." YIKES - how can ya tell? I nearly died for the first months, until research docs at good teaching hospital nearby made a concoction of "powdered banana milk" ( as it was described to me later in my life) I could digest...pictures of me from those first months are GHASTLY. Well, he said, the YELLOW around the pupils....
Hhhmmm...has me wondering if Selena had bad jaundice as an infant.
OK, Momine, I'm just being a wee bit stubborn, just a weeeeee bit, imagine if I started so many posts "Larry says..." just makes me smile! ;-)
-
Sun, LOL on "Larry." When dd was in preschool, the preschool director ALWAYS mispronounced our last name. Every.single.freaking.time@@ It is not Mamalakitopouloutoiannakis [made up] or anything, it is pretty easy for a Greek name. Her name was O'Connell, and in retaliation I always referred to her as Mrs. McDonald.
Selena, I am not a make-up person, but from my days of shopping for the teens, I think you should look at Stila's stuff. Korres also has nice makeup: http://www.korres.com/default.aspx?page_id=263

OMG, Sunny!
I always wondered if Gary/Larry really exists or is just a figment of abigails very fertile imagination.
-
Yorkie, Gary Null is, sadly, real: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Null
He even warrants a Quackwatch entry: http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/nul...
-
yorkie - me thinks there is a gary, but I prefer to "listen" to the larry of my imagination...he tells me to drink hot yummy dark chocolate cocoa with marshmallow fluff melting on top. He also tells me not to fret about not being able to join the "eye shadow" discussion, cuz by now I have so many extra eyelids, I can paint a rainbow up there & no one would notice.
BTW - if evolution is functional, has anybody figured out the function of the extra eyelids, and the loss of jawline - I mean I guess the extra chins can add warmth, but I use heavy cotton turtlenecks for that, also keeps sweaters from itching the folds, I won't start on the straggly suddenly appearing LONG, I mean LONG hairs suddenly appearing in odd places....that's just WEIRD!
-
Well, I'm happy that quack is being watched.
Sunny, ah the joys (NOT!) of aging!
-
kayb... I've used lip liner for a few years now, especially since my favourite lipstick is a retro poppy-red. I use a red one - feathery strokes - and then use a lip brush to "paint" on the lipstick. Then blot. That way it looks crisp and doesn't cake on. For my lighter, summer lipsticks (peach, rosy-peach), I found a neutral lipliner which isn't quite pink and isn't quite peach. Any lip liner that's waxy should do.
A friend of mine - who is a former model - showed me how to use the lip pencil, following my natural lip-line, but just outside it a bit, so that my lips appear totally natural, but fuller once I brush the lipstick on. I had to practice for awhile to get it right, but it's a neat trick.
-
momine,
Re: Gary and his bco minion, that is exactly why I continue to read the posts. It's a slightly bizarre for of amusement from someone who may not even have bc. How others take it seriously is beyond comprehension. Reality is a fluid state for some, I suppose.
-
exbrnxgrl... the dangers of the internet. Anyone can spout anything and not be held responsible for the havoc they create.
-
Bronx, at some point in that discussion, I said that I respect belief, but that I prefer reality-based foundations for deciding about my health. I got chastised for that, because if I do not "believe" then why do I discuss alternative treatments. That basically tells me that many of these people consider belief and magical thinking acceptable and reasonable grounds for making treatment decisions. I am still working on processing that one.
-
I get my Mac products at Macy's, Nordstom, or Bloomingdales.
-
Kay, I really don't know how it works, intellectually. It is hard for me to relate.
-
Hmmm.... we don't have any of those stores in Canada. I'll check online to see which of our department stores carries it.
Momine... that struck me as well. You and I have had that magickal thinking discussion before. While, as a witch, I use magickal thinking to strengthen my concentration, focus and mental discipline, but I would never rely on it for something like breast cancer.
-
kay, I actually watched some quack video that argued that, among other stuff.
-
kayb... sadly, I've seen that mindset in some alternative practitioners. Another tactic I see among the "believers" is when the patient is - finally - so far advanced that chemotherapy is used as a last, desperate resort to slow things down - and, of course, doesn't work because: 1) it's way too late; and 2) the patient's health is so compromised by tumor burden to hold up to chemo - then it's the "... see? Chemotherapy will kill you..." retort.
Still trying to wrap my head around that logic.
And that's, also, why I get so steamed at the whole "pink ribbon tyranny": that, if-you-are-positive-enough-you will survive" horsesh... feathers.
-
so if I "believe" I'm going to become a bazillionaire I will? Awesome!
-
no glittery eye stuff for "older woman" - yes, I read Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and even sometimes W. The joys of being a Saturday Person, which is what a dear friend calls being retired ( every day is Saturday, with nada ya have to do!) JOY,
So Stilla - really like the cream cheek color - in the winter need something a bit heavier and then it's Bobbi Brown Pot(rouge/lip) cream, delicious, and sometimes Laura Mercier Cream cheek color, but think I'm back to really preferring the Bobbi Brown. Also her BB Extra Tinted Moisturizer Balm - which I use in Medium tint, or Medium/dark.
My natural skin color is what I call "Have you been sick?" but they don't have that shade at the Cosmetic Counters...I get the stuff at Needless Markup, Nordstroms in Natick MA on my way back from my yearly Dana Farber journey.
-
Mardibra... that or a Justin Bieber fan. #badumDUM.

-
Sunflowers... I've discovered the joys of a cream blusher. It has a lovely texture, like mousse. My skin loves it. I use a peach in the warm months and an almost-terracotta shade for the winter months. And I use an ivory mineral face powder only in the warm months to absorb shine. I avoid it in winter 'cause my skin is dryer and doesn't need it (not mention highlighting the dryness is NOT what I want to do...)
-
kayb, LOL - they are PALE aren't they....
-
I would love it if believing or anecdotes would just make it so, but that is too much magical thinking for me. Also, despite how very liberal I am, anything and everything does not go. Self diagnosis is one of those areas where I draw the line. I think I have bc, therefore I do? No, not okay. There has to be some evidence based research behind my medical treatments or at least compelling evidence of no harm for supplements and complimentary tx.
-
And add to the "I think I have bc, therefore I do" mentality, a claim of "then I cured my self-diagnosed bc with herbs and ointments." Seriously NOT OK.
-
Yorkie, which begs the question, especially with imaginary BC, why not just 'magine it away?
